I'm starting to get the DA week submissions fill up my inbox, it's such a fun week, so many great/cool ideas. Hopefully we can show some of the non-DA3 specific ones at some point.

Or maybe even some of the DA3 specific ones?

I mean... after all, the game will be revealed at SOME point, right?

The big risk with showing off DA3 specific ones (even after the reveal) is that some people may think stuff like that is actually going into the game.

No risk no profit ....better to reach high and fail than to never reach at all...
I fell sorry for the man or company who fears to chase there dreams because of the possiblty to never catch them

What profit is there to show ideas that ultimately don't make it into the game?

The reason given was something about having 'new opportunities' (which I guess might've been the change to Frostbite), and focusing the entire team on DA3 from an early stage. Certainly they were a fair way into making Exalted March, so the business case for it must've been enough to initially justify all that work put into it.

(I'd love an in-depth explanation at some point, but I doubt we'll get one.)

We actually weren't too far into the expansion pack to be honest.  I was doing work on automatic playthrough bots but had to use DA2 to test it as there wasn't a lot of in game level content.

I know writing had done a bit of work (they are usually the ones most able to get started without as much dependencies on the rest of the team), but I certainly wasn't on the project for very long.

Might be neat to see some of these DA Week ideas after Dragon Age 3 is out. Sort of like how Bethesda had the video showing off their Skyrim Game Jam ideas after Skyrim had shipped. And coincidentally a good amount of those ideas ended up in the DLC thus far.

I think that this would be neat. I didn't realize Bethesda did something similar. I remember Double Fine made an event out of it for fans to take part in as well.

I ended up changing mine up somewhat (we recently had an integration from Frostbite code, which always sees some latent issues, so I ended up providing more support than "doing my own thing."), and started looking at telemetry to see if I could draw up some game design hypotheses that could be applicable for future games.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot more of the writing work was done, but the team as a whole was just starting to get ramped up, and there was a good amount of work on prototyping some game ideas that were being worked on, and so forth. Although too be fair, I suffered a severe concussion playing ball hockey in late April which saw me miss 2 weeks and be on half-days 2 weeks, so perhaps the timeline isn't as condensed as I thought.

There had already been a group of people doing prototypes of games with Frostbite before DA2XP was stopped. A lot of spitballing of various things we could attempt with the engine, as well as the likelihood of it being used for DA3. But yeah, we were all pretty much pulled off of DA2XP and put onto DA3. It's kind of interesting, because the early work was demoed to some people and I guess it left enough of an impression that it was decided to focus on that. For myself, I didn't mind the transition because I had some "ooOOOOoOOo New Technology!!!!" Some of the writing aspects and game design ideas are being carried over, although some stuff was lost. I imagine writers must have iron wills because from what it seems, due to the timing (they often get the most stuff done the earliest), they are the ones most likely to have to cut/alter content based on the way projects go.

Lack of teasing is currently because we had bug week, planning for the next milestone, DA Week, and canceled sprint review day (so we could spend more time doing all of those things). Next sprint starts on Monday so it's back to business as usual and you'll see more teasing. Especially next sprint review day.

What's bug week? :-S

Bugs are constantly filed, and worked on (if important enough) during the sprint, but generally the developers are working on features.  Bug week is a time we set aside for the team to stop feature development and work only on bugs.  This helps make the build more stable, reduces our tech debt, and allows for more iteration on content that's already created, it's a good thing :)

It was a DA week project by one of the dev's, the sticky says, "please don't touch me, i'm super fragile" Our facilities people are getting a glass box to put around it. It's really intricate and well done :)

And yes, it's the Qunari symbol.

They posted a blog about Dragon Age Week, opening it to the community. It also hints that they might show some of the Dev's stuff at the end of the week. Maybe something we can speculate about!!

I am better than Nolan, thanks for noticing (but it's close).

It's nice that you don't care about Frostbite 3. As mentioned, lets not get into another pissing match over which game someone does or does not like.

What I take from your comment: "Graphics do not concern me, Admiral." Noted.

Hmmm. I'm starting to feel a bit bad now....

Unless people had any idea what the reveal date would have been (I don't think they do....) it's easy for me to promise something that can't really be validated.

