Mary Kirby@BioMaryKirby: Added to the list of follower foods: Chili dog, Tequila + Skittles, and Scotch Bonnet candy.

John Epler@eplerjc: @BioMaryKirby Like.. do we put the Skittles in the Tequila? I've got a couple of days off, and I'm always open to Science.

Mary Kirby@BioMaryKirby: @eplerjc No, no. Handful of Skittles. Followed by a swig of Tequila. Luke was very specific about this dish.

John Epler@eplerjc: @BioMaryKirby Oh. Well, I'm going to put some Skittles in Tequila anyways. It seems like a good idea.

May not be able to answer this, How many companions do you guys have written out and have a visual look for them?

Mike Laidlaw ‏@Mike_Laidlaw:
They're all written. Most have a few lingering things to finish. All of them have their appearances.

They can't.  If anything, abilities are going to become more exclusive and diverse looking at the leaked abilities sheet that one time like Cassandra knocking down the gate.

Thanks, it makes sense.

Tequila and skittles sounds like the she-elf making that fisting gesture in the Tavern concept.

Oh my goodness, YES! I'm just wondering who tfhe deceptive wax fruit and giant rump roast are.

The Iron Bull is giant, and has horns, and he's kind of an ox... so giant rump roast?

Now we have coffee grounds to read fortune

1) bananas foster - Varric
2) shortbread - Cassandra
3) ortolan bunting - Cullen
4) strawberry parfait - French. It cna we Vivienne or that Spear man who looks like 100% of chevalier.
5) surprise meatballs - Grey Warden?
6) chili dog - Sera
7) Tequilla + Skittles - I have connection with Merill. Dorian I think
8. Scotch Bonnet Candy - I don't know what is it? Candie with wisky?
9) deceptive wax fruit - Vivienne
10) giant rump roast - Iron Bull

your turn, guys.

"Surprise" meatballs? What are "surprise" meatballs if not just meatballs? This sounds like a weird reference to Bioware's first transgender.

Tequilla+Skittles seems like Sera, the giant rump roast I'd say is probably Iron Bull, I think wax fruit may be Cassandra since she may look appealing but she's not there for... eating...? Fruit smoothies...? Auugh

EDIT: Actually I think the roast is Cass, because I get the impression IB is gonna be rather a playful oddball to play against qunari stereotype. So maybe IB is the tequilla+skittles because IT SATISFIES A DEMAND OF THE QUN TAL'VASHOTH

@Ladyofpayne Scotch bonnet is a type of very spicy chilli pepper if that helps.

@Karsciyin: surprise meatballs are meatballs with cheese or something in the centre.

I think the Scotch Bonnet candy might be Cassandra. She seems to have a fiery temper, but is also kind of sweet.

Could the deceptive wax fruit be Dorian? Appearances can be deceiving (especially if you have a picture in your attic.)

If I had to guess, based on the companions that are rumored to be in the game:

Strawberry parfait: Vivienne
Giant rump roast: Cassandra
Surprise meatballs: Varric
Scotch bonnet candy: The tevinter magister guy
wax fruit: Iron bull
tequila + skittles: Elf girl
Bananas foster: Cullen
Ortolan bunting: Leliana? (the female rogue, not blonde elf)
Shortbread: Cole?
Chili Dog: Warden guy?

If I'm counting correctly, that looks like ten companions/foodstuffs.

The official site says 9 companions. Perhaps one is the Inquisitor.

Could be, although I have a hard time imagining how the avatar of the player that will most likely have a wide array of choices that will form their personality could be compared to a certain dish. Unless of course the devs have some sort of dev-cannon inquisitor, which would make sense.

I'm not assuming that any of the characters I used in my comparison will be in the game until they are confirmed, I only used them since these are the characters that we've heard of.

Also, to the guy who says that Iron Bull is more of a rump roast than Cassandra: No way.
(I could be persuaded to switch Iron Bull with Cole, though)

Poor Cullen, getting stuck with Ortolan bunting. I think he's Surprise Meatballs, myself. Because, SURPRISE! He's in the game, and he's a companion! (I hope.)
Vivienne I see as Ortolan bunting. If you don't know what it is, look it up.
Varric is shortbread. He's short, and densely built, like shortbread.
Strawberry Parfait I see as Cassandra. She's got layers, man.
Bananas Foster is the Grey Warden guy. Don't ask me why, he just is.
Tequila and skittles is Sera for sure. I'm surprised they didn't say she was jello shots.
Giant Rump roast is Iron Bull. I don't see how that could be taken for any other character.
Wax Fruit is Cole. He looks real, but he's not.
Scotch Bonnet Candy...I have no idea. Someone we don't know about, yet.
Chili dog seems like the Elvish guy. He's tall and skinny, like a wiener. And he gives you indigestion.

