I wonder if it means we can have a Warden background or one of our companions will be a Warden? Because both options are looking really good to me.

Also going back to the wilds will score a lot of brownie points around here.

I think it's a safe bet to say that one of our companions will be a Warden. In Bioware's blog post about character customization, they showed two examples. One was a Grey Warden, the other one was - presumably - Cassandra.

Yep - that Warden also looks rather like Stroud, who was going to Orlais when we saw him last in DA2.

Really digging the aravels ... I wonder if we will have the chance to see them in motion. That would be neat.

I also noticed the hint about taking over the fortress, but I don't wanna read too much into that only to end up disappointed later. The same goes for the possibility of varied background options for the protagonist. So, cautiously optimistic?

As long as I can have this cloak as a mage, I'm not as bummed out over not being able to be an elf :)

The 'player castle' has been pretty heavily hinted at for a while, not least via the leaked marketing survey that mentioned it as a game feature. We don't know how much game content is there, or what sort of role it plays in the story, or the extent of customisability... but we do know it exists.

The varied backgrounds is interesting, Mike seemed to suggest they were quite detailed. Looking forward to finding out more information.

I just hope they aren't as useless to the story as Mass Effect's. David Gaider said they would have a "significant impact" on the story so I hope they provide something unique each time you start a new game, to encourage replayability and to have a little variation.

Same goes for the castle, should it prove to be as interactive as we speculate it to be.

So no race selection and no origin stories? Well, that's two of my top wishes shot down. Increased customization sounds wonderful though, provided they actually deliver. I won't believe it until I see it.....

ME could've used them a lot better, yeah. After the first game they were practically forgotten.

But DA3's only needs to influence one game, and if they're tied into the classes and major faction conflicts I think there's a lot of potential there. Not just for unique dialogue, but separate quest paths or interactions with major characters based on who we were before we were the Inquisitor.

(I was hoping for a small playable section where we could walk around and talk to people before the events that make the PC into the Inquisitor, but unfortunately it doesn't look like it's going to happen)

Where the mages ended up in Asunder? Maybe - although that picture looks way too chilly to be the same place as the book.

Also, presumably the Seeker/Templar march on Andoral's Reach and the mage rebellion is going to be a pretty significant plot point in DA3. I can't really see the Inquisition gaining control over that fortress until that conflict is resolved, and it sounded more like the player castle was a persistent feature throughout most of the game.

If you look at Thedas map (did so 1 minute ago), you'll see that Andoral's Reach is located is some "Blasted Hills". My guess would be Adamant Fortress.  Ex Grey Warden Keap which is closer to "South pole"

I never thought of that. The backgrounds only being necessary for one game could mean good things but we'll see.

If not a small playable section, which is what I wanted in DAII, to show Hawke living in Lothering for a few days, maybe a small narrated section where it is explained to us what the PC is before he/she becomes an Inquisitor. Something akin to what Duncan said in the begining of each Origin story but a little larger in scope.

I do hope we get separate quests and interactions with characters based on the background of our choice. It's unlikely given Bioware's choice to show everything the first time you play through but hopefully it is meaningful in an interesting and significant way.

Also, Andoral's Reach was a ruin, and chilly (it was snowing at the end of the book). I wonder; could that leafy ruiny one be it...? Not sure the climate would match.

Don't recall
Adamant Fortress being snowy... (although "we" were there just before
first snowfall).

>coughmultiplayercough<

Seriously.  You may not like the idea of multi-player, but that's probably where you're going to get to play as dwarves, Qunari, Chevaliers, elves, etc.  Probably similar to Mass Effect 3.

Has this been confirmed yet?  Are we sure that the PC will be leading the Inquisition instead of, say, fighting it?  I've seen it thrown around a lot here that we'll be playing the Inquisitor, so I'm wondering where that came from.  What did I miss?

Back when we knew the player would be the Inquisitor and we had a rough idea of the worldstate for DA3 (via that survey), I did think the first part of the game would show us a small vignette of our player charcter's life just before the events that begin the Inquisition. Attending the 'peace conference' as a person from our chosen background might've had a lot of opportunities for unique dialogue. I thought we might've got, say, a five-to-ten minute bunch of conversations with 'origin' characters (mages if we're a mage, a Templar commander if we're a Templar, Orlesian court officials if we're a noble, whatever) to set the scene for DA3 and then a tutorial combat sequence common to all backgrounds as the events unfolded. It would've been an interesting way to get players familiar with their chosen background's political situation in Thedas before the action starts.

Since there doesn't actually seem to be any gameplay elements to the backgrounds (as per Mike's answer just recently), and it looks like none of what I speculated might happen will actually be the game, I'm wondering how the player character even becomes the Inquisitor, and the general way the game starts.

Given the outline, the attack on the conference does seem to be the starting point of the game (it's in Orlais, after all, and it's a natural progression from that to regrouping somewhere else and the founding of the Inquisition) - but will we start as the Inquisitor? Does every background start as a bystander that gets roped into responding to the conference chaos and then the founding of the Inquisition? If the conference attack is where the Big Bad is revealed and the main storyline is revealed to the player, it stands to reason we'd play even for a short while as the PC before they begin the Inquisition.

A marketing survey with a fair chunk of DA3 information was being distributed on internet survey sites a few months ago, even before DA3: Inquisition was formally announced. I guess they were seeing what features to emphasise in their marketing, but it leaked messily everywhere.

The survey included (among other things) a small plot summary, part of it was:

"From the ashes of [a big disaster], something new rises: The Inquisition. As the Inquisitor, it falls to you to build up your power and martial your forces, uncover secrets and build connections across the world. You must explore forgotten spaces, uncover ancient mysteries and uproot those who would destroy the fabric of the world."

Also from the German version:

"Take the Inquisitor's cloak and lead the only force able of bringing light into the darkness. Choose the direct method and gather your armies, send spies into the shadows or engage in a political war, make friends and use your connections indirectly: it is up to you how you lead the inquisition. But you'll have to take lead of it from the beginning."

I actually didn't mind this at all.
As for the love for Alistair- it's there and still as strong, make no mistake about it- but seeing that most (if not all) of his fans hooked him up with their respective Wardens, we would much rather him stay loyal than for him to be a LI again or even a party member again (because he's supposed to stay with your Warden if you both survived). Not only does this fit the story better, but his character as well. Though Alistair's appearances on DA2 were short (whether as Warden or King), I loved the acknowledgement that him and my Warden were an item. Also, Cullen would be a better fit for this story, seeing what he's lived through the Circle of Ferelden's mage uprising and Kirkwall's templar tyranny. Lastly, Cullen's awkward charm might just rival Alistair's (though they are obviously heavily different). Besides, it's time to give another nice guy a shot, don't ya think?

lol! it's okay. i want to know moar about the PC meself. i want and need to know more. i've been eyeballing all these pieces hoping to finnd a teeny tiny inquisitor.

Also, someone named appealtoreason in another thread said that when the DA team was talking abt DA3, it seemd the emphasis would be on "myth hunting". Discovering old secrets about the past of Thedas. Instead of it only being about the mage/templar conflict.

Which brings me much happiness because I LOVE myth hunting.

Ooh, that would be fantastic!  I'm curious about the fight between the mages and the Templars but I don't want it to be the main focus of the game.  It would be enough to have it in the background, perhaps the focus of a series of quests.  Myth hunting and expanding the lore would be fantastic as the main point of the game, particularly if if ties in with ending the conflict via some esoteric discovery.
