:o  "Bioware will no longer have to put up with toxic tripe"...now that bsn has been shanked in the back?

You know, remember that ordeal with Jen Hepler. When she was mercilessly attacked? That started on yer precious Reddit.  Not here. It started with some one calling her the "cancer that is killing BW"..blah, blah, blah.  It started and flourished on your sweet reddit and perpetuated itself further on your precious Twitter. Not the bsn.

If you want to speak on it, then get it right and tell the whole story.

Honestly, I see many more toxic people here than I do on any other Bioware related social platform.

Lot's of awesome stuff here too of course (why else would I be here), but there always has been a serious problem with trolls/toxic people not getting banned here.

(also I think a few people seem to be blaming Gaider for an example he didn't give? Unless he deleted it or something, I have seen him give any, only other posters in this topic. Don't blame Gaider for that)

Just chipping in to agree with Abyss108 that what Gaider said was only the first two lines of the quote being bandied about - the rest was a comment by someone else, as shown by the fact that they say 'I agree with David here' (paraphrased). We don't need more miscommunication feeding the negativity that is probably going to come of this.

You're right, I only skimmed it. Okay, well then the first half of my post is still accurate. He's a jerk, and it was a mean thing to say, in short.

I don't. I've seen the abuse Twitter gave to them. And Reddit only recently got "legit". Reddit was a terrible place. And Tumblr is full of vinegar.  The internet is full of vinegar.

The idea that somehow BSN is this unique species of bile spitting frog in a world of rainbows is laughably ridiculous. Yes, there is friction and trolls, etc, but there is more cool stuff than the other stuff.

It frustrates me that all the cool things about BSN are completely swept under the rug in favor of making the BSN some personal whipping boy. It's a mind ...eff. Got people convinced they're so bad that they must deserve bad things happening to them. It's BS. The perception of BSN is skewed .

*If Gaider did not say that last bit, then my apologies to David..for that one.

In fact, I find this place much less toxic than practically everywhere else on the internet.

I just choked on my drink.

You must be using a different internet than I, because I've seen more vitriol on this board than I've seen on the rest of the internet put together (and that includes Reddit, because vitriol there gets downvoted into oblivion).

I was on the forum during Dragon Age 2. It got ... bad.

I'll miss some aspects of the forum. I won't miss the "Bring back the Warden" and the "Make DA like the Witcher" threads, though.

This is a shame. This thread is where I keep up on Dragon Age news.

Anyway, they're not getting rid of 'toxicity'. They're only shifting it.

I completely agree. As for the last part, Gaider certainly did say that he was happy this place was closing down in a rather... unfortunate way. So you won't see me changing my opinion of him anytime soon.

Where did David Gaider say he was happy with the BSN closing? I only saw him say it was overdue, but still sad.

Of course there is vitriol on other places too. But the difference is that those places aren't "official" so don't reflect on the developers on any way. A place like twitter/tumblr/reddit that is run and moderated by no one, or any random person on the internet has no expectations. Anyone can go to a random site on the internet and start a hate/bullying campaign. That's very different from the person spewing that **** on the official channels and the developers saying "yes, this is the type person we want to enable".

The correct action was to moderate this place properly from the start, but it's a bit late to say that now. They could probably fix this place with enough effort, but reputations take a long time to change and they would have to deal with a bunch of idiotic "anti-censorship" campaigns if they did that. They have decided it's not worth the effort.

I'm not saying I necessarily agree with the decision to shut this place down, but the whole "Bioware forums are toxic/crazy" has proven quite true for the time I've been here. There's also lot's of good people, but the bad sticks in people's minds more. If you take a glance at the forum, you don't remember those ten people posting normal things when there's also a guy sat next to them talking about how he wishes the female companion in the next game would be his sex slave to help the "master race" and that Bioware are out to personally destroy his life when they don't make it happen, and it's treated that this is a reasonable opinion to have and post about. And that's not even getting into the actual toxic stuff I see posted against the developers here.

Again - this stuff exists elsewhere as well, but some random crazy in some corner of the internet is not the same as Bioware deciding to host and promote that content themselves.

I'd like this place to stay - but I do understand the reasoning behind this choice.

Where did David Gaider say he was happy with the BSN closing? I only saw him say it was overdue, but still sad.

Perhaps it looks that way on the surface, but if you've read more of his comments you'll realize that he's being sarcastic, which is to say, insulting to the people here. He's being his usual snarky self, which is of course much less amusing when you're on the receiving end. He only thinks it's "sad" that it didn't close sooner (because we're terrible). Reread it, it'll make sense.

Okay so he did NOT "say that he was happy" about the BSN closing. You are extrapolating and reading into his intent and saying he said things he did not say.

It's not good to spread misinformation.

He's not being sarcastic. His comment is what it says: he's sad it's closing down but also is of the belief that it's well past due. He's not saying it's sad it didn't close sooner.  Those are different things. Obviously, he thinks it's past due because he has had many negative experiences on the board, but he's not happy it's closing.

(Un)coincidentally, this comment is exactly the type of thing that soured Gaider on the BSN in the first place (see also: comments on dwarf romances). Twisting his words to set up a strawman to make him look bad.

That people are interpreting it differently shows how ambiguous it is, though, isn't it? When I saw his tweet, when he qualified "sad" with "long overdue", I thought he meant it wasn't really sad.

(Though I didn't think he meant he was happy either).

I didn't feel it was ambiguous at all. The implication from your reading is that people can't be sad about things they think should have happened sooner, which I don't think is a position that makes much sense. For example, an intervention with an alcoholic family member, if I'm going to use a personal example.

Edit: I'll admit that I'm less sympathetic with other lifers on this board that feel like they're losing a great community, because I didn't really feel that way. It might seem nonsensical coming from a person with 10k posts, but I disliked as many posters on this board as I liked, perhaps more. For every Aimee post that taught me some cool historical parallel to Thedas, or a Dean The Young post deconstructing the validity of an argument, there were 10 posters who seemed like they were only here to bring the mood down. Many posters on this board misuse the word criticism, thinking that it protects any sort of bad post because it's their opinion. After awhile, I started looking for another primary means of discussing BioWare games, because I wasn't willing to sort through the trash to find the gems. BW apparently felt similarly, and perhaps they would have taken steps to save this place had game-specific boards not also become something of a relic themselves. The user rate on pretty much any official forum is very low and reflects a general sea change towards multi-topic communities like Reddit or NeoGAF. That, I think, was the nail on the coffin, though I don't agree with their decision to totally delete all the archives.

My interpretation might have been coloured more by the fact that he qualified the "sad". But you may be right, I'm not Gaider, so it's just my interpretation here.

Heh, I'm really looking forward to more opinions expressed in 140 characters.

I also feel it wasn't at all ambiguous - feeling sad about something that has to happen/should have happened is not an uncommon sentiment.

I notice DG has a few posts on the Beamdog forums, so my interpretation is he's sad the mods allowed the trolls to overrun the forums and drive the Devs away.

The BW forums should have been a good place for the Devs and fans to hangout and interact.

That doesn't mean blindly agreeing with everything, it means not attacking them personally.

I'm just here to express my thanks to Hrungr, Elite Pinecone, BioFan, and all the rest of you who made this thread one of my favorites on the forum. I hope that some version of this thread will continue on somewhere else because as a non-twitter person it was a great way to get in on all the pre-game hype. I've never followed the development of a game before, and without this thread it wouldn't have been possible. I wish the forums weren't closing (especially as someone who's a big fan of Bioware's legacy games), but that's for another thread.

Just once again, let me say thank you.
