I have met David Gaider at the Edmonton Expo in 2014. I would guess he's in his 40s, so not close to retiring.
 
Possibly also of note about Beamdog's recent new hires is that Tom Rhodes is Matt Rhodes' brother and also a BioWare alumnus.

I follow Tom Rhodes' YouTube channel, RnD Fantasy. He has a lottery every week on his twitter where he illustrates someone's personal D&D (or something similar) character. It is so much fun to watch him work. He had Matt on as a guest a while back.

I'm a little shocked that what seems like a smallish studio (Beamdog) can afford somebody as senior as David Gaider... I mean, presumably he wouldn't take a pay cut if he was moving jobs, and he'd been at Bioware for 17 years. It's not like game dev salaries are insanely high, but even so... 

Some would take a pay cut if it meant more freedom, the ability to tell the kind of stories they want to tell and make the kind of games they're passionate about making.

He's the Creative Director at Beamdog, not just head writer anymore. So it's a promotion of sorts - he's got Mike Laidlaw's level of responsibility and influence over the games developed by his new studio.
