I would love it if BioWare did a spy thriller RPG set in modern day. A spy video game with the tone of Casino Royale and/or The Bourne Ultimatum that forces you to make touch decisions and lets you feel like James Bond would be fantastic.

Like Alpha Protocol?

Bioware has been there and done that. The project was killed.Schumacher told us about it a couple of months back.

Yeah, I'm curious as well. I know they killed Jade Empire 2, but I hadn't heard of an AP style game in the works...

I can't remember where Schumacher's comments were but here's Trent Oster's take on it:

Google Bioware's cancelled spy game and you'll see several articles about it.

I think Mike Laidlaw (or someone else?) at PAX mentioned that some stuff they had started to develop for that game (mechanics/system/tools-wise) were being used in DAI (same with some elements of the cancelled DA2 Expansion).  Was it called Revolver?  Anyways, I seem to feel that the "walk away from convos" mechanic that Laidlaw is very excited about had its roots there.  I could be totally wrong though, a lot of PAX feels like a fever-dream because I was very excited and I could , therefore, be mistaken.

Hopefully we'll hear more about them in the Spring when they return to spy on the DAI team for us.  :innocent:

Agreed. If they were to make a game that was equal parts Bioware RPG and Red Dead Redemption, then that would be a sight to see.

Ahhh, this would thrill me. RDR was a deeply affecting game with a fantastic setting and some really great characters. I get starry eyes just thinking what the Bioware writing team would do with some of the stories you could tell in that setting.

Interesting, I hadn't heard that - do you mean Revolver was the name of the technology, or the cancelled project? As far as I'm aware from reading the few articles about it, the spy RPG had a focus on digital acting, but they couldn't convince EA that it would work (or sell well, I guess).

I know Mike said they'd tried to do walking away from conversations a few times before, and DAI is the time when they've finally got it working well.

"Walking away from conversations" is conversations getting muted if you walk away midsentence? (Several other games already have this)

And "Digital acting"? What´s this?

Not sure how it works, but we saw a brief example in the PAX demo where the Inquisitor walked away from a soldier (I don't remember if it was in the middle of a sentence or after they'd finished talking)

And digital acting refers to using motion capture, voice acting, facial scanning or animation to make characters that can express emotion and realistically behave/move like human beings. The example I think Bioware gave for the spy RPG was a scene in The Bourne Identity movie, where two characters are fighting with really intense movements and facial expressions, etc. It means having more realistic characters doing things that make you think they're human, rather than a bunch of pixels.

(Two recent games that I think are well-known for their digital acting are The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls)
