Launching into Orbit

http://blog.bioware....ing-into-orbit/

Vancouver.jpg

We’re excited to announce today the release of a BioWare project that’s unlike anything we’ve done before. Over the past few months, the BioWare Online Services team has been working hard on the next-generation of our online technology platform: Orbit.

Orbit is a modern Java framework that makes it easier to build and maintain distributed, secure, and scalable online services. It is inspired by a variety of existing frameworks and brings some exciting new things to the table.

Beginning today, we will be making Orbit open source on GitHub under a BSD license. We have been leveraging open source technology internally for quite some time, and we think the time is now right for us to give back and engage with the community in a more meaningful way.

The last-generation of Orbit powered some of the key technology behind the Dragon Age Keep and Dragon Age: Inquisition. Our plans for the next-generation framework are even more ambitious.

Orbit is still early in development, and as such, we’re excited about the opportunity that open and collaborative development presents. We’re looking forward to working with people across the community to make it even better. If you’re building online services in Java, we’d love to hear your feedback.

This initiative is the result of a lot of effort from people across BioWare and EA, and as our first open source project, we think Orbit will be an exciting and interesting challenge.

We’re continually inspired by the passion of the open source community and we can’t wait to get involved.

Check out Orbit at http://orbit.bioware.com or https://github.com/e...ronicarts/orbit

But getting angry about having the exclusivity end date revealed as being May, only a week after the DLC launched, when getting such a 'head's up' is so unusual, is just a sorry reason for some more whining entitlement. We'll get calls for free stuff in compensation next !

I don't think people are getting angry at the end date being revealed, but that the end date is in May.  It's a pretty egregious slap in the face for other consoles to have timed exclusives at all, but to have one for so long?

ok, I was just responding to a particular post that I felt was shooting the messenger, when information, even information people don't like, is preferable to silence. The points you made in the other thread about the principle of timed exclusives/tiered service being bad/not ok, regardless of the length of time were spot on, by the way.

Again, we probably shouldn't do this here...

I would love if someone would translate the above for me into layman's terms? Because I am unsmart.

Also, I wonder if the ps people would be so mad if it was a Sony exclusive. Would you be mad on the behalf of the rest of us? I am sad to say I will never get to play the last of us. Not ever.

I don't know why people come up with...'Oh I never get to play Bloodborne or The Last of Us'. Jesus...Don't compare it. Those games are released only on PS. DA: I is released on PS3/PS4 and Xbox 360/X1. All DLCs should be available on platforms at the same time.

DA Keep was built using a software framework that BioWare created. They named the framework "Orbit". That framework was built using the Java programming language.

Since BioWare have been using open source software (i.e. software where the source code is made public and anyone can participate in the development of the software), they now have decided to contribute to the open source software world by releasing the Orbit framework they had been working on. They are welcoming people to contribute to its development.

It's just a framework that developers can use for building web services like the Keep. It's nothing that anyone who isn't a software developer would care about.

As a software developer myself, I'm skeptical when anyone uses "Modern" and "Java" in the same sentence, but the Keep works well enough, so there's that.

Wait, wait wait.....are you seriously suggesting that if I pay Bioware 60 dollars, they don't owe me a working game?

Can I have whatever drugs you're currently using at the moment?

Drugs are not necessary, basic reading comprehension and a little time on your hands to read the EULA are. Many people like you have no idea because you simply click the "I agree" in a hurry to get to the game, completely unaware that your license agreement essentially strips you of every right you may think you have. This is common practice in the software industry. Where exactly have you been?

Yes, it COULD have been longer. Thank you Bioware for not screwing over PS fans MORESO than you already have. We should be grateful that you only allotted us month's or so wait time.

Seriously, what kind of logic is that?

BioWare as a studio probably had nothing to do with this decision. At least, the ordinary devs who worked on the game certainly didn't.

If you want to take that anger out on something, save it for Microsoft and EA. There's absolutely no benefit to raging at the developers because they have no control at all over this situation.

Mark Farrah didn't sound terribly pleased about the whole thing, so maybe even he didn't have the power to affect this deal being done.

Edit: Darrah". Damn it, autocorrect

And he himself is a PS4 gamer, I think. Not sure about that.

Oh of course those don't count. Not at all the same thing as these kind of exclusive rights deals. Except it's the exact same thing, but you don't count that because you're on the end that benefits. Maybe the details are different, but the basics are the same. Exclusive rights of an item (forever or for a limited time) to one company. Same thing.

And thanks to those for dumbing that down for me with the Orbit. Xox

I don't even own The Last of Us nor Bloodborne. No idea where's the benefit. You might think everyone who owns PS4 buys those games. You're wrong my dear. End of story. Baaai.

Since I'm old, I had to look up Baaai on urban dictionary. Had I known use of "Bai" automatically made you win the argument, I would have personally used it much sooner, even though it would make me also (according to UD) a teenage net ****** and a chode. I also had to look that up to make sure it meant the same thing as it did in 1995. (it does).

Anyway, congrats. You win!

A developer creating a game for one platform and leaving it at that isn't the same as a developer developer creating a game and DLC for several platforms but then having the publisher say you're only allowed to release the DLC on that and that platform for now. The rest will have to wait.

Witcher DLC is already been announced as free unless they "make an entire new game within the game we aent charging anything. Unless its like 50 hours of extra content or something"

I forgot to ask this earlier, but does it matter when you decided to complete this DLC?

Is there a preferred time to do it perhaps?

Endgame, midgame ect

I've only had one playthrough on the DLC and it was post-endgame. There were conversations that touched on the end of the main storyline. My next playthrough will be pre-endgame and I'll see what some of the others have to say about it (eg. Solas...).

It doesn't make too much of a difference, unless you want Solas to tag along.

It's a level 20+ area, so you can't really do much there until later in the game.

If Microsoft had paid the developmant of the entire game (as it happened with Tlou, Uncharted, Beyond:two souls, Ni No Kuni, InFamous on PS, Halo on Xbox, Bayonetta 2 on Wii) than the exclusive is acceptable. I can see why some people may not like it, but they knew before they buyed their game platforms that they would have to skip some games. Since DAI is made for all platforms, the deal with Microsoft is just a childish way to trip the others platforms.

Just a legalized unfair competition. With very poor results, beside making who play on platforms different from PC and Xbox1 hate them, and being even more attached to their preferred console, since the stuff feel just as an injustice, not a good thing.

I'm quite against this kind of timed exclusives. I can't see any gain in these kind of timed exclusives.

How do you know that Microsoft didn't pay for a portion of DAI's development as part of this deal?
