It was a marketing survey, not an announcement. It was never meant to be made public, nor was it meant to be informative. It's purpose was finding out what to advertise, nothing more. No details like that were in the survey and swords are not new so I'm having a hard time understanding your point of view here...
You claim the man is not a mage which means that is not a staff he is holding but a spear or another new weapon for warriors and/or rogues, a marketing survey would have mentioned that to gauge consumer interests.

...that's a sheath.
A pike+sword combo don't really scream "mage" to me...
It still bothers me when people can't spell rogue right.
Not many BioWare characters are more disliked than Tallis. I would be very surprised if they made her a full-on companion.
No its not but lets assume for a moment that it is, you honestly think BioWare would reveal a new weapon skill tree for warriors and/or rogues in survey art and not mention it at all in the survey itself!
Well, it's certainly not a yin-yang talisman, since the concept of yin and yang is an Earth concept, and (currently) isn't reflected in Thedas. That said, given my artist background, I concur with BasilKarlo that it's a sword in a sheath. The white tuft looks a little off from this view, but the sword handle and main sheath are clear as day (to me).

DG: "Oh hey Mike! Having a good day?"
ML: " Sup. Good day so far. Trolled some fans on twitter and sat in on Cullen's VO session. Man I can't wait till he dies in the prologue. "
DG: "I saw a few people on the forums complained again about no new information, so you'll want to push it back again, for fun. I saw how you added that extra someday in there."
ML: *giggles*
DG: "Well I'm off to a writers meeting where we will pour over the forums laughing at all of the wrong assumptions and then post a bunch of random tweets to each other even though we are literally in the same room."
ML: "Have fun! I'm going to EA to request another extension so we can add multiplayer...a year should be good."

How about less off topic arguing, more happy fun times Twitter posting?
All I want is a game that ships with a cloth map and requires me to cross-reference coords to know where I am. Is that so wrong? #OldSchool
Wouldn't that be cool? When I was a preteen I was obsessed with plotting intricate LoTR-style stories. One of my favorite world building activities was to draw huge (and hugely detailed!) maps, then come up with backstory for everything with a Proper Noun Name. I've never been as obsessive about anything in my life since then. Being a kid was neat. A+, would do again.
DA:I extra special collector's edition should ship with a cloth map. :3

Not really.
I have a rough copy of the original survey, if you're interested. It was a marketing survey. They were interested in what people found visually appealing and conceptually exciting - the sort of things that would go into trailers, online ads, demonstrations and the blurb on the box. Many of the people taking the survey might never have played Dragon Age, ever. The questions were about broad sweeping gameplay features that people would find attractive, and different versions of plot summaries that were designed to grab your attention.
The survey had nothing specific, and it certainly had nothing to do with asking about new skill trees for warriors. It wasn't that sort of survey, at all.

Exactly, then why reveal art that shows a new weapon for warriors and rogues ? The answer is they wouldn't, that man is a mage holding a staff.

You're making so many baseless assumptions. Spears were already in DA][, they just weren't available to Hawke or any companions. Which brings up another of your assumptions: that he's a companion. His concept art was in the survey and he's been seen in one other bit of concept with other people that are not companions. And why assume that a marketing survey would want to know what the general public thinks about adding spears to the game? That's not interesting unless you're already a huge fan of the franchise and the point of marketing it to attract new customers.
Because it's not a staff! He has a sword on his back and a pike in his hand. Magic staves are ornate. What he is holding is very un-ornate. In fact, it's downright pike-like.
You know we're getting way off-topic so I think it's best if we agree to disagree, who is right or wrong will be revealed in due time

I like to imagine DAI will have underwater combat and that's why we have tridents. Because that's no King Triton!

Right, because it turns out he was indoctrinated. Wait... What was the question again?

I don't see it. Also, none of those are Alistair. I agree with the person above me that one looks like Cullen, who could maybe be mistaken for Alistair... maybe.
EDIT: Ah, nevermind. I understand now. Thanks, Doom.

Shame there is no Wynne, Loghain, Velanna, or Kristoff-Justice. Anders too but he is in the DA2 one so it's fine.

Nevermind, I think the fourth from right to left is the Warden, since he seems to have human ears.
