@user: @PatrickWeekes Curious: Can elf-blooded humans ever have phenotypically elven children if each subsequent generation has kids with elves?

Patrick Weekes@PatrickWeekes: @user Nope. "Elf-blooded" is a legal distinction. No genetics in play.

@user: @PatrickWeekes Interesting! So kids of elves & humans are 100% human not just legally but also dont inherit any genetics from the elf parent?

Patrick Weekes@PatrickWeekes: @user YEP. Otherwise two elf-blooded humans could have an elven kid. Which doesn't happen here. So.

Ugh, that's an aspect of the Asari that always bugged me (the whole "We can have offspring but only one of us passes our genetics on.") I know it's fiction but it makes my brain twitch.

You can also sort of make a human Inquisitor look a little Elven in character creator (not ears) but how the face is flatter (needs no mods) I did it by mistake with my new Inquisitor.

I suppose they would have to go this route for characters we have met previously, like Alistair its a shame they went this route really. But I couldn't imagine Alistair being allowed to take the throne if he looked a little elven.

So if I'm not mistaken, it's impossible for a female human and a male elf to have a male child? They'll always have daughters?

Hard to say. The only examples we've seen of elf-blooded humans so far all have elven mothers and human fathers. (As far as we know - I don't think Slim Coudry specifies which way round his parents were.)

While Alistair is a dead ringer for his brother and probably his dad, Feynriel seems to take after his mother as far as colouring goes. Really, apart from 'it's magic!' it's hard to see how elves and humans would get babies without any genetic contribution from the elven parent. Sex cells, be they sperm or egg, do not have a complete set of chromosomes! That's the entire point of sexual reproduction!

Huh, that's actually pretty nice. The base game costed that much, right? Sounds like a good deal for newcomers or those who haven't bought any of the DLC. All the DLC cost 55 dollars or something anyway, more for a deluxe upgrade.

Yeah, if only female human would get pregnant of such relationship, it could be explained away with a kind of parthenogenesis. But even then it's a reach. A just 'Magic!; Elves used to be Trespasser Spoiler!'  is admitting they didn't put much thought into this.

Kieran, with right world state, contradicts this.

Well that makes no sense as he can't have recieved the Y chromasone from Morrigan.

Why exactly are we trying to apply real-world genetics to a fantasy setting?

What're ye talking about? The offspring of elves can be any gender; they're just always human if one parent is human.

This is interesting but weird to me. So if you happen to have one parent who is an elf you share genetically not a single trait with them. You are completely 100 % human. You wouldn't even inherit their eye color or hair color.

I guess there's a reason, or multiple reasons, or whatever.

I remember Gaider once saying something that implied that an elf-blooded child could inherit some physical traits from the elven parent, but it would always be translated into the race features of the non-elven parent.  So you could end up with a kid who has the same hair color, and vaguely resemble the elven parent, but it will be entirely non-elven, and not have elven features.

I'll explain to you very quickly.

XX + XY = XX or XY

If the father is an elf, he can't contribute genetically to the kid so he can't "give" the Y chromosome, meaning the couple would only have girls.

That's assuming Thedas biology works like ours. Remember, we are talking about a world where a person can survive decapitation because of magic rock juice.   ^_^

We've been told repeatedly that we shouldn't be trying to apply genetics to elven reproduction.  It's a magic thing.

Also, there's a codex somewhere in the Exalted Plains written by an elf-blooded man whose father was elven, and his human mother had kept it secret.

Exactly- a world where you may have the traits of a parent without any genetics whatsoever. :)
