This is the first Dragon Age game where I really wish I could play as the same Protagonist next time. But (and I'm going to spoiler tag, so those reading, be fairly warned that this is spoilery. Though I will word it as vaguely as I can, I wouldn't read it if you haven't played the new DLC, yet):

...But, they have a pretty convincing reason for needing new people. The presumed next antagonist is familiar enough with the Inquisition and the people in it that they're at a serious tactical disadvantage. Therefore, they'd have a better chance with different, autonomous agents with no prior Inquisition connection. I actually think it's really great that they specifically give you this preemptive explanation, from the mouth of your own PC. I can prepare myself, haha.

 

So, though I'm a little sad about it, I'm curious about how the next protagonist will fit in.

There are ways they could have the inquisitor come back into the picture but I agree the bulk of the work in the next game will be done by a new protagonist. What would be ideal is if we could have both a new protag and the inquisitor since it doesn’t make a great deal of sense to just cut them out completely even for the reasons stated in the DLC. They’re rather invested in the whole Solas storyline after all. I seem to remember Mike Laidlaw tweeting a long time ago that one of the things he loved about GTA V was the multiple protagonists and being able to switch between them. If they could go down that route for DA4 then we could play as a new character for most if not all missions with new companions and such but also have the option of playing as our inquisitor in certain key missions dealing with a certain elf. That would be the ideal outcome to me as someone who wouldn’t mind a few more adventures with the inquisitor but whether reality will allow that is another thing.

I wonder if it could be done with, say, a clause, or an option of some kind.

Contracted for x amount of hours/games, with a clause or option that states Bioware has the option to extend contract or whatever, based on growth of role? Maybe it's just a lucrative enough gig that no one turns them down. lol.

You can do SO MANY things with contracts. Pretty much anything that isn't expressly prohibited. There could be a number of ways in which you could tie a person down so to speak but given what others have said (industry's capricious nature etc) it doesn't seem like a practical move.

On a related note, as I was perusing through Patrick Weekes' Twitter feed attempting to find something post-able, I see he has fallen down the path of Mike Laidlaw and is answering a lot of things with "Spoilers!" now, which I find vastly amusing.

Would be nice to have a little closure on this.

 

I mean I don't expect the quest to be successful but it would be nice to know the HoF isn't out there for his/her last years while the LI is waiting at home.

I guess EA's process does require a full pitch for every project, so Bioware has to invest a bit of work in DA4 before it can be greenlit. It is most likely story synopsis, out-of-engine pre-rendered scenes and demo combat. It is unlikely to contain much, if any at all, playable components as it is likely to be a proof-of-concept mock, rather than a pre-alpa version of a final product.

 

Hopefully within the next year we will hear more about it (with only a few people on DA it will take a while to get it going.)
