I wanted the next one about 3 seconds after they announced The Descent and will continue to until they actually finish the main story in a reasonable way what isn't 'to be continued'.

Don't get me wrong I like JoH and The Descent its just they are side stores, fun and interesting side stories with new lore and revelations, but side stores nonetheless.

$10 says they end the last DLC with a cliffhanger.

They damn well better.  I liked the ending of Inquisition.  It wrapped up the central themes and purpose of the narrative while opening up more questions.  The last DLC better do the same thing.  Wrapping up those questions while firmly passing the torch to DA 4.  (Preferably without losing the Inquisition in the process)

As long as its a cliffhanger what makes sense for another protagonist to resolve sure, currently a lot of the threads are to intwined with the Inquisitor and the Inquisition.

Its not that odd when you think about it, BioWare Austin worked on The Descent while BioWare Edmonton is/was (could be nearly finished) obviously working on something SP related ('sad' cut scenes, bard music ect..)

I wouldn't be surprised if The Descent was greenlit after Shadow Realms was cancelled back in February (about 6 month dev time seems about right, first tease about Deep Roads DLC was late March)

It's odd purely because developers normally like to have a cooling off period between DLC. With Bioware it’s typically been around 2-3 months between DLC packs, though admittedly The Descent has kind of buggered up that pattern a bit. I suppose it could be that the descent was delayed for reasons unknown while the DLC the Edmonton team are working on is still on track and they don’t see any point in putting a release back. Regardless it'll be nice if we don't have to wait too long for the next one.

My pocket book might give me odd looks.

How did the ending wrap up anything? Before the end the plot is simple take down the big bad and then deal with a new Divine then suddenly it drops 4 more things and then pulls a 'to be continued' to a series what has new protagonists every game.

(Ending spoilers)

Spoiler

3 of them are heavily tied to our character and the Inquisition, one is rather tied to it and the other is a hook for a future game or book.

Well I think it wrapped the main threat up, anyway. But always have to leave some stuff open-ended or we wouldn't be interested in the DLC, I guess. :)

Its been about 5 months since Edmonton released Jaws of Hakkon on Xbox One thats about the right 'cool off' time but as you said The Decent (and the reason it probably exists in the first place) kinda screws up the pattern, more content is always good though!  :D

Or future games.  Especially in the DA verse, and especially  with DA I characters don't tend to carry over.  Its not a long term series in that regard.  There is no character continuity, or at least very little, or the very least none for protags, so plots and themes must carry over.  Each chapter is the ending of a story.  DA I might end the 'Southern Thedas Trilogy'  at least for the moment.

Yep. I don't have a problem with loose ends in a continuing series - I think they're necessary really. I do want to see being made a goddess and skipping away merrily with Solas closure for the Inquisitor though. Lack of any real closure for many HoF is why so many players keep wanting to see him/her return. I'm not quite so bothered (headcanon is a powerful thing) but I think a story loose-end is a different thing to a character loose-end, especially when that character is 'yours'.

Yes it wraps up that plot point only to then start up 4-5 more of them only then to end on all but a 'to be continued' message thats not what I would call wrapping up central themes what I would say are:

The Inquisition,

The Inquisitor,

and Faith and the politics surrounding it.

Rather than some 'big bad' we slap about for the majority of the game like he is nothing.  :P

That is the purpose of series fiction and cliff hangers in general, wrapping some things up while introducing more questions which can drive the narrative forward in the future.  And simultaneously make the audience/ consumers look forward to spending their hard earned money on future installments.  ME 3 did this wrong, DA I did this right.  Not that I do not want to spend more money on future ME games, but it has nothing to do with dat ending.

I know how cliff hangers work but we are talking about a series what has different protagonists every game, a lot of the current cliff hangers don't make narrative sense to be addressed by 'new protagonist no.4' as a player we would still get the pay off sure but for the story the Inquisitor needs to be the lead character.

If not those plot threads might suffer the same fate as Hawke's cameo what came off as a forced way to make up for the cancelled DLC or being bushed off for Codex filler like the Hero of Fereldan or just completely ignored like the Orlesian Warden commander.

Yeah I can see that.

One of my favorite tv shows has had a very intricate long-running mystery for five years now, and last night it was literally summed up by the suckiest stupid ending ever. Don't go so long to answer any questions that you're forced to half-ass it because you ran out of time.

The main problem I have with all these cliff hangers is they are not getting wrapped up and these are diverting attention from the current protagonist. Honestly until the ending of DA2 I cared little for what happened to my warden after their story was over, they were gone done and if they didn't appear again that was okay. But then lo and behold they are dragged back into the game via codex and suddenly I wanted to know everything, it just made me want to replay or at least see my warden again which before crest wood I didn't really feel the need for.

They really need to get better about shutting the book on characters. While they've left the door open for Hawke to reappear, I'm hoping a move to northern Thedas means they'll be leaving most of the familiar characters behind in favor of establishing new ones.

Now that Descent is released, we focus on the next DLC.

Bioware Edmonton had time to really focus on this as Bioware Austin mostly took care of Descent.

It would be cool to hear about the details of a new potential DLC at the end of this month but here is hoping :)

If they release the next DLC in November, it would be exactly 2 months between DLC releases. If it's a big, biiiig DLC, starting to promote it 2 months prior seems reasonable too. Releasing the next part of the story as a story DLC exactly a year after release is really fitting too.

Now I'm just talking myself into hopes that are going to be crushed, right...?

Indeed, that’s what I’m hoping they’re going to do. They did it with ME3 and the Citadel DLC, it was released near enough a year after the game came out, there's no reason to believe they wouldn’t do the same for DAI.

Every time I play as Qunari inquisitor, I realize we need more options to snap the necks of characters who annoy me.

If both studios worked on a DLC each, I wonder how they handled recording lines from the Voice Actors. I guess they'd go to Edmonton, record the lines for both, then Edmonton would send the needed lines for Descent over to Austin?
