well we can keep watching the Twitter thread until the last patch and the multiplayer stuff stops. But at some point the well will run dry until DA4 gets a green light.

Oh, I know. But it seems like just yesterday we were watching live demos at one game con or another. Now we're a few years out from seeing anything like that again, and this time we were left with some Really! Big! Questions! and it just doesn't feel over for that.

...Especially if your canon playthrough romanced Solas. <_<

My second Inquisitor, Aeryn Lavellan, is currently wooing Solas as I prepare to play Trespasser for the first time once I eventually reach the endgame. I am... so masochistic about my BioWare. I can guess what'll happen, to be sure, and I already know the gist of how the vanilla content plays out, too. But here I am, committing to it.

Ah, so MP might well carry on for a bit, then.

I believe laidlaw said they plan to support multiplayer until at least December. Also, I hope someone told Greg that he needs a newer console to play trespasser. :P

You get a like for naming your Quizzy Aeryn :) Although damn, poor girl - you really are masochistic :D

Anyways, yeah, I cannot believe it is over either. Although I did play different games in the meantime as well, this thing has been sucking out every ounce, pinch and iota of free time I have had in the past six months (did not get it at launch due to health reasons). And now the years-long wait for DA:Next begins. At least there will be ME:A  next year (if it launches on schedule) to provide that BioWare fix and make the wait feel shorter.

I always end up with a big goofy grin on my face when folks recognize the reference!

Until relatively recently, as soon as a video game launched, it was essentially "over." With the Trespasser epilogue DLC, Dragon Age: Inquisition sort of managed to remain in the present for ten months. To me, there is no feeling of sorrow here. So long as a fourth game eventually transpires, I am pleased.

Post release content has always been the norm in Bioware games, it just used to be expansions

This is true. I've been a console gamer all my life and I came into BioWare just five-ish years ago, so I often forget that the PC side was miles ahead in this regard.

Given that people still complain about changes from the old Inquisition PAX demo, even as limited as they were, I doubt anything like that will ever see the light of day.

Too true. I could see BioWare adopting the Bethesda model (say nothing until the game is mostly done), particularly with the new IP and frankly that would be a good thing. I would be quite relaxed about hearing nothing about DA4 until E3 2020 for a Fall 2020 release.

Yeah, but six years between installments?

As I recall, while feedback was made frequently about many subjects, this used to be the usual stance given concerning NWN1. "It will be done when it's done".

I could see it.

With a new IP, I could imagine 2 years between each release.

I don't think the new IP will be out before 2018.

And the resources move around the BioWare team, so a 2020 date for DA4 is conservative but realistic.

Yeah, I get it. "Conservative but realistic" is how I'd regard that estimate as well. I could also see the studio restructuring toward an attempted quasi-annual effort, with 2016 for Andromeda, 2017-18 for the new IP, 2018-19 for DA4. I would cite that as a realistic outlook as well, if liberal. :P

Yes but... Dragon Age franchise isn't like TES or Fallout. They don't tell almost entirely self-contained story. I don't think there's any benefit in making people wait too long, especially considering how many are invested in ongoing story, be it after DAI or since DAO.

It would be a too long wait for anyone to stay interested in what's going to happen, really - especially now, when we have found out that the story and plot points established in DA3 will likely be more directly and intimately tied with events of DA4 than those of previous installments.

It was a bit less than 4 years between DA2 and DAI? And that was with a new engine to work out, and an expansion that never happened. And at one point they were shooting for a lot earlier.

I don't think long waits make sense if they're looking to do a connected story. Even dedicated fans will be like "What's a Templar?" in 5 years.

It's the new IP that confuses me, in a way I'd expect both that and DA4 to be ready about the same time, but releasing two games at once makes no sense, so I could see one being held back even if it could be ready earlier.

I doubt they'd do that. I foresee:

2016 Andromeda

2017 (Either new IP or DA4)

2018 (Either new IP or DA4)

Also they don't have to limit themselves to 1 release a year. A game in October/November then another in March/April gives plenty of room in between for wallets to recuperate.

Certainly so, although shareholders tend to prefer to see the developer posting profits each fiscal year, I imagine, so... well, tis complicated.

BioWare is only sustainable so long as they put out games. The "realignment" that happened after DA2/ME3 should be over now, and releases should be paced regularly again.

Which means DA4 in 2018.
