I haven't been able to find anything in writing so perhaps it was in one of the podcasts or panels they've done over the last few years.
But.. yeah. Not having Alistair in the game seems bizarre - he's far more relevant to DA:I's tales of geopolitics and intrigue than Hawke's journey in DA2. Something seems very fishy,

It's weird though, because some dusty corner of my brain distinctly remembers a Bioware dev suggestively hinting that we'd be meeting with the rulers of various countries, and that the experience would naturally differ depending on who was on the throne.

He could just be a minor role with less lines so they'll be calling him in later.
It seems they're just starting with Morrigan and Varric who are supposedly major characters(Varric is a companion after all), so maybe the less important characters are being recorded later on?
I'm not development savvy but I would think they do recording after the characters scenes are set in stone.

I remember hearing a a few things along those lines aswell but atm all I remember is that someone asked them if Alistair is king or other rulers will they take action against an inquisitor who just just conquerrs places that are under their protection in their territories which they said yes our actions will reach the ruler and have consequences.
They've also said we'll be going to different nations and seeing their cultures and it would make sense for us to have to talk to the various rulers to establish a foothold, they've also said a lot of the events take place there ( Fereldan) and then Darrah's statement, which makes me think there's something fishy going on aswell.

i thought one of the tweets here said that alistair wouldn't be controllable, but he'd be in the game
They did say something along those lines a few days ago or at least hinted at him not being a party member, so either they haven't contacted him yet, they're using another voice actor, or he's messing with us. Guess we'll find out soon.
@BioMarkDarrah will Alistair be a party member in DAI?
If not we'll he make an appearance in the game?11:42pm - 3 Feb 14
@TaylorW15000 not a party member. You'll have to wait and see on the rest.10:51am - 4 Feb 14

Claudia Black and Brian Bloom did not start recording lines until a few days ago and their characters are important , hell Varric is a companion! They will probably call Steve Valentine later in development.
But Varric had spoken lines in the Pax Demo. Unless they got him in earlier just to record those?

They never said that it was the first time in the studio though. I heard Gaider talking about Kate Mulgrew recording Flemeth early last year, and Claudia as well.

Well crap. But then again the game was delayed a year so they might have stopped recording lines until now.eluvianix wrote...

Compare that to Bloom and Black who are in a bunch of games. I bet Valentine's schedule for a couple of lines, not a whole game like Origins, won't be needed super early on.

As you probably know, it doesn't really boil down to technical specifications but interest trends. Every so often I find myself reminding my local friends that our mutual interest in the concept of meeting up somewhere and sharing a few beers over multiple controllers and a single massive screen to accommodate them is a relatively waning one. This past console generation really drove online multiplayer into the limelight more than anything else and while I have nothing against people enjoying that it's a byproduct that my vastly preferred experience takes the hit.
I think your concern re: Nintendo is well-founded, but honestly, I think if any company can try to "modernize" its approach to online functionality withot sacrificing the timeless communal element of our personal preferences, it's them. And they have more than enough in those coffers to weather the storm that is the Wii U in the meantime.
Now it appears I've run off-topic quite a bit. What can I do to steer this ship back on-course? Post a tweet? Alas, doing so from an out-of-date phone is a hassle. Let's just entertain the notion I'm on-topic and go forward from here.
Yeah, not only has this gen pushed online multiplayer more, but the lack of split-screen/co-op is also a buisness decision.
1 game copy with 4 people playing split-screen and 1 online subscription = 120$
4 game copies with 4 people playing online and 4 online subscriptions = 480$
The reliability and internet improvements have made this change possible. While I love split-screen and always appreciated the good old days on the PS2 and Xbox, the numbers speak for themselves:(

Or they may have changed things requiring them to have to call in the voice actors again to record new lines.

I think it's mostly for the playable races, as a lot of race-specific dialogue has probably been added.

Speaking of which, I'm SUPER curious to if Bioware is actually going to provide seperate voice actors for each 4 races as well as male and female versions. I hope that's the case, and if it's true I'd be very, very impressed with Bioware.

I believe Darrah or Laidlaw tweeted something to that effect earlier.

That's not going to happen. Way too much money and work to have eight different voice actors to record line for every line of dialogue the inquisitor can say in the game.Enad wrote...

I'm not expecting it but I'd be very happily surprised if it does happen!
Voice Acting doesn't always have to be super expensive. Go with lesser known names and it wont bleed them dry.
Telltale games uses a bunch of smaller people who are all exceptionally talented, they're cheaper for the company but don't make the game feel any bit inferior.
But yeah I'm assuming they'll go silent protagonist route or just have one voice for all(Since we did already see a voiced protagonist in that demo video).

@Stevevalentine "4 all u #dragonage fans sorry to report no Alistair in upcoming games, at least they haven't asked yet. We had fun tho right? Sniff sniff..."
I thought Alistair would be a lock for certain, even if his role was fairly minor. And if Steve hasn't heard about doing VO work at this point (for scheduling purposes), I'd be surprised if they'd just spring it on him now.
Hmmm. I wonder if that means he'll get "taken off the board" in The Masked Empire? Or will he "mysteriously disappear" like the Warden and Hawke? Or... something else?

Didn't David Gaider mention that they had to completely rewrite a major plot just before New Year? That would surely influence many conversations.
And even if they don't need Steve Valentine right NOW I'm sure they would at least make him aware that they want to record Alistair sometime this year, which makes me think it's very likely Alistair won't be in DAI.

I'd like to thank the DAI writers for inviting me to speak at their all-day Transformers lecture series, held while @davidgaider was absent.
David Gaider@davidgaider: @Mike_Laidlaw Well it's good to know my sick day brought such joy to my colleagues.

I completely agree with this. Ferelden is a major part of the game, and if we r meeting with important people, isn't he one of the most important people in ferelden?
