It's back! http://bit.ly/1M9MHTy #DragonAge

Can I just say I love their choice of background image? Favorite shop in the Hissing Wastes. lol
I'd love to see an Easter Egg in DA4 with the Dog Vendor livin' large in Tevinter off the small mountain of gold we've dropped on him... ![]()

Can we? Please?

I used Legos to demonstrate a plot point to @Mike_Laidlaw and @eplerjc, so I think those are work-related expenses now.

Today's game design rigor: Perceived meaning of the word "cut". E.g. What Jack Nicholson did to the door w/ an axe in "The Shining"=cutting?
Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes
Is CHOP or HACK available? Cut seems more... precise than that.
Exactly this, and how the problem goes both ways- does an arrow or thrown dagger HACK/CHOP a hangman's rope?
Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes
Yeah, I'd go with HACK vs SLICE. Axe hacks through a door, arrow slices a rope?
Agreed! Yet both via a device who's purpose is to "cut", because it is sharp. It's made for an interesting UX theory problem.
Imma bug you about it tomorrow, in fact- we're hoping your Word Powers can help us to... something?... this Gordian knot.
“Sultry”
A snippet from the unauthorized Dragon Age 'making of' film, "Throw Laidlaw From The Train"!
All I ask is that your inevitable coup be swift and bloody.
I can probably get one of those. Scope commitments, you know how it is.
Go with bloody, then. More on-brand and players keep hoping we’ll slow down our combat.
Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes
I intend to wear that dark green sweatshirt, complete with bloodstains, calling myself Laidlaw the Second.

Laidlaw the Second, True Kwisatz Haderach of the Space Wolves
“Tell me of the Fenrir of your homeworld, Usul.”
Since Mike mentioned it, the only part of combat that seems to need slowed now is for staves and the twirling effect, IMO. Both bows and melee seem to be a decent middle ground form DAO and DA2.
Yeah, I'd say the staff twirl is the only thing I felt stood out as oddly out of place...

I think it was ok.... I just wanted some cooler spells. That weren't focus-based. I felt pretty weak as a level 27 mage in comparison to my 27 archer who was basically strong enough to almost break the game a few times. Or i'd at least like some flashy spells so it looks like i'm super duper powerful near the end. Big, pretty, etc.
Not every fan wants slow combat. 2H warrior for example was just perfect in DA2. I was excited to play it again in DAI but was so disappointed with it that I quit after the first fight. So I hope they don't slow down anything else, not the mages nor anything else. Just my opinion and sorry if this is too
off-topic. ![]()

They need wands that look like daggers, or that can serve as daggers,
. I gotta admit I'm loving the Encore staff schematic [from Trespasser]. You want color? Have all your mages with Encore-based staves. In addition to the special effects from some of their spells you get the colorful effects of the random associated buffs - sometimes all three at once! They are totally tripping the light fantastic, or maybe just some really good Fade dust,

Agreed. I think Firestorm was the only spell in DAI where I felt like a "powerful" mage...

I like the dagger-wand idea and I loved the Tevinter staff-spears in DAI. In the next game, I'm hoping we'll get a chance to use something like this (and, well... stab things with it). ![]()

Gave notes on @Official_GDC talks to be given by @eplerjc @PatrickWeekes and @hanlsp today. Really good stuff in both!
Well, @Official_GDC talk with @PatrickWeekes ready for primetime, or as ready as it'll ever be.
For those interested, here are the rest of the BioWare GDC Talks...
Getting Inquisitive About the AI of 'Dragon Age Inquisition'
http://schedule.gdco...age-inquisition
With multi-game franchises, AI is often iterated on from title to title providing a sense of continuity in development. By contrast, Dragon Age: Inquisition, the 3rd installment in the series, was the first Bioware game on the new Frostbite engine which meant the game systems and tools had to be completely rebuilt. This lecture will explain how they took this opportunity to address and improve the AI system and the challenges they faced in the process. The talk will cover the systems underlying the party AI system and how they leveraged the modular approach for constructing creature AI. Additionally, Sebastian will discuss issues surrounding working in a larger, more open, more ambient environment than existed in prior games. He will show how the end result of the new architecture is a more flexible, designer-friendly system that served the gameplay goals of the team and the title.
Takeaway
The attendee will understand how the various components of Dragon Age: Inquisition's AI architecture were designed, how they work together, and get concrete ideas for how the techniques can be applied in their own titles.
