I do lover the dance of questions where an interviewer clearly wants you to say something, and you know they do but won't say it for them.

David Gaider ‏@davidgaider

Yes, I get it. There's a narrative about BioWare you *really* want to be true, but the truth that it's a great place is too boring. Got it.

Seems like some people can't accept that a person would simply want a change of scenery.

Yeah, there's a lot of that conspiracy theorizing going on right now. Clearly all these Bioware devs are walking out because:

1) EA wants to make Mass Effect a MMPORG

2) The next DA game is going to be s**t and they're fleeing a sinking ship

3) there's a giant sentient plant monster that's taken over the studio.

There is a tiny part of me that hopes that last one is true. Sometimes the truth is so boring.

But seriously, no one stays in the same place forever.

User

So what you're saying is that the rumors of a vile snake pit at the Bioware offices is just that, rumors?

sebastianhanlon @hanlsp

we used to have a snake pit but @JayWatamaniuk showed up with a fedora and a whip and dealt with it

David Gaider @davidgaider

If only he could deal with the rolling boulders. That was a deal-breaker.

Jay Watamaniuk @JayWatamaniuk

I got lost on the way out.

Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes

Since working on it today: @eplerjc and I are giving a GDC talk on emotional themes in the Trespasser DLC! http://schedule.gdconf.com/session/dragon-age-inquisition-trespasser-building-to-an-emotional-theme

'Dragon Age Inquisition': Trespasser - Building to an Emotional Theme
John Epler  |  Lead Narrative Designer, BioWare Edmonton
Patrick Weekes  |  Lead Writer, BioWare Edmonton
Location:  Room 3016, West Hall

Date:  Monday, March 14
Time:  3:00pm - 3:30pm
Format: Session
Track:
Game Narrative Summit
Pass Type: Summits, Tutorials & Bootcamps Pass, All Access Pass - Get your pass now!

In this talk, the Lead Writer and Lead Narrative Designer of the Dragon Age franchise will take you through the process they used to develop the core narrative and thematic moments in the Trespasser DLC. They'll talk both about the ideas that went from ideation to ship in more-or-less the same shape as well as those that were born, lived, and died within the space of a day - and how they were able to tell the difference when it was still early enough to make the necessary changes.

Takeaway

Attendees will come away from this talk with an understanding of the importance of collaboration, iteration and experience in separating good ideas from bad as early as possible, and turning the good ideas into a shippable product.

I helped! Mostly by picturing what would get @User to call me in a rage at 4 am if she'd romanced Solas.

Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes

You WROTE some of those lines!

Good grief, I wish there was a way for non-devs to listen in on GDC talks. I'd love to hear that presentation. I hope some of it makes it to BioWare Base panels at some point.

3) there's a giant sentient plant monster that's taken over the studio.

They tried to warn us by showing the Thorian and what it could do in Mass Effect 1, but we didn't listen and just thought it was a game. :P

It's number three, obviously. Why do you think MEA was delayed? They have to fight off flora attacks while making the game lol.

I used Legos to demonstrate a plot point to @Mike_Laidlaw and @eplerjc, so I think those are work-related expenses now.

Daniel Kading @Daniel_Kading

Today's game design rigor: Perceived meaning of the word "cut". E.g. What Jack Nicholson did to the door w/ an axe in "The Shining"=cutting?

Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes

Is CHOP or HACK available? Cut seems more... precise than that.

Daniel Kading @Daniel_Kading

Exactly this, and how the problem goes both ways- does an arrow or thrown dagger HACK/CHOP a hangman's rope?

Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes

Yeah, I'd go with HACK vs SLICE. Axe hacks through a door, arrow slices a rope?

Daniel Kading @Daniel_Kading

Agreed! Yet both via a device who's purpose is to "cut", because it is sharp. It's made for an interesting UX theory problem.

Daniel Kading @Daniel_Kading

Imma bug you about it tomorrow, in fact- we're hoping your Word Powers can help us to... something?... this Gordian knot.

Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw

“Sultry”

Daniel Kading @Daniel_Kading

A snippet from the unauthorized Dragon Age 'making of' film, "Throw Laidlaw From The Train"!

Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw

All I ask is that your inevitable coup be swift and bloody.

Daniel Kading @Daniel_Kading

I can probably get one of those. Scope commitments, you know how it is.

Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw

Go with bloody, then. More on-brand and players keep hoping we’ll slow down our combat.

Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes

I intend to wear that dark green sweatshirt, complete with bloodstains, calling myself Laidlaw the Second.

Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes

Since Mike mentioned it, the only part of combat that seems to need slowed now is for staves and the twirling effect, IMO. Both bows and melee seem to be a decent middle ground form DAO and DA2.

Yeah, I'd say the staff twirl is the only thing I felt stood out as oddly out of place...
