What is that context that makes it good game design to have us collect dozens of bottles, shards, mosaic tiles, letters from dead people?

You can't use the the trivial side content as a sweeping generalization of the game's gameplay. It's unfair.

Those quests are entirely tangential to the quests and serve as an impetus to explore the area. Dragon Age Inquisition heavily focuses on the exploration aspect, so the open world is part of the game and not "filler".

Furthermore I find this particular thing you said to be odd

I don't recall this context being in DAO and DA2.

You can't be serious SwobyJ. The collection items you quoted are a mirror image of the collection quests in DAO received from the Chantry Board, Irregulars Chest, and Collective Bag. Most of those quests required you to retrieve certain items on the side as you complete the main quests. Just like you need to explore all the areas to get the DAI collectibles, you had to do those side quests throughout the campaign. They had little to no context and were mostly pursued gold and experience. DAO and DA2 did not have significant exploration aspects. The content is there but the context of exploration isn't. Now that's filler.

The difference here is that the collection quests in DAI serve as an impetus for exploration and have rewards other than gold and experience.

Let's break down what you used as examples.

You have the shard keystones which have tangible benefits to your character. This is an RPG. You plunder a temple for hidden powers. Is this not a staple of any decent fantasy RPG? Some other RPGs have power-ups that are very randomly placed throughout the world with little context. Just because they are clustered in Solasan doesn't make them any less relevant to the RPG.

Then you have the astrariums which serve as mini-game diversions, significant lore hubs regarding Thedosian astronomy, and a reward when all are completed. They're fun little glorified codex entries. Do we count picking up Codex entries as filler now? :)

The same applies to the mosaics really, which have a tangible cosmetic effect on your Keep as well.

Then you have the bottles. Those are obviously filler, but they serve as comedy relief if you read the descriptions. Not only that but they are completely tangential to the game with little to no reward. They're just there for the exploration and completionist-inclined.

You mention the letter quest. There are literally only two fetch quests in the Exalted Plains which include that quest and the supply retrievals. Incidentally one belongs to the Gaspard faction and the other to the Celene. Perhaps there's a RP opportunity in following those questline? If you consider that reaching, then I have to ask. What makes the impulse to help Athras find his "dead" wife any different than helping a soldier finding the dead? Those quests end up with different outcomes (former is tragedy...RIP Danyla, latter is a mix of comedy and tragedy), but the purpose is the same.

And why are you saying 'people' when replaying to me?

It's a general statement really, using your post as a point of reference. I didn't mean to single you out :P

If you want to continue discussing this we can do it via PMs as to not derail the thread :)

And Amazon has a new release date too (it's been there for some days). It was supposed to come out on April 29, wasn't? It's said May 12 at Amazon (but I'm keeping my order, of course). I only speak portuguese, but I already have some books on english (I can read english... in some way). It's Bioware fault, haha.

Just curious, will Da:Origins and DA:2 ever be available for the newer consoles?

Mark Darrah @BioMarkDarrah

no current plans. I guess you never can say never but it would be a big job.

People are currently trying to convince Aaron Flynn to remaster the whole ME series to the new consoles, I'm guessing if they do and it goes well, DA will be looked at next

I doubt it will happen in either case. From both a financial and creative standpoint, it would be more rewarding to put that effort into developing new games.

I can see remasters/ports of DAO+DA2, but its hard to think of it happening this decade..

Remastering the ME series will most likely be an easier job. ME already has gameplay that can't be considered dated, and the graphics were already realistic, so they just need to do minor adjustments and slap on a new coat of paint. For DA due to the nature of the game and graphics of the first two games, it would need to be rebuilt from the ground up.

I doubt it. People have been begging Bioware for remasters since KoTOR.

Not exactly, if they were to do graphical updates it doesn't matter which franchise it will be quite a hassle and frankly not worth the effort. It isn't as easy as slapping on a new coat of paint, to "port" a game to a new engine - such as from UE3 to FB3 - you will essentially need to rebuild the game from the ground up. And that's just on the programming side, if you want newer looking characters and proper implementation of new shaders they will have to redo the characters and optimize them for current generation. Higher resolution textures, properly masked physically based rendering as can be seen in DAI, and more. It just isn't worth the time or money that it would require.
