Seriously though, some people will probably be like that no matter what reasons or explainations are presented for the changes to some of their beloved characters. Fan-headcanon is a writer's worst enemy.

Can't help but think that BioWare coming to my house and deleting my fan fiction might be the highlight of my year ...

(I picture a group of guys rifling through folders on my PC, muttering, and searching words like "Alistair" and "rivalmance" while my husband makes them a nice cup of tea and wonders who they are and what they are doing.)

I'm going to extrapolate wildly and assume that this means they'll be showing characters we already know, and have formed opinions about.  HMM.

As long as they're not showing off the sparkly new set protagonist who looks suspiciously like a computer generated amalgam of Gordon Freeman/Isaac Clarke/Default Male Shepard/Nathan Drake/etc., I think I'll refrain from rending garments.
