In the world of Thedas there's some picture of lush forest, and a tree with a big face carved in it.
It's on the page about elven religions. It's a bit creepy imho , but it's possible we will stumble upon it?
Anyway happy new year everyone!:wizard:

Fast Jimmy "I know I'm likely in the distinct minority on this, but I'd really wish they didn't show us companions at ALL. It ruins some of the experience for me when I know every single person I meet will/won't join the party ahead of time.

Those who knew that Jorveth and Rory weren't companions for DA:O likely didn't place much emphasis on them, but someone who didn't know might have attached onto them and their fairly detailed back stories, making their deaths that much more gruesome. Similarly, knowing Zevran was a recruit when you first see him being hired to kill you and later when you capture and get the chance to kill him before even waking him up can be viewed very differently than if you didn't have that foreknowledge.

It is for this reason I go dark before a game, particularly a Bioware game, I am interested in comes out. I HATE having companions revealed. So I'd really like if they waited a lot later into 2014 before they start revealing."

Absolutely agree here! I feel the same :innocent:

I hadn't thought of this, previously. I think we've seen enough companions. We've alredy seen Cassandra and Vivienne. Out of, is it 9? Varric we know. That's far more than what I'd expect. Part of the intrigue and excitement of a new game is, or should be in my opinion, discovering it. Not plotting out the entire damn thing before you can even Pre-purchase it. I'll never understand people like that. You don't go through life with a list of all the people you will meet and interact with, so why would you for an RPG?

Personally, I would just like a bit of the plot. What is it, we are doing and a bit of the motivation as to why. I don't need to know where I am going and who is going with me, I'll learn all that as I play.

I feel bad for the development team, the pressure to gimme, gimme gimme all the info has to be aggravating. Granted, a few details here and there wouldn't hurt, but it should be more often than we've seen. Keep it simple. The hat! The hat was awesome. Every couple weeks, maybe a screenshot or something that doesn't reveal too much.

^ Totally agree.
I mean, different people want different things, so I just wish Bioware would adopt a slightly better advertising system. Like Jimmy said, one way would be to warn beforehand your fans if what they're about to hear is gameplay or companion/story related.
I dunno, but it'd help knowing whether gameplay info and mechanics are coming first and LIs and that sort of stuff second, that way I would know when I can leave the internet and start living in a cave.

I do agree, that marketing should have spoiler warnings, so those people that don't want to be spoiled can stay away from the info (maybe here on the the BSN, different threads for the type of info they are releasing?)

I'm one of those people who can't handle the suspense of a suprize. So spoil me rotten. It just gets me more excited about what I'm getting into, and doesn't at all take away from my exceitement or enjoyment when I finally get my grubby little hands on whatever. But I know that's not everyone.

It also depends how you see a spoiler. If it's about companions...I'd like to know their names and face/look so I won't miss anyone during my game. I don't want to know their life story before the release etc.The last one I consider as a spoiler. I want to get to know them when I'll play the game.

But I agree that marketing should have spoiler warning. That's very important to many people.

Origins, ME2, DA2 and ME3 showed off just about every potential companion well before release so expect the same for Inquisition. BioWare is known for their interesting companions and it's a useful tool in their marketing toolbelt. I'm betting they reveal at least 7 of the companions before release+the inevitable DLC companion.

Well, if you count the group of people standing around the Inquisition table...

Image IPB

You've got Cassanda, Varric and Viviene (and, we would likely assume, the Inquisitor in the middle). You've got the shaved head elf, who appears in other areas and is speculated to be a Magister, such as the below picture...

Image IPB

And then you've got the chick elf (rumored to be named Sera), and our grizzled vet/possible Grey Warden character.

And, of course, there's Iron Bull. Who is pretty much a lock based on the virtue that he's appeared in about half a dozen concept art pictures online and in The World of Thedas.

