So there is a strong possibility of visiting southern Tevinter. Cool
Solus and Perivantium are in range. Silent Plains are also included (the greatest battle in Thedas history, which ended the 1st Blight).

This makes a few of your posts I've seen elsewhere make more sense, I'll say that much.Commander Kurt wrote...

Lol! No, the concept of "girlish glee" is bigger than any one gender. It's a certain giddy feeling you get abt something way down inside.
@Weidz: Is that a confirmed area map for DA3, or just basing it on what has been said so far?

Ha! Guess I give off vibes that are part "all man" and part "gurly girl", which, come to think of it, doesn't really sound that attractive.
Sooo, maps. I know that the areas in-game are supposedly massive, but has it been confirmed that the world map will be this big?? It's huge. If that's the case, forget about horses; we'll need griffons...

As for the map sizes, there was a quote floating around that one particular "level" in DA3 was roughly equivalent to a fair chunk (or was it all?) of DA2's maps, though that doesn't really tell us what sort of level it is, or the content involved. A huge hub is quite different to a big open-world combat area, for example. I'm most interested by the potential for exploration, and hiding sidequests or other content in areas that actually require a bit of legwork to reach.

But, as for the topic at hand!
I know a lot of TRPGs track in-game time when you move between zones (Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, and a few other track days of the week and months, occasionally even year). I would love to see that affect something in game, but honestly, it never does (short of seasonal random battles).
The quote was that, "one of DA3's maps is equivalent in size to all of DA2's", IIRC. But that can also be taken a multitude of ways. I'm honestly hoping that, if it is a multi-nation game, they have an entire open-world setting for each nation, then divide them by ride-throughs. Kind of like Assassin's Creed 1. You could go to Ochre, and the entire city and surrounding areas were fully explorable. If you wanted to go to a different city, you went through a "travel hub", and wound up in the other nation, with a similar setup.
It could be fun for Dragon Age 3 to be like that. Have more explorable, but still have boundaries. We shall see, we shall see.

And how do you know the scope of DA3 anyway, or even of Exalted Marches, for that matter?

Please don't post hi-res images like that. 12mb is ridiculous for a forum post. If you REALLY need, post a smaller one and link to the hi-res.

It was part of a convention presentation a few months back, the same one where they talked about the companion armor customization concept for the first time.
The quote went along the lines of "DA:O took place in an area this size: (outline Ferelden). DA2 took place in an area this size: (outline the tiny size of Kirkwall, to the laughter of many). We're hoping with the next Dragon Age project, we can take the scope to HERE: (outline of all of the Free Marches, Ferelden, Orlais, Nerara... basically, the green circle you see above)."

Yeah, I'm scraping by...
I liked how it works in DA:O when you see the party snailing across the map. Instant travel between areas is practical for sure, but I find it lacks charm.

I think the idea is that, like in Origins and practically every other game ever, moving on the world map doesn't actually represent weeks or months of real-world travel. Having to accurately depict the passage of time and link it to the ongoing story sounds like a bit of a nightmare, really![]()

I know LOTS of RPG elitists who would love that, actually.
Yeah, that was the quote I was remembering. And I agree it makes a difference, but still. It sounds awesome, really, but I too really hope that all that space is put to good use and not just put in place because bigger is better.
Did I mention that it sounds awesome..? The possibilities, man, just think of the possibilities...

It might be a good idea to cut back on gigantic images, you're right.
For Exalted March, the devs were wearing T-shirts at some convention back in 2011 that had words with missing letters.
The words ended up speling out "Exalted March", "Est watch [the forum filter doesn't like this name]", "Starkhaven" and "Wildervale" - the last three are all locations near Kirkwall in the Free Marches, which makes sense for an expansion to DA2.
Mike (or it might've been Mark) has previously said that they're going to fold the plot of the expansion into DA3 in some respects, and the hints about DA3's scope do extend as far as the Free Marches.
(Now that I look back, the Starkhaven shirt also features Sebastian's Andrastre symbol, which might be more evidence in favour of that DA3 environment concept art being a Starkhaven/vael location instead of a different Chantry or Andrastrian one. Who knows.)

Yes, I saw these, and the one about wanting to clone himself so that he could work on all three at once! The enthusiasm we're seeing is fantastically encouraging.
I gather from another tweet that Mike Laidlaw is going to be at PAX East. Would that be too early for any sort of revelation?

Isn't PAX East usually in mid-April? If so, then that's perfect timing for some new DA3 news to be coming, considering that stuff is supposed to start coming when the World Of Thedas book releases in April.
<edit: oops, that PAX date is wrong...>
To my mind a large potential influence on DA3's reveal timeframe is whether or not it's a next-gen console game - which we don't really know yet.
If it is, then it's possible the details (and even things like screenshots or gameplay footage) are going to be tied into Microsoft's and Sony's own launch plans for their consoles, since it looks like there are all sorts of NDAs and embargos involved. Rumours point to a late March announcement date for those consoles, which could then allow BW to start talking about DA3 - if it is, indeed, a next-gen title. If DA3 is intended as a *launch* title for the consoles, then I'd guess the truncated marketing time (we're down to six or seven months between proper announcement and launch, if it's late March) would be compensated for by the free marketing that goes with a console launch's hype train. Maybe?
If it's not, then there's some other marketing strategy involved that's all in the hands of Bioware's/EA's (inscrutable) marketing teams. I've given up trying to work out what they'll do next, or indeed even why they're doing it.

Thanks for this-- I'd been looking for a map of Thedas where I could actually read the city/town names. Was having trouble finding a high enough resolution until now, so cheers mate.

PAX East is March 22-24 while GDC is March 25-29.
Would Bioware likely have a preference for announcing something at GDC instead of PAX East?
I am going to PAX East with my kids, and am hoping to have something to nerdgasm about related to DAI.
