@PatrickWeekes Just wondering, did you intend to write Solas as bi, but were unable to due to time/funding constraints?
@User Actually, no. We knew how some people would think of him, and we wanted to avoid this trope:

Yeah, can't remember the source but Cullen and Solas were originally going to be bi options.
EDIT:
Here's some cut dialogue from the m!Cullenmance:
And here's some m!Solas stuff:

In addition, according to Daveliam in this thread (http://forum.bioware...-cullen/page-19),
"1.) At GaymerX, it was said that character was going to be bisexual and they couldn't get the story right and went with him/her being straight.
2.) There are anonymous dev tweets that state the only reason why Cullen wasn't bisexual is because of time constraints." Though the tweet in question was from a former Bioware employee at the time, it fits with there being cut dialogue.

Didn't some voice files get found of Solas suggesting he might have been able to be romanced by men?

I thought it ended after reaching Skyhold? Something I read somewhere said that the romance dialogue was missing in the Fade scene.
If Weekes says he was never written that way, then I guess the male romance dialogue really was a case of recording all the lines anyway. Interesting.

Most of the flirt options were voiced, but none of the actual romance dialogue, if I remember correctly. Going on that, and the way the files look, maybe they were planning on allowing everyone to flirt with him, but only femLavellan to romance. Similar to the way you can flirt with Dorian and Sera despite gender, but the romance is restricted.
That would be my guess, anyway ![]()

@Mike_Laidlaw Hi Mike - another question for you if I may. What year roughly did Shartan and Andraste's rebellions join forces?
@usernairmak_gren I can't remember off the top of my head, but @bengelinas might me able to help.
@Mike_Laidlaw @bengelinas Thanks.
Just wondering how soon after Shartan and Andraste began their fights separately that they teamed up
@user @Mike_Laidlaw I will answer shortly. Gonna cut out Mike because the answer's not short and I need the characters. ![]()
@user According to the Canticle of Shartan, his rebellion began in Vol Dorma (other texts place him in other Tevinter cities). (1/4)
@user After that first battle, Shartan joined Andraste and Maferath's army at the Battle of Valarian Fields in -171 Ancient. (2/4)
@user Depending on whether you believe Shartan began in Vol Dorma, Marnas Pell, or farther places like Solas or Hasmal... (3/4)
@user ... the period of time in between may vary. Regardless, I'd put any time in between within -171 Ancient. (4/4)
@user I'd say weeks at least. Vol Dorma is a fair hike up the Imperial Highway to the Fields.
@bengelinas Awesome, thank you.
I just wish we could learn more about Shartan - he seems an interesting "unperson" in Thedas

Solas does flirt back with the male inquisitor, though. Saying he enjoys looking at his muscles.

It's the same line he says to a female warrior Lavellan.

No he doesn't?
He mentions that the (warrior) Inquisitor travels on a path s/he does not dislike, and enjoys the muscles as a side benefit. The subsequent flirt dialogue can then be chosen by female Lavellans after he says that.

It's mostly this that makes me confused about them saying that they wanted to avoid that 'trope' from the beginning. Almost all the romance lines are already done for male lavellan o.O.

Looking quickly through his twitter, I might have missed something, but I don't think he ever said they wanted to avoid it from the beginning, just that the trope is why they ultimately decided against it. Any time cut content has come up with the writers they've emphasized characters going through numerous iterations and things changing for various reasons; I'm sure they tried it out at some point. When people first started finding cut content in DA:I I remember several devs on twitter, from BioWare and elsewhere, expressing annoyance at the certainty in subsets of fandoms that anything that was considered / tried out at some point in development (and later cut) was how the final product was "meant" to be.
I am kind of surprised he didn't say anything earlier, though. I'm sure plenty of people must have asked. Although I guess

It's been said more than once that voice actors often record all lines regardless of gender. There's an interview where the romance was said to be written specifically with female elves in mind. Weekes just said they never intended for him to be bi. At this point it seems people will believe what they want because they want to feel bad that they "missed out" on something. That's a bit nasty to do to the devs, but I guess they must be used to it by now. But seriously, what other frigging proof do people want to put that question to rest?

Then again, I'm totally in love with Dorian, made a male Inquisitor just to romance him, and haven't looked back since. So I guess I'm kind of an a-hole for thinking that since I'm happy with what I have.
However, in general I think it is more helpful to focus on something like the Gay KISA thread and discuss possible future LIs instead of being upset that something wasn't added or cut from the current game, especially since devs have ALL SORTS of reasons for cutting content, or not adding it, and not just because they want to deprive some segment of players of their desire.
Also, I think it is generally crappy behavior for some anonymous former dev to make such a remark when they know the variables that go into such a decision and also know the sh*tstorm that would follow from such a statement, especially one that is made without any other context. Then those remarks get spread around the internet like they are gospel and only breed more angst.
That's a bit nasty to do to the devs, but I guess they must be used to it by now.
I'm sure they are, and it's a contributing factor to their absence from the forums.
