I'm placing my bet now: The DLC companion is a female Qunari. It'll make everyone want to buy it!
(plus it'll help even out the companion gender ratio)

I'm personally hoping for a 4:5 ratio with women being the larger number.

Looking unlikely at this point. I don't think there are even enough free spots left that would make that possible. There are only three female companions we know about at the moment (Cassandra, Vivienne and the elf some call Sera), and the roster is pretty full up with characters we already know about (Varric, Iron Bull, the Grey Warden, the elf mage).
I'd be shocked if the ratio was 6 males to 3 females - maybe 4 with DLC? - but unless a whole lot of previously-hinted characters don't end up making it into the party, it's certainly a possibility.

I know I can hope though. But I don't think that all the characters shown in the survey would be companions though, if I was marketing I'd mix it up as to show important non-companions to get more overall feedback. So far six have been very strongly hinted or at the very least official, maybe even seven (if you include the blonde elf). But in regards to Iron Bull he's the only supposed companion that hasn't been shown in association with the Inquisition. He actually might be the Inquisitors rival in all of this same goal, different methods I'd suppose. But this is speculation like all things.

Wake up- 3 females were in DAO and DA2.

I honestly think it's almost impossible that there'll be 5 female companions in the vanilla game, considering the rumoured companions.

Yeah i'd be shocked at a 6-3 split. 5 -4 males to females is what i'd still be putting my money on.

Wake up- 3 females were in DAO and DA2.
Origins: 5 - 6 men (if you include Dog) against 3 - 4 women (if you include Shale)
Awakening: 3 - 4 men (if you include Justice) against 2 - 3 women (if you include Mhairi)
Golems of Amgaraak: 2 men against 0 women.
Witch Hunt: 1 - 2 men (if you include Dog) against 1 woman.
II: 3 - 5 men (if you include Carver and Sebastian) against 3 - 5 women (if you include Bethany and Tallis)

Da2 had 3 male companions in the vanilla game for the matter. It was a 3-3 ratio (4-4 with the sibling and 5-4 with the dlc). In DAO in the vanilla game you can't have more than 4 male companions at the time in the vanilla game.
I agree that not all the companions might not have been shown in the leak (Varric, Viviene and baldy weren't), but while the concept/videos shown other possible male companions, they didn't show a female one (the one in the war room appeared already in the leak, and the description in it seems to imply that she won't be one).I know I can hope though. But I don't think that all the characters shown in the survey would be companions though, if I was marketing I'd mix it up as to show important non-companions to get more overall feedback. It's still possible that there's one hidden female companion (and I agree that Iron Bull might not be one), but so far it seems more likely that there won't be one though (almost surely not two).

Yeah, it's been confirmed that several of them aren't - the lady holding the brush isn't a companion, and I suspect neither is Cullen. But those two only appeared in the art section, not the part that had text descriptions.
For the characters that got bios (Cole, Iron Bull, Sera and Dorian) the writing style really made me think someone had just written a short precis of a companion and their major plot arc. It has a brief outline of who they are and their major features (magister, elf, murderous spirit-thing) but more importantly concluded with what I'd call their 'companion story' - the character quests that develop their storylines like every other companion in DAO and DA2. Dorian is fighting corruption in Tevinter, Sera is stuck between elven and human culture in the underclass of a city, Cole has to decide what he'll do with his 'life', and the Iron Bull's history is catching up with him after ten years of partying and looting. They all sound like perfectly plausible companion arcs, and not really something that would work for NPC characters.

I would love a plot twist, where we get 5 females and 4 males. That would be extremely cool. I already gave my opinion on who will be the companions and it is sort of 6:3 for males, but i can totally make a list where the majority are women. Plus we know we gonna get Morrigan and Leliana and both will play significat role in the game. Judging from what the devs have showed us.

When did they confirm Scribe Girl wasn't a companion?

Gaider stated that she's not Vivienne, but he didn't say the she's not a companion. He stated though that some of the characters in the war room concept aren't companions, and i that concept we already have three companions (Cassandra, Varric and baldy) plus other four characters. Granted that Leliana won't be a companion (almost surely) there are other three left. I think at least two of them won't be companions. Though at this point is just speculation. When did they confirm Scribe Girl wasn't a companion?
Why do you think having 5 female companions would be a plot twist? It migh a twist, but it's not plot related.I would love a plot twist, where we get 5 females and 4 males. "Plot" referring to the game's development. We all think we know how this story goes, but then surprise! Women. Women everywhere.

Is this about the war room concept? Because I recall he only stated she isn't Vivienne.

You're right, I just went back and checked. I misremembered what David said there.
Still, I'm pretty certain the scribe (for lack of a better name for her) isn't a companion. The party roster is too full already, and several of those survey concept art characters weren't companions (which David *definitely* said). Two of them were actually Inquisitor variations.

I hope there are more than 3 ladies. Though I'm sure Vivienne has personality enough to count for two.

Spoilerwas going to be a companion. Perhaps it'll only be a cameo though, and I'm okay with that
I would be surprised if we don't see her in the game in some capacity, or as a companion in future installments. The fact that Wynne died, and gave up her spirit in order to save her is pretty damned impressive. You just don't throw away a character like that.
