I mean, we'd be able to stop him. We have the mark, just, wave our fingers about and boom. But it'll be quite depressing if they've wrapped him up in Plot armour.

My honest guess is they will do something in the vein of what DA2 did. "Sure was awesome hanging out together for the past few years." But very little beyond that.

If it's like Awakening, it'll be a new option on the start menu, though it'd probably require an end-game save (unlike Awakening).

The one dream I've hold out for is going to our quarters to trigger it. We'll get a cutscene with our romanced companion in our Quarters, then something something off we go to be put on trial!
