Why Cole?

Gaider is adamantly opposed to Cole-as-love-interest (for really good reasons, I think), and that will likely not be respected. Over and over again, in probably weird and troubling ways. Which is why he might be talking about Cole.

Why Cole?

I think it's because Gaider has stated that Cole has, effectively, the mind of a child.  But there are fans out there who want to romance him anyway.

So having Cole as an LI is wrong behind he has the mind of a child. That makes sense. But having someone with the mind of child fight and kill people alongside us is perfectly fine? 

 

Assuming he is talking about Cole, obviously. I'm still not convinced Cole will be a companion in Inquisition.

David invented Cole for Asunder, and he's talked before about how he felt he could empathise with the character. 

Also, when people were discussing Cole as a possible love interest, David (understandably) pointed out that it's really quite creepy and exploitative.

What does that matter? Physically, Cole is an adult. Mentally, he is not. He does not understand sex, much as a child would not, and this is explicitly stated in the book.

Yeah, one should not really equate naiveté (or whatever other personality characteristics you consider immature) with Cole. It's explicitly stated that Cole sees people in the tower having sex, and doesn't understand it--there's no concept of arousal, not to mention the social under-development he otherwise displays.

If that doesn't impact you, and you really think you could "teach" him to understand these things... ummm, okay. Shine on, you crazy diamonds.

I'd want to ignore all the Cole fanfiction too - because inevitably it will get sexual, and that would be really weird if David specifically wrote him as not comprehending (or wanting to participate in) that kind of human behaviour.

David keeps dropping big hints everywhere (like that fanfiction reference today), and Cole was mentioned way back in the survey that came out in September 2012. He even had a companion bio and little story hook mapped out, and I don't think he's the sort of character that they'd cut lightly. 

Plus, if they need a companion to link in to the demon/spirit/Fade tear storyline, the enigma of what Cole actually is is a good way to make that bit of lore real and concrete for the player. Companions are chosen partly because they link back into the major themes of the story, after all.

I'm mostly not sure because he'd be a pain to write into the story well. He was invisible to most people, after all. I think Gaider could probably pull it off, but it raises a lot of questions.

And like I said above, the moral implications of a child-minded charcter fighting and being beaten up by enemies alongside us are questionable. If he is a companion it would have to be handled delicately.

True, but Cole fought alongside Rhys and Evangeline in Asunder, and there was that whole murder spree. 

David would obviously know best, but I got the sense that Cole is child-like in the sense of being socially underdeveloped (as a byproduct of the invisibility) and clueless about human behaviour (because he's a spirit thing?) - not literally with the mental capacity of a child. 

It's all about presentation, and I'm happy to agree that it would be pretty disturbing to lead someone into battle if they genuinely were shown to act and behave like a kid.

(Though - didn't Jade Empire have that possessed girl as a companion? Or did she disappear when the demon inside of her attacked people?)