So that's 7 right there. I know if I encounter a shaved head elf who can use magic, he's going to be a companion. I know if I come across a crazy, goofy, wild elf chick, she's going to be a companion. And if I come across a grizzled vet with a beard, he's going to be a companion. In addtion to Iron Bull, Varric, Cassandra and Viviene.

That's with a year left before release. And, if we include the three other characters around the war table that we don't know, that's 10. 9 + the DLC companion...?

That's a lot of effort to go to on their part - would the number of fans who care deeply about avoiding spoilers be worth the trouble? I also doubt they'd just release their marketing schedule, as that does ruin the suspense somewhat.

Warning fans might be a nice thing to do, but... surely the focus of the marketing team is 100% on doing everything they can to get news of the game out to people who don't know about it, or who aren't convinced about buying it, not catering to the group of fans who are already deeply invested in the series and will buy it on day one.

I'm sympathetic to people who want to avoid spoilers, I just think it's slightly unrealistic to expect them to start every trailer or blog post with "this contains spoilers about companions, look away now" instead of "HEY EVERYONE HOW COOL IS DRAGON AGE WATCH THIS NOW BUY OUR GAME PLZ".

David Gaider :

"No talking animals. This is one of the underlying rules for the Dragon Age universe, and it includes dragons. Closest we've come to breaking that rule is the desire demon illusion in the Shale adventure (which was technically a talking cat), but it's never going to be a thing otherwise.

So, yes, all dragons must be monsters".

I agree, but I managed to go into DA2 with knowing a lot about the setting (not the plot) and the mechanics changes, but only knowing that you would have a sibling (no Bethany or Carver, specifically... but given that you start the game out with both and can't NOT recruit them, its hardly a spoiler) and Isabella, simply because she was in the trailer (and someone specifically told me it was Isabella... you can imagine me not naturally assuming that given her... changes... between DA:O to DA2).

And the same goes for all the ME games. I only heard about Jahvik coming back for ME3 because of all the rumblings in other parts of the internet that Bioware would put a Prothean as the D1DLC character.

I'm just saying... I've become a seasoned vet at avoiding the info I don't like. And, yet, I feel like I've already been spoiled a LOT on DA:I. Maybe that's because it was slated for a long while as coming out in 2013... I don't know.

Not a lock. It would amuse Gaider to trick us, I feel sure of that.It fits his mercurial nature.

The magister, presumed to be Dorian, needed if we go to Tevinter, the Grey Warden, needed as some of the wardens have been corrupted,Sera, maybe needed because the fans didn't like Tallis, rotfl. I do think it would be Tallis if the fans had liked her.Just my opinion. And the others, some of whom we know, some we don't.Gaider has said they've changed their opinion from time to time about companions,So who knows.

Vivienne is not in that pic and Gaider said that most of those characters are NOT companions a while back (it's in the companion speculation thread, I don't feel like searching for his quote).

How much do we really KNOW, though? Varric, Cassandra and Vivienne as companions. Despite hints and leaked surveys and other things, all we really have about the others is pure speculation.

We know about the Veil tears and that repairing them is our primary task, and we know that they were caused by...someone. We also know we were there when they opened for the first time.

We know health won't restore after an encounter and that enemies don't level. We know we go to Ferelden and Orlais. We know Morrigan plays some role.

I just don't feel like we know much of anything yet. Which is fine. I know what is coming when the portal opens above New York in the Avengers. That does not diminish my enjoyment of experiencing it...yet again.

Fair enough for what you said about the above pic... but Viviene is confirmed (even if she wasn't in that picture). And the other pic certainly seems like companion-esque behavior with everyone being chummy (three are there besides Cassandra, which gives us six, plus Iron Bull). And the writers DID talk about how those characters had their own writer (which is how companions work - other NPCs are written as part of questlines, like someone writing most of the Anvil of the Void questline and characters, while, for instance, Gaider wrote Morrigan).

People are right that this is all speculation... but again, I've never felt like the speculation told me the companions in half a dozen prior games, but I feel like they have now. Usually because things like this don't start getting throw around until after I've gone dark.
