However, coming across Arlathan, or sum part of Arlathan, may have an even more profound affect on a default city elf. The ones really cut off from their culture and history.

It's mostly because of something Bioware said at a panel a while back. Somebody asked if we could play a Dalish mage in Inquisition. They said yes.
All that coupled with what we currently know about the whole race/class thing leads us to the conclusion that if you pick the option to play as an elf and then choose mage, that Inquisitor is a Dalish mage. Which might also mean we're a Keeper's First. Pretty cool if so.
Edit: Partially ninja'd

I listened to that recently. I thought that the speaker STARTED to say yes, and then backpedaled and said that 'Mage' might be a background that trumps race. I took this to mean that our options for elves might be dalish/city, but if we're a mage, our background is the same whether we're elf or human (basically, like Origins).

I just looked it up, and it's at about 38:00.
He says yes initially, but then he goes back and talks about mage being a different thing than just race.
it's rather ambiguous. I would LOVE to be wrong and be able to choose what type of elf my mage is (or, for that matter, whether I'm an apostate or circle mage), but I don't wanna get my hopes up.

What's stupid about going to Arlathan? The Inquisitor is on a quest to uncover clues and lost magics to repair the tears in the veil. The ancient Elves were so magically gifted they were immortal.

As I see it, the elf PC will have two backgrounds based on the class: dalish (mage) and city (non mage). The same for human and qunari.

Hm, I'd find it helpful if they did a blog post or something outlining all the potential player characters at some point - clarifying how class/race combinations work would go a long way to answering some of the frequently-asked questions (like the dalish elf one).hhh89 wrote...

Edit: poor word choice - I know 'backgrounds' aren't a thing any more. But it'd be great to know what sort of human a human warrior is, and if that's different to a human mage, etc.

It seems like there might already be two elves in the party ("Sera" and bald-mage-elf-dude); if both of those characters end up being in the final game as companions, an Arlathan elf on top of that seems unlikely.
(Though it'd be hilarious if the ancient elf was in a Day 1 DLC pack called 'From Dust', just quietly.)

Seems silly that the inquisitor could find the ancient city of Arlathan when it's been lost for centuries & had been thought to be buried literally by Tevinter

It's possible, but I think that would pretty drastically change the dynamic of the story and companion (if we're talking about an ancient elf returning to the modern world, instead of a Tevinter outcast working to undermine their corrupt homeland),hhh89 wrote...

Keeping in mind that companions serve as narrative hooks (and it's a pretty important function, it looks like) I can only really see that making sense if the Tevinter story was scrapped or reduced, and if someone felt that it was necessary to boost the Arlathan bit(s). The last bit of art they showed looked to be in Nevarra or the very southern part of Tevinter, so the game still looks like it has a wide scope.
It's also possible that Dorian was scrapped and replaced by someone else entirely, or whatever. It's a big assumption to look for an Arlathan elf companion based on one screenshot
(Though out of the four characters mentioned in the survey, it's only Dorian who we haven't seen yet with 100% confidence - both Sera and the Iron Bull are in recent concept art, and Cole was already in Asunder)

@andar91: I don't think so, because Bioware said we'll not be able to choose our background. It'd be automatically assigned to the character based on the race and a class choices. Having two backgrounds for non-mages elves would mean we get to choose it.

A dalish Qunari? That would be amusing... I can already see them frolicking in the woods...
EDIT: or maybe not in the woods, the trees get jealous, you know.

@ElitePinocone: I don't think there are high chances that 'Dorian' was transformed into an ancient elf. It's just a theory that I thought at the moment. But the info about the scrapped character suggested a really major change, and I don't think that a change of race (in the case of Dorian). would be enough to be a complete change.

Having both the enthusiasm of a kid whenever experiencing new things but also wisened and tired of the same old mistakes civilizations around him keep making that leads them to their downfall.
I'd like to see that kind of character in the game.

believe is Dorian while most people called him "Trident Guy", that same
character appeared again in the War Room concept art alongside the bald
elf so they are definitely different characters.

"The ultimate hope for a concept artist is for the final in-game art to surpass its concept art. That has definitely the case with this image. Come Inquisition’s release, I think everyone will agree that the in-game version makes this image look restrained and quaint."

Geometry was ok.Wish I could have taken calculus.Always wanted to learn differential equations.
We've assumed there are limits to the area we will visit in DAI.
Players assumed we wouldn't be going to Tevinter , some still say we're not going there although Darrah mentioned it in his interview with Adam Sessler.
I don't know where Arlathan was suppose to be located.Anyone have an idea relative to the known maps Bioware has shown ?

Calculus is nicer. But differential geometry covers both subjects and is almost always concerned with non-euclydean spaces like spheric, saddle-like or folding geometries.
The concept art doesn't necessarily point towards the player going in eastern Tevinter. I'm sure that elven ruins can be found in Orlais. Perhaps some of them are still connected to the ruinded capital through eluvians.