Varric is obviously martini (shaken, not stirred.)
Iron Bull would be roast Ronnie Coleman
And Cassandra is an onion.

I agree with Chanda on everything she said except I think Cullen is the Scotch Bonnet Candy cuz they're spicey, right? ;)  The chili dog is Cole cuz if he's there I'll have indigestion, lol.  Wax fruit for the mage elf guy...not sure why.

It's crazy how listing some food can spark so much speculation. We don't even know any of these people you all speak of will be companions, that survey was from 2012. Things may have changed.

Mages? Able to PICK locks?

Well, that's just crazy - everyone knows that in the DA universe, unless you kill things with a bow or dual daggers, you are physically incapable of holding and manipulating a lockpick. I mean... that's science.

Joking aside, there has been some semi-confirmed rumors of a set of "Exploration skills" which are non-combat skills each class has to let them do various actions. This could in life a magical means of opening (some) locked doors/chests.

That would ruin one of the main factors of having a Rogue in your party.
Rogues are good and all but at least in DAO, you could likely do without one but because there were so many chests with valuable stuff in them, you didn't want to miss out. DA2...not really the same case.

But if a rogue wasn't the exclusive chest opener, then why wouldn't I want to bring say...3 mages in my party and 1 sword+shield warrior(1 of them being the PC)? Make that warrior the ultimate tank then have your 3 mages rain down complete destruction. Seems a lot better than have some puny arrow shooter :P

I'm just going to slip in here and leave this

Ortolan Bunting: Vivienne
Skittle + Tequila/Wax Fruit: Sera
Strawberry Parfait: Female Character
Scotch Candy: Cassandra
Meatballs: Varric
Rump Roast: Iron Bull
Chili Dog: Warden
Shortbread: Bald Elf
Bananas Foster: Dorian (his color palette from the concept art even looks like Bananas Foster)

I can see Cole being a DLC/temp companion though so maybe he’s the deceptive wax fruit (looks innocent, but kind of kills people)
I also made the list so there are 4 female and 5 males. I also can see 3 mages, 3 rogues, and 3 warriors from it and 5 humans, 4 non humans!)

Except in DA:O, a "puny arrow shooter" could have one of the highest DPS as well as one the highest damage dealing abilities (arrow of slaying).

And you balance it by giving everyone more abilities. For instance, I could have my Mage invest some points in an "Unlock" spell, but maybe that only opens simple locks and means I'll have to forgoe a more useful Mage Exploration skill, like Divination or Enchantment Repair. Or maybe it let's you open a chest from far away, completely avoiding the risk of a trap... but could run the risk of damaging the durability/value of the item inside. And so on.

Similarly, if the rogue has lots of other abilities, like scouting ahead of battle to get a big bonus to fights or pick pocketing an item from an otherwise deadly foe. Heck, you could even want two characters with overlapping skills, such that you could send your rogue to scour ahead and, in the meantime, have your Mage cast an Unlock spell on a nearby chest.

DA:O's non-combat skills were mostly per-functionary. You had Lock Pick and Persuade, then a whole host of other skills that you really only needed one character in the entire party to master to complete 99% of the content related to it.

And it could even be context sensitive. In an open field, it would make more sense for a rogue to scout ahead and have the warrior and Mage fortify the battle area, while in a cave, it may make more sense for a Mage to magically see the way ahead and a rogue to stay back and set up choke points and collapsing boulder traps, since it is more of a contained area.

The problem with previous DA non-combat skills is that there was one best-practices approach to building your companions in terms of their non-combat skills, with everything else being sub-par, let alone being actually useful. If you have lots of different class-specific abilities, you can have some redundancies in those abilities, especially if they offer subtle nuances between classes.

It sounds like classes will play a role in exploration and environmental unlocks in DAI, so picking locks and their usefulness in combat won't be the only reasons to bring someone along.

A poster on a wall in one of those Game Informer videos from last year had each class listed with a whole bunch of exploration skills, and the devs have mentioned things like mages raising bridges across chasms and stuff.

So three mages might be awesome for combat, but not if you want to get to a side area that requires a warrior or rogue's special exploration skill(s).