This all goes back to the fact that I'm an evil jerk!

This conversation should stop. If you think that someone is just trolling up the forums, please do not egg the conversation on more and take the thread further off topic.  Feel free to ignore them and go on your way.

If you have issues that people are being rude and disrespectful towards you, do not further compromise the thread by continuing to discuss it.  Feel free to ignore the posts you feel are there to agitate you, and if it's serious contact a moderator or developer such as myself.

On both sides, there's no need to call out one another and continuing to do so will only serve to make me angry and to send out my newly created army of soldier geese to ruin your days. Don't make me do that.

Thank you.

That would be a powerful ability for a Ranger to summon an animal like a goose.

You could even call Allan a... Power Ranger...?

All Canadians have this ability.

There are plans to update the forum. Though I don't know the timeline on any of that sort of stuff. I just know that online teams are looking to improve it.

That's a nonsensical argument. They've done presentations giving details about the game. They've posted on these forums giving us details on the game.

You're right, I have occasionally let out some of the details about some things that are being investigated, mostly because I try to qualify that they are often along the lines of being investigated and as such, are (hopefully) not seen as utter gospel about what is or is not definitively going to be a part of the game.

Now, if people really wish to rake us over the coals for not specifically adhering to the "show don't tell" policy, I will stop.

Given, Basil, you have repeatedly made posts about how you want MORE information and that you are getting very annoyed with the lack of information, and at one point even said you were leaving this forum until there was actual information, I think you're trying to actually say "It's okay to tell without showing, because you're already doing it!" In that you're hoping to illuminate to us that we needn't feel bound to our "show don't tell" ideal because we already haven't been, so on some level just open up the floodgates (even if just a crack).

Yes, there HAS been some stuff told (especially at the panels and the like), and especially in terms of things that are seen as controversial hot topics, especially on the boards. If you *really* think we should show a picture of an (unfinished) human character and say "This is the protagonist!" and a picture of the dialogue wheel to confirm that yes, in fact, we have the dialogue wheel, then I think you're living to the "letter of the law' a bit too specifically.

I (very occasionally) post vague DA3 tweets because I am under the impression that

a) I'm allowed to, and am not undermining any sort of marketing or project goals by doing so, so long as I exercise judgment in doing so.
B) There are a group of fans that enjoy it, even as they "lament" how they are agonizing for more information.

If you are not among the fans that enjoy the vagueness of our tweets and attempts to have some fun with the fanbase, I do encourage you to make proactive decisions that ultimately help minimize the level of frustration you experience in your life. DA3 will eventually be "fully revealed" with information flowing a lot more freely. So if you're finding these types of threads frustrating, as a human being I *do* encourage you to take a break and come back after that reveal, when there will be more active discussion about actual details of the game. There's no sense sticking around now, unless you're enjoying yourself in some capacity.

As a general post, if people are going to split hairs and attempt to coerce information out of us by any sort of, well, "aggressive" means (for lack of a better term) such as pointing out that we aren't really keeping true to our "show don't tell" philosophy, it is infinitely more likely that, at this time, it will result in even less information than is currently being shared now (which isn't much). And I use the term "infinitely" very specifically, because there is a zero percent chance of us suddenly deciding to be much more loose in terms of revealing DA3 information. The little tidbits of stuff that I personally have shared are things I *should not* have done, but did because in my judgment they are often small or stated in a way that is very non-committal. I am exceptionally worried about people grabbing on to something that I have said and treating it as gospel, and when I find my words being used in ways that I didn't anticipate or quoted, it serves as a reminder that "Maybe it might be safer for myself and my colleagues if I decided to just keep quiet in the short term."

In conclusion, we don't sit on DA3 information simply to torment our fans for our own amusement.

... well, there goes that theory.

He cannot speak for Gaider. I refuse to believe Mr. Gaider does not delight in our suffering. That's just not right.

Stating that our motivation for sitting on DA3 information is not to torment our fans, does not exclude us from still enjoying said torment!

It's more of a side benefit! :innocent:

It's more that we are stating the alternative.

The alternative, at this point, does not include "releasing more information."
