Don't much care for the tone of the reference to 'some fans who actually enjoyed the linear story-telling style'.
I would trade any amount of running around in a big, empty world for the sort of narrative strength we've had in the DA games.

You know, there's no rule that says that a big world has to be empty.

Skyrim certainly doesn't feel empty. It's pretty much teaming with life and things to do. One of my favorite things to do in Skyrim was wandering around to find Dwarven ruins and caves and ancient catacombs. I basically slagged off the story of the game because adventuring through tombs and what not was much more exciting to me.

I think that's a great idea BUT I want Dragon Age to be Dragon Age and not a Skyrim rip-off.

Bioware needs to establish the key componenets of what makes a Dragon Age game while still drawing influences from games ranging from The Witcher 2 to The Elder Scrolls.

It can be done right. While playing Morrowind I wouldn´t remember there was a main plot, in Gothic 1&2 the world was big, but not so much that you would forget there was a main plot. I´m more worried about BW trying to appeal to other areas that are not their strenghts. DA2 failed miserably (IMHO) with actiony combat, no idea what they were trying with ME3 narrative forcing Shepard to have a firm personality.

There's no reason you can't have both a strong narrative and world exploration in the same game. Aaryn Flynn also mentions Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights as previous Bioware games that did had a large amount of exploration, and BG still had a very strong, PC-centered narrative (NWN admittedly not so much, at least not the OC). I personally thought DA:O achieved a great balance of these two elements, but DAII felt claustrophobic to me. Even though years passed during the game, the main maps didn't change in a noticeable way (and that's not even getting into the reused maps, which the devs have already acknowledged as a problem), and I personally didn't feel the narrative was strong enough to compensate for the lack of exploration. I'd be happy with at least a return to DA:O levels of exploration, but if they want to aim beyond that more power to them. I hope it accompanies a return to DA:O narrative quality, as well.

I love the idea that they're going to work to open the DA-verse up a bit more. This makes me very happy. That combined with your companions and solid story...just wow.

Mind you, I'm not interested in sandbox necessarily. But, yes, give me a little room to move. Let me breath a little bit. The DA world is an intriguing, amazing place. I'd like to experience some more of it. The joy of discovery, and all that.

If Bioware can keep their amazing storytelling, characters, and open their worlds up with more exploration without major compromise, you have the potential at a true masterpiece. You can't find many sandbox games with great storytelling/characters. And just to be clear, you don't have to be Skyrim in size to be "sandbox". I'd considering Dragon's Dogma a sandbox game and the world is that big. You're not really confined by artificial barriers though.

If only Skyrim had the characters/story to fit their lore/exploration, it would be perfect. I don't think anyone is expecting DA3 to be like Skyrim in exploration. But I think it's a reasonable expectation to believe they're going back to their roots with how they did exploration in Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Mass Effect 1. If they modernize that formula, it will please me greatly. ME1's exploration had the right idea, it just wasn't done very well. All the environments looked the same and you couldn't really do much on each uncharted world. I really think with Frosbite, this is the type of design we'll see with DA3(only done much better). Bioware is a bigger studio than they were when they completed ME1, so, resources shouldn't be an excuse to build claustrophobic worlds, IMO.

Bioware's level design is beyond dated. It's time to bite the bullet and put a lot of resources into exploration. If Dragon's Dogma can do it on a short dev cycle, Bioware can too. And speaking of Dragon's Dogma, that game did customization perfectly. You have clothing+armor in each body slot. That's how you mix and match armor. I don't think that game had a single armor design share the same visual either...I want DA3 to be like that. I've never seen the same visual style for a pawn in DD. That game is the shining example of what DA3 needs to do - iconic looks and unlimited visual customization variety. Customization and exploration is the craze these days for a reason, IMO.

DA3 is seriously showing some promise. If they can pull this off with a solid, satisfying game experience--it doesn't have to be miraculous and profound, just solid and satisfying--this could be quite the contribution.

I've got my fingers crossed for you, DA.

I can't find that thread or links to anything but the DA2 promo items. Could you link us to the pages?

Good. I'm glad they're going back to their ROOOOOOOOOTS (note: emphasis on roots) with Baldur's Gate one. Which could be considered a semi-sandbox RPG.

Hmmm, you know I could have sworn there was ME loot, too. Last night. Perhaps I was mistaken and looking at my own content. It was just such a beautiful blur of stuff.

So, my bad abt the ME stuff. :)

Oh same as I was half-expecting Bioware if they were making an appearance at the VGA, they will only be hinting at the upcoming ME3 DLC. But when they said surprise reveal, my ears perked up. :P

I was watching VGA live, I swear that dark souls 2 trailer made me hop around, I thought it was DRAGON AGE 3... When I saw Dark souls 2 at the end... I was like: (..... wtf?? but but.... the dragon and the.... WTF WTF WTF???!!) lol Everything from that trailer, the environment and all, is like whoever made it was "inspired" by the DA3 artworks... :c

I guess.. When they said we won't be getting any new info bout the game this year, they were dead serious... Posted Image
