"Extremely conscious," replies Bioware chief Aaryn Flynn to the question of how conscious his studio is of the sometimes sharp criticism of Dragon Age 2."When we have internally set ourselves the question whether we still want to continue with the series after Dragon Age 2, the overwhelming opinion was: Oh yes, we want to, there are so many exciting stories and cool things in this world, but a few points we really need to improve. No. It's just listed at the side. There is no in text explanation. My guess would be that conversations and stuff like that might still be missing.
Yeah, I think it's a possibility.

Where one journalist goes, fifteen journalists tag along. This'll be a fun week, and an undoubtedly irritating one once the inevitable inconsistencies even between English articles begin to pop up.
And, though I'm sure they want to market the game extensively to a German audience (because apparently the number of DA fans in Germany is absolutely enormous), it's not as though they'd just invite that one magazine for a huge preview.
Kris Ligman definitely went along in Feb (she writes for Gamasutra and some other websites), and I'm sure there were others from the games press.
Whether they were all shown the same thing, though, is another question. The article from GameStar seems to suggest they had a sit-down chat with Aaryn Flynn and a small preview session.

Cons: so far companions appear shallow, how exciting will the building of the inquisition be?
That raises alarms.
Shallow, eh? I wonder what that's based off of.
Where I to make a guess, it's probably simply from combat dialog and small cut scenes during certain events. Doubt BW showed any real dialog discussions between the party members, otherwise it would--most likely--have been brought up in some capacity. So the journalist possibly judged on what little he saw and wasn't enough to impress him.
And so it is here you've been "hiding", Jeff. Glad to see you being active again, old friend. ![]()

That raises alarms.
I'd be seriously worried if a review of the finished game said the companions were shallow, but I'm not sure I trust an assessment of character quality made by someone who saw a short section of an unfinished version. I dare say Morrigan or Varric might seem pretty shallow if you'd only spent half an hour with them.

Glad that solas is not Dorian. I am now interested in what the Iron bull fears from his past. Expert on nothingness, is this because he no longer has any role in the Qun or was he always a vassoth. I have gained a new ally I think, I wonder and can't we to see how he reacts to my saarebas.
Only 4 remain if I can count correctly.

What I'm considering here is that it's been said the journalists were treated to a brief gameplay demo. While I'm sure BioWare would want to blend a healthy dose of as much as possible into that demo, it's entirely possible there just wasn't a whole heckuva lot going on with companions in this dungeon-esque location they were shown. If the journalist was anticipating DA2 levels of interaction then it's not surprising they might have written briefly on it. Or perhaps there's a con quota and they needed something. I dunno.
What I do know is that the journalist in question has posted in this very thread once, so maybe they'll offer some insight.
Personally, I'm not really going to be terribly irked if Origins-level interaction while on the field returns. So long as we're not looking at ME2 levels, I'm satisfied. We know the majority of big conversation bits will take place back at the headquarters (read: camp) this time, so yeah.

Frankly, they've received entirely too many accolades over recent games' handling of party member characterization to go back to ME1's relative shallowness (IMO, IMO) or ME2's absence of much meaningful input while on the field.

I just chose French as my language to learn for the remainder of my anthropology undergrad. Reasons involved lots of travel plans to Europe for fieldwork.
Should have chosen German. If I'd known they were such big Dragon Age nuts surely I would have.

It's Solas who is an expert on nothingness, and 'nothingness' is how The Fade is rendered in German.

A Bioware game with shallow companions? Yeah sure.
My guess, someone turned off a great deal of the banter in the coding for this build. Obviously resulting in shock, the only thing the journalist could use to described this shock and lack of banter was shallow companions.
I wouldn't make more of it, perhaps someone will turn on the party banter switch for the next preview.

That'd be... kinda odd. Wouldn't they want to showcase everything they can? But then, I suppose the banter could well have spoiled major stuff.

Ha, I lived in Germany for some time but never made an attempt to learn the language properly, and what I do know has faded over the years.
I really should have taken those language classes
