I just thought about companions. There'll be 9. So they could show us someone new.

I know I'm likely in the distinct minority on this, but I'd really wish they didn't show us companions at ALL. It ruins some of the experience for me when I know every single person I meet will/won't join the party ahead of time.

Those who knew that Jorveth and Rory weren't companions for DA:O likely didn't place much emphasis on them, but someone who didn't know might have attached onto them and their fairly detailed back stories, making their deaths that much more gruesome. Similarly, knowing Zevran was a recruit when you first see him being hired to kill you and later when you capture and get the chance to kill him before even waking him up can be viewed very differently than if you didn't have that foreknowledge.

It is for this reason I go dark before a game, particularly a Bioware game, I am interested in comes out. I HATE having companions revealed. So I'd really like if they waited a lot later into 2014 before they start revealing.

yup you're definitely in the minority.

The romance lover players want to know who the companions are, what the romance options will be.

Even players who don't like romances want to know the mcompanions back stories.:?

I prefer super-vague fun teases and system reveals more than actual story/companion reveals. I'm slowly cutting back on how much of the reveal stuff I will look at, and will likely go dark in the upcoming months, as I don't want too much spoiled. (In my first run of DA:O I killed Zev and Wynne. Didn't know they could be recruited until towards the end when someone asked me if I was romancing Zev). The only probably with going dark is that I will miss everyone in this thread. :'( Maybe I can just go semi-dark... Hmm.

I prefer to know nothing at all about followers except where they can be found in the game. I missed out on recruiting one of the followers in DA2 because I didn't realize a particular quest was his recruit quest.

That's interesting, given your unique position to be someone who follows and reports on the series.

But I agree - it is much more interesting when you don't know who will be important, let alone who will be in your party.

I forgot to add Iron Bull to the list of characters that have been revealed, as well.

If there are nine, we now likely know of 7 of them - Varric, Viviene, Cassandra, Iron Bull, Sera (crazy elf chick), shaved head Magister elf, and grizzled warrior/Grey Warden (rumored to possibly be Stroud).

There's only 2 more left to reveal, really. If they revealed "one or two more" there wouldn't be any mystery at all.

I know - confirmations that they are actually party members doesn't exist... but I'll bet my shoes that those seven are companions, guaranteed.

Spoilers for the mass effect series below, for those who haven't played it yet.

Kind of off topic, but I once read somewhere about a person who had played both Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, and when he came to the Rannoch part on ME3, had absolutely no idea why the geth suddenly were acting all buddy-buddy. The reason was that when he got the chance to wake Legion up he didn't take it. He gave Legion away to Cerberus with no second thoughts of it and thus never got more out of the geth other than what was shown in the original mass effect. Just imagine that.

Interesting:

“We are in the Arbor Wilds,” Kell surmised, studying the terrain.
“In the south of Orlais. Dangerous country. A difficult place
to live, to be certain.”
Duncan looked up, interested. “Dangerous? Because of the animals?”
“Because of the dryads.”

Fascinating. That's why I'm with Jimmy when it comes to the subject of companion reveal.

But then again, I always said to myself I'd never ever recruit Fenris if I didn't know beforehand he could be recruited as long as Hawke helps him with Danarius. Then I recently replayed DAII and saw Fenris intro... there's no way you'd send this unique glowing creature away even if he could be just trying to deceive you. You know he's not a random NPC.

Legion is the same because, seriously, how can you not have Shepard even try to talk to someone that helped her, especially someone from the enemy side? It's not like you can blame the marketing exposition.

Zevran, on the other hand, I'd have killed right away if I didn't know anything about the game, and I wish I didn't. Some characters are more subtle than others and it's fun when you don't know if they are potential companions or not.

I'm not so sure about being Lady of the Forest a dryad. I've always considered her as a spirit.

When the developers of a game have your personal contact information and have met with you numerous times due to your coverage of a series, rather than just passively following it, that's unique.

Ah, you may be confusing me with someone else, Fast Jimmy!  I only met the devs at PAX2013 in the BioWare Base with everyone else where I squeed like a silly fangirl and probably made them all unconfortable, and have since chatted with a few of them via Twitter a little.  :)  I'm no one special at all!

Also, in re: wanting to know everything beforehand so that you don't miss anything (like Zev or Fenris) - I LOVE having my first playthrough be imperfect! I generally do everything "wrong" and it is messy and EXCELLENT.  Then I go and watch lots of youtube clips and read the wikia and all that good stuff so when I play it again I can take different paths that I missed.  I find that's more fun and satisfying for me.  However, not everyone wants to do multiple playthroughs, so that's cool.  Everyone wants different things, and that's totally awesome.  :)

Yes. This is the one I mentioned. Thank you for attaching it. Both concepts are about the forest with big and thick trees. One with "in shadows unspoiled by the fires of Right" and another with "Seek the light, for the wicked take root in the darkest corners", as if there is a relationship.

Jimmy, you have so much more restraint than I do. Each time a Bioware game comes out I promise myself that this time I'm going to go into it cold without foreknowledge of companions or major plot point... And then I'm lucky if my impatience hasn't led me to watch half of someone else's playthrough in a YouTube walkthrough between the time it is released and the time I get it.
