[Regarding the release of the Dev Diaries] could you please elaborate on "Soon"?
Aaryn Flynn @AarynFlynn:
Sometime in February. We want to make sure we get the work done and done well.
- Cool! Well, we now have at least some idea when we'll see them.

This month then? Awesome! But wouldn't be surprised if they released them early March.

I think if he's willing to give a timeframe, they must be pretty confident at this point. Mind you, there are 5 and they are going to stagger their releases, so I could see them spread out into March...TristanHawke wrote...

I wonder what the topics of each 5 will be... Curious, have they released that info yet?

Can you reveal what the topics for each dev diary will be about?
Aaryn Flynn @AarynFlynn:
Sorry I can't. We recorded many segments and will edit them.

Sprint Reviews still happen, though it's less of a full day event now. Usually it's just an hour long or so, with the whole team getting together to check out some videos each department has made up to see how things are progressing.

Mike Laidlaw and Matt Goldman are both team leads (of Design and Art, there's also a Lead Programmer), who are one rung above a sub-team lead like David Gaider, but below Mark Darrah who is Executive Producer of the entire project. Aaryn is the studio head for Edmonton and Montreal, and above Aaryn is Matthew Bromberg, who leads all of Bioware's studios. Then I guess it'd be the EA Labels people.Hrungr wrote...

Like the second blog since I'm always curious how the industry works and I always raise an eyebrow when someone mentions how Dragon Age is Gaider's story. That does make me curious how the overall plot and other areas are established though, who (or who all) comes up with it, and how that all is decided.

So that leads me to ask...who exactly is responsible for creating the 'world' of Dragon Age? I know many people have put work into it over time, but originally. Who thought of Dragon Age and pitched it to become a franchise for Bioware? Darrah? Laidlaw? Someone else?
In my mind I always thought Mark Darrah created the series but David Gaider created a **** ton of the lore. I'm likely mistaken, but I would love to find out.
Also in my head, how involved is Aaron Flynn in development? At all? Or does he just overlook it? He always seems to know a lot about the project, and as GM I suppose he would. Just not 100% sure what a GM does.

As for Aaryn Flynn, I think due to his position he does a lot of the higher-level admin stuff, as well as liaising with EA. He's basically overseeing three IPs at once (DA, ME and the new one) so I don't think he's too heavily involved in the day to day development.

The post mentions that Gaider was Lead Writer from the beginning (but not the Lead Designer), so I think that might mean the actual concept of a new fantasy IP was developed higher up the food chain then handed down to be fleshed out by the writers. I'm not sure who the Lead Designer was back in 2003, but I don't think it was the case that David actually got to pitch an idea. Could be completely wrong though.
(And since this was ten or eleven years ago, Bioware was much smaller and the Doctors were still heavily involved - for all we know they were the ones that came up with the initial concept. Maybe?)

Oh, it was in David Gaider's On Narrative Design series of blog posts. The first three or four use some examples of when Bioware sat down to make Dragon Age: Origins.

Right, I hadn't even thought about them. It's funny how long ago DAO was conceptualized, compared to when it came out. It seems likely that the idea was perhaps from one of the doctors and they assembled the 'Dragon Age Team' to make it come to life.
I'll check out the blog posts in a bit, thanks for the reply Pinecone!

Maybe we should start calling it the Sprint Review Hour.

Interesting reply.
Wasn't there a mod for DA2 that made Isabela white? That's a bit depressing.Mod communities of the game-o-sphere! Pay attention: THIS is the direction to go! I keep tabs on mods (both of our games and others) to get a better perspective on gamers and their tastes. Over the years I’ve come to see the majority of character ‘modders’ as child-pageant moms, sandblasting edges and globbing makeup on carefully crafted characters in the pursuit of ‘pretty’. This sculpt of Fenris represents the right direction to go because it has life, it recognizes the spirit of the character, it makes a statement about who he is. It surprised me and challenged me and I LIKE to feel that way.

Some of that concept art reminds me of a mix between the recent Quanri designs we've seen and a dash of native american.discosuperfly wrote...

I can't say I particularly like this concept redesign, I'm not sure it says "Tevinter" to me, but it is taking it in a new direction.

I mean, artists who have spent time and effort shaping a vision for a character might feel frustrated if people modify them in ways that lose touch with how they first perceived them. Particularly if the modifications aren't an earnest re-appraisal of a character, but changing their skin tone or making them look more conventionally attractive.
(David Gaider has said something similar about reading fanfiction - the natural instinct is to abhor other people using your characters, but he takes a pretty nuanced approach.)
