Well would be super nice to have Shale back as a companion .
Then her and Varric can fall in love.
I like Shale , she was great and from what we know we 're really lacking female companions.
We only have 3 ?Sera/Cassandra/Vivienne.

That doesn't make it any less valid. Isabela, Varric and Alistair all appeared in the comics and were essentially indentical to their in-game appearance.

In concept art Sera seems to have 2 incarnations: one with white hair, one with a brown ponytail type thing. Perhaps these 2 girls are in fact different companions?

Meh. Sten's an unhorned Qunari so he's always been designated as being somehow "special" (something recognised even by the Qunari themselves).  I don't see any reason why he'd be distinct from his fellows in other areas as well. It's also necessary not to give Sten too radical a change to the extent where he'd be unrecognisable from his original design.

In addition, they say that the character hasn't been revealed, but we have already seen the change that sten undergoes.

I just think that shale turning into a dwarf female would be a bigger change than sten becoming more muscly.

I don't think so ...I think the punky elf was the very early concept ( re used from the test cinematics they did before DA2)
They probably changed her a bit ,so she isn't a elf version of Jack.
Besides there's the Elf dude from the war room concept art who also has crazy hair...
It's a pretty strong visual hairstyle , mohawk /big bread /shaved head with dreadlocks ...
I don't know ,it's possible that all elves are now rebel and cool ?

Maybe Shale has finally found a way to become a dwarf again but... my Warden will be sad she can't celebrate this event with her bff Still, that would be awesome

I guess they didn't mean Lelianna or Morrigan - both were already introduced. Alistair's VA once said that he wasn't contacted for VA of Alistair. Sten unlikely will go through more changes. 
Oghren? How can you change him? Zevran? Oh, DA2 was enough XD Wynne is dead :.(

I think they reused some old concept art for this , the Inquisitor doesn't even have the Inquisition symbol , the sword is missing ...he wears the Seeker symbol.

it seems like you don't know what Qunari is.
For exemple this is Qunari

Qunari is a person who follow the Qun.
A kossith is a race of Sten and Arishok. Some are horned, some are not. Hornless kossiths are considered to be "scary" by the rest of them

Don-mika, I know full well what a qunari is thanks. The devs have said that calling them Kossith is wrong, so I'm just using the most convenient term.

For the drastically changed character, I suspect Shale.  Also considered Sten, but he didn't look dramatically different when Alistair saw him in the comics.

And going back to gated romance content is disappointing.

Yeah,that's the biggest DA:I dissapointment I have.The romance article said that companions won't say/do stuff without you speaking to them first.

I love it how in DA2 things could happen without your direct infulence.
For example:
*SPOILER ALERT*
Isabella left you in ACT II,without you approaching her first.I was really afraid she was going to leave my PC.It was a suprise.
And then she had that badass epic moments where she came in at the best moment possible.#Best part of DA2

These sort of things are suprises and make for great plots.I don't want every single dialouge to be planned by my character.

But maybe I'm just paranoid.

Yeah, that bugs me.  One of the reasons I hate sexuality labels when referring to myself is all the baggage that comes with it.

that was something particular to that quest , so they can still do those kinds of things and moments regardless of how romances are handled.

My money's on either Shale or Sten.

I'd actually wager it's Leliana.

Sten's only change would be from slightly large human (Origins) to the actual Qunari (Kossith for those obsessed with technicalities) design that had been "intended" but was never made in Origins.  Shale was still a golem at the end of Asunder which ended in 9:40. Unless a re-dwarfication ritual can be done in a short ammount of time Shale is still a golem.

As mentioned previously, Zevran's already been changed for the worse, Oghren can't really be changed. Alistair may have been changed, but it is doubtful.  Wynne is officially deceased for good unless she becomes a "fade ghost". Morrigan's already been revealed, and I really doubt they would bring back Dog. Loghain is optional, so I do not think he would be the former character.

I am unsure of which secondary character would be noteworthy to hint at. It could be Connor, but he is also "optional" since he could be dead.

Leliana would be the prime candidate because she could have "died", somehow was "resurected" if she did die, d we do know that Gaider (I believe) mentioned that it would be further explained if she was "brought back to life" for DA2.

Edit:

Merril could be another option, but I am unsure what would have changed about her.

Doesn't need to be that way though, sexual preference is just another part of a person's psyche and like so many things these might change or remain the same throughout their lives. it's not about there being a stigma against same sex relations between people in thedas (because there isn't) but because you might not be their type and that says something about the character even if it's something your character didn't want to hear.
funnily enough, a saints row 4 line actually said it best.
"I know You want to, but I don't"

Merrill? She could have become an abomination, though I sure hope that's not the case. Alistair is fine at the end of the comics and in act 3.

And now that I think about it, they're saying "changed apperance in the time between DAO and DAI", so it's most probably someone that didn't appear in DAII.
The safest bet would indeed be Shale.
