In the PAX panel about the race Bioware confirmed we can play as a dalish mage.andar91 wrote...
People keep saying they want to play a dalish elf, but I'm not sure that that's an option, is it? We know we can play an elf, but it might be a default city elf.
I listened to that recently. I thought that the speaker STARTED to say yes, and then backpedaled and said that 'Mage' might be a background that trumps race. I took this to mean that our options for elves might be dalish/city, but if we're a mage, our background is the same whether we're elf or human (basically, like Origins).

I just looked it up, and it's at about 38:00.
He says yes initially, but then he goes back and talks about mage being a different thing than just race.
it's rather ambiguous. I would LOVE to be wrong and be able to choose what type of elf my mage is (or, for that matter, whether I'm an apostate or circle mage), but I don't wanna get my hopes up.
Maybe our "origin" is determined by what race/class combination we choose? For example, a Human Mage may be from some Circle (perhaps Tevinter), while an Elven Mage may be a Dalish First to their Clan's Keeper. This could extend to warriors and rogues too. An Elven Rogue could be from Antiva, while an Elven Warrior may be from Ferelden. Given the races we can choose from, a Qunari Warrior or Rogue could be Par Vollen, but a Qunari Mage would likely have to be Tal Vashoth.
