*cough* Varric and Sebastian *cough*

Sebastian was a a DLC comapnion for the main storyline.

So yes it would be very redundant to have two ranged rogues as main storyline companions

Only considering main story companions, no DLC,
DAO
Warrior:  Alistair Sword and Shield, Sten Two handed, Oghren Two Handed
Rogue: Zevran dual weild, Leliana archer
Mage: Morrigan damage, Wynne healer

DA2
Warrior: Aveline sword and shield, Fenris two handed
Rogue: Varric archer, Isabella dual weild
Mage: Merril damage, Anders damage/healer

I was not even disagreeing with that, just pointing out that they have done this before (even if he was a DLC companion).
As I said earlier, it would be reasonable to expect at least 6 companions to cover the basic roles, everything else would be extra. At the moment we have:
2 warriors: Cassandra and the kossith guy who keeps photobombing the screenshots of various locations. Cassandra might be sword and shield, "Iron Bull" - two handed.
1 rogue: Varric - archer
1 mage: Vivienne, who does not sound like a healer at this point, but that's up in the air.
Therefore, it would be reasonable to expect at least 2 more companions from the concept art to make it  into the main game - a dual wielding rogue and a mage.

Then again, if the combat and class systems have been drastically reworked (addition of new weapon types, specialisations?), this all might not apply to DA:I.

In the case of Varric and Sebastian, we didn't have like a regular bowman, just a crossbow, so i feel it was somewhat justified.

Did you look at the GI screenshots? Cassandra is "two-hander", although she's wielding it one-handed half the time.

Based on yesterday's update it looks like they're just synthesizing the stuff from their magazine coverage while adding some new concept art so I'm not sure how excited I am. But then again, maybe there's an off chance we'll get more new info.

Yes, I did. And you are right - there is no shield, but Cassandra is wielding it one-handed all the time. And her weapon looks more like a bastard sword than a two-hander, especially by Bioware standards.

Don't get me wrong - I am not certain she is our sword and board character, but I am not ready to write this off as impossible just yet. And there is a chance that "Iron Bull" will not be a companion as well, although I doubt it very much - he has been shown in many location and with different gear, not to mention that there has been a very simillar character pitch in the leaked survey, however unreliable it might be.

I always play mainly as a female. And no, I don't play female because I'm a female, and I identify. I play female because, male heroes greatly out number them. If it was the other way around, I would play as a male.

She's holding it with two hands against the Nightmare (the screens with Varric and Vivienne against the weird looking mouth with legs).

Although, I don't mind her being a single sword person most of the time, that's a bit the fighting she had in DoTS, well when she wasn't dual wielding.

Why are we assuming that Casandra is a warrior? I always thought of her as more of a rogue myself.

What if she's a new spec for the Warrior, like that chain to pull people in

You are right, and I somehow overlooked that one. My mistake then - she seems to be our dual-wielding warrior.

Yep, she might be. And new specialisations would potentially change a lot in the expected character roster.

On their article they said they played a demo on 3 maps...

Maybe we get to see some gameplay from there...

Cullen will most likely be the sword and board character. Cass will either be a two hander or like Ares said, she will be a new type of style that uses a sword and grapple.

That makes sense. A templar would be an obvious sword and board choice, DAII ninja-templars notwithstanding.

I hope you can make any companion anything in their respective classes.

For example, you can have Allistar be a tank or a 2h dps. You can have sten as a tank. Morrigan a healer.

I hated how DA2 forced characters onto us. Especially when I DID NOT LIKE Anders. But he was the only healer...

It's possible it might be like DAo where all companions had a default and prefered style but you could change them. In DA2 everyone had a prefered style, you could just not change them(without mods)

DAO doesn't count since you could change them. I made Zev an archer many, many times.

Honestly it's not based on any in game context. I guess I always pictured her as a rogue because she puts a dagger (rogue weapon) through the journal when Varric pisses her off at the beginning of DA II and because I've always associated her with being somewhat of a foil to Leliana solely on the fact that they're both powerful agents of the Divine spposedly working together on a mission to find Hawke.

Granted, it's all based on grondless assumption I have but I don't see how my arbitrary image of her as a rogue is any more or less valid than arbitrary assumptions that she's a warrior.

Da2 forced many things other than characters, playing as a warrior per exemple in Da2 hawke is unable to duel wield what a down that was for me, thats one reason why I only have 1 warrior hawke, she is Sword and shield. pff

I didnt like Sebastian and yet hawke watched him walk away from a battle like a champ... arg!!!! as you can see hawke was unable to pull  out the murder knife and kill that whinny ....

Have we heard anything about that guy after his appearance alongside Cass as the very early illustration of Bioware's latest companion customisation system concept? There are far too many candidates for the warrior spots as is: Cassandra, Cullen, Grey Warden, Chevalier, Iron Bull.

That's possible, but not probable. The presence of Varric, who not only despises the thought of becoming a dual-wielding rogue but also refuses to part with his veapon of choice, does not bode well for this scenario. He can always be an exception to the general rule, but I doubt it.

It's her murder knife. Everyone in Thedas has one.

Rogues don't fight with two-handed swords in DA games.

Well Bianca is also part of his character, getting rid of Bianca on Varric is pretty much getting rid of a big chunk of him.

No matter what people say I still think the guy (behind stabby's right arm) in this photo:

Image IPB

Is said Grey Warden character, he's repping the colors and his hair doesn't look a bit like Cullen's.
