2 DLC's for a game (fan grumbles aside) that has been very successful, doesn't feel quite right.

Bioware is currently working on three different projects at the same time though, which might limit the number of people they can spare for DLC. This is the first time that they've ever had two games in production simultaneously while working on DLC for a third, and maybe doing pre-production for the next DA title too.

Unfortunately, I also suspect that the studio and EA were hoping that Inquisition would be significantly more successful in terms of sales. I don't think it did badly, but I also don't think its commercial reception was as strong as its critical one. Dragonslayer aside, there's also been nowhere near as much support for DA:I's multiplayer mode in terms of more characters and maps, which is the complete opposite of what happened with Mass Effect.

July - something Dwarven.

October - something Elfy.

January - something Qunari?

What...!? There was a trend XD

I think it may be the first one. If it was the second I don't think EA/BioWare would bother with as many patches as they tossed out. Probably at most 1 or 3 patches.

I doubt they’re spread thin to be honest. They may be working on 3 projects at once but they’re all at very different stages. The new IP still sounds like it’s in the world building stage so you won’t have many dev’s working on it at the moment, mainly concept artists and writers. ME: A is in full production mode right now so the majority of the artists/coders will be working on it but there will be certain dev’s who only work on dragon age games and it is these developers that will make up the bulk of the DLC dev team. Even though this team may not be big in comparison to the others they’ll be working on multiple projects too, it’s very rare that they’ll be working on a single dlc at one time. once on DLC is coming to the end of dev and is getting ready for certification they will most likely have been working on the next one for a month or so.

As for sales, supposedly it’s Bioware’s best selling game to date so to me that means they’ve sold more than enough to warrant the same amount of singleplayer DLC as ME3. With multiplayer it’s a bit less clear, also it’s kind of unfair to compare me3’s multiplayer with DAI’s. They’re very different, with ME3 they could get DLC out quickly because they were mainly supplying new characters that didn’t really play that differently to the rest of the characters within their class. An adept was all about making stuff explode, didn’t matter whether it was one of the base game characters or one that was released via DLC the play style was mostly the same. In DAI every character is different in terms of play style, you have pure damage dealers like the reaver to tanky characters like the legionnaire both require different strategies to work well in team play. Plus it’s clear from DragonSlayer that the dev’s are approaching multiplayer DLC differently this time. They want to expand on the core gameplay and add different game modes to a degree rather than just adding new factions/characters/maps and that takes a lot more time.

"Bioware's best selling game to date" might still be fewer sales than EA hoped for, or even expected, though. They haven't ever talked about actual numbers, which they did do for Origins once it passed three million. Again, I don't think Inquisition was a disaster but I do feel like EA had higher hopes in the sense that it would become a breakout, "mainstream" hit. That didn't really happen.

There are other things to consider with regards to DLC, too - it might be more expensive to create DLC for Inquisition with four voices for the main character, the economics of DLC might've changed from when developing for Mass Effect, etc. I don't think it's as a simple as assuming the market size is the same so they'll get the same number of DLC packs.

If this rumoured thing is the last Inquisition DLC, it would be disappointing but not really surprising - neither BW nor EA appear to have fallen over themselves rushing to provide new content for the game, for whatever reason. When they did, Jaws of Hakkon got such a half-hearted marketing campaign that I thought something weird was going on at the studio.

They might have mentioned sales numbers for Origins, but that was a long time ago.  Having read a few of EA's recent earnings' calls, they don't seem to talk about sales numbers for any or their games, so I'm not sure how much you can read into that.

They also directly stated that DAI surpassed their expectations in the same earnings call in which they made the best Bioware launch comment.  They go so far as to credit it as the primary reason the company as a whole surpassed earnings estimates.

Well, everyone hopes for a break-out hit, but it sounds like EA had proper expectations given they've said DA: I exceeded them.

Sorry to have to do this, but as I am immensely curious - would you care to share your source? Final annual accounts publication time is looming near - is this from where EA published theirs?

A quote from that transcript if anyone's interested (EA's CFO Blake Jorgensen)

"However, our focus on live services, strong title performance, and expense control drove operating margins up significantly this quarter to 36% from 33.8% last year.  And this resulted in excellent cash generation and earnings.  This extraordinary performance was led by FIFA 15, Madden NFL 15, and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

In particular, Dragon Age: Inquisition had by far the most successful launch in Bioware history, exceeding our expectations."

I may be wrong, but I've seen people who got the survey say that it looked like EA was asking about how they should advertise this DLC (people were, for example, asked to pick phrases/descriptions that would make them buy it). So the possibility is that either this thing's almost ready and the survey's more about the DLC's marketing campaign - or, as many suspect, it's something we may see in far-away future.

Dragon Age Inquisition DLC with story based content. That's all they need to say and I'm buying it.

Obviously BW's worst game ever. Revenue shouldn't even matter; donuts, raw passion and the love of the BSN should suffice as sustenance for devs that really care. trying and failing at sarcasm

As much as I'd like a RPG to dethrone those sports games that nobody and everybody plays at the same time, it's good - albeit good in a weird way - to have DA mentioned among them.
