Stage 1: Obfuscation
The writers begin dressing as their characters. Here we begin to observe the framework for situational confusion. Gone are the scribes, replaced with representations. The fans, bewildered, worship the ground their respective favorite characters walk on.
Stage 2: Replacement and Attempted Government Intervention
The fans eventually realize their real-life favorite characters won't write themselves and band together into small cells to masquerade as the now-"vanished" writers. They dress up as those writers and begin penning characters, but various cells compete for legitimacy. It turns violent. The government steps in, but shakes its collective head, snarks about "nerds" and decides to allow the factions to fight it out.
Stage 3: Realify Becomes Illusion
No single cell survives the ensuing conflict, known broadly as the Great Gaider-That's-Not What-Is-This-I-Don't-Even. The writers, shocked by the effect their self-inserted cosplay caused, vote Dean the sexier Supernatural lead. Although this action seems irrelevant to the subject at hand, that's OK, because really, it's Dean, guys.
