It really depends. Naughty Dog will have gone three years between releases. Another two for Bethesda. CDProjekt went four. Rockstar is going 3-4, technically. How long since EA's Visceral put something out? Sometimes developers intentionally space themselves out, and sometimes their publishers don't even mind. It really depends.

If it can be achieved without a loss in quality, I would love for BioWare to aim for annualization for the remainder of this generation, but I am not so certain we can safely proclaim that this is their goal. A million things in this discussion we are not privy to, nine hundred thousand of which we will never know.

How long since EA's Visceral put something out?

About 10 months.

And you have to remember that BioWare isn't just BioWare anymore; it's also Montreal, which gives "BioWare" three years between each iteration of a particular IP.

Austin appears to be assisting with a few things as well.

Haha, yeah, the Visceral question actually was a question, so, glad you answered.

What'd they come out with?

Battlefield: Hardline (which unfortunately performed incredibly well despite being really gross). (I actually can't remember if it came out late last year or early this year.)

And they're currently working on a Star Wars title.

Ah, that was them, innit. Forgot it was them.

Yes, I'm super-stoked for the Star Wars title. Amy Hennig helming it has me giddy.

I doubt they'd do that. I foresee:

2016 Andromeda

2017 (Either new IP or DA4)

2018 (Either new IP or DA4)

Yep.

Though I'd allow either 2017 or 2018 (not both) to have no releases (not counting SWTOR stuff).

I doubt it but I could see it happen.

But still that's still make 2018-2019 latest or DA4.

AKA 3-4 years from now tops.

More likely 2-3 though.

I think maybe the IP would come out first, but then I realize that they are starting from scratch really- how long was Origin in development, just for world-building and stuff? Dragon Age 4 already has a massive built-in lore and library to pull from, characters and a story already predetermined to an extent, artists and concept designers that already have massive amounts of story art (for instance, Tevinter art etc.) in backstock to pull from.

It's got to be way easier than starting a new IP from scratch, especially the way BW does it, so story heavy. The only thing that makes me pause is basically all the writers on the Dragon Age Team are gone. Actually, literally they are all gone except for Patrick. So do they finish the IP, then go back to DA? I can't imagine they would hire all new writers for the next Dragon Age, not when some of these writers have done work for all of the DA games so far. They know a lot of lore other writers may not.

It's so confusing.

I don't want to create a topic so I guess this topic is as good for this question as any other... anything about when we will be receiving the next/last patch? I really wanted to play Trespasser with the proper ruler thing, it is a big deal for me =(

They might move people over from Mass Effect: Andromeda (to be honest, I have no idea who's writing that). Courtney Woods and Hall Hood from BioWare Austin did most of the writing on The Descent already, so they seem like good possibilities if BioWare are looking for people to join the DA writing team in the future.

While I'm sad to see people like David Gaider and Mary Kirby et. al. move on, it may be that the people who have been on the series for an entire decade just feel the need to do something else.

My impression is that the way things work at Bioware is that team leads stay on a franchise full-time, while most other devs move to whatever projects are currently in full swing. So, while Dragon Age isn't in full development, Patrick is probably there pre-writing, and once development on DA4 is back in full swing writers from other teams will float back to Dragon Age (so, after whichever game releases next is finished).

I wonder if these two persons will become companions or major characters in the next DA.

It's ongoing, so my guess is mentions and maybe a cameo at best. Can't have too many alternate states/conditions of their characters or the comic won't work. I don't think they'll mix in TOO heavily.

Well, they did call it "an essential addition to the Dragon Age canon!"

And I don't think it's just part of advertisement. However the story of the comic goes, it will likely be canon for every world-state we can come up with.

Well, Cole was a character in Dragon Age: Asunder, and became a full companion for DAI.  So it's at least theoretically possible someone from the comic could be a major character in the next game.  Depending on where the storyline goes.

Wasn't Maevaris from the comic book? She was mentioned in-game too and seems likely enough to be in the next one.

Maevaris is very popular. She will definitely be a companion. It's semi-confirmed.

Bethesda is also a publisher, don't forget, and they are pretty much annual at this point: Skyrim (2011), Dishonored (2012), ?(2013), Evil Within (2014), Wolfenstein (2014), Fallout 4 (2015), Dishonored 2 (2016), Doom (2016).

True.

Also, fun fact: when I said that some are hypothesizing a turn back to the annual release schedule for BioWare, I thiiiink I remembered you saying something to that effect over on NeoGAF.
