grits aren't as awful as people think they are, but if I had to choose between grits or hashbrowns, I'm always going to take up the hashbrowns.

Do you guys really eat those things?
Yes we do, dear. And they're damned good too.
Edit: Wait, what's so bad about them?

Well they don't look very appetising, no offense intended.

Huh. I never expected them to look like that. It is a bit off putting to me as well. But I eat Vegemite almost daily, so I'm all for loving your regional dietary quirks.

It's not the grits that are good, it' s what youput in with them. Salt ,pepper a little cream, honey is good.
Salt, pepper, lots of cheese.

Some things are just an aquired taste I guess. I didn't mind Vegemite when I could eat it.

It isn't that grits are bad, more that they are dimensionless and bland globs of what many would assume to be some sort of paste. Given enough seasonings/spices, you could probably make anything taste good, but your heart's likely to explode by age 60. ![]()
As far as Southern (US) dishes go, I prefer jambalaya myself. It's one of my signature dishes as an amateur family chef. I also make a mean grilled cheese sandwich. And Pad Thai/Stir Fry. I'm good at that, too. And various baked fish. Scratch that, I've gotten pretty good at a variety of things by now. ![]()

Little twitter exchange between Matt Rhodes, David Gaider, and I. Couldn't let them diss my Southern roots.
Cool, rainy morning today in Virginia. Waiter offered me grits. I NOPE'd out of that. Breakfast, then exploring.
@davidgaider tried grits in Texas once, such a sad breakfast. thankful they're not a staple up north *chugs maple syrup*
Porter McHenry @lpmc94@MattRhodesArt @davidgaider New Orleans grits are MUCH better.
@lpmc94 @MattRhodesArt Don't listen to that, Matt. All grits are gross unless you grew up with them or you need extra spackle.
@davidgaider @MattRhodesArt No disrespect Mr. Gaider, but that is a complete falsehood. Shrimp and grits is one of the best Southern dishes.
That's my Luvi!

and oohhh, a steaming bowl of gumbo would be choice right now...

As an European I'm amazed what people eat for breakfast, I eat toast with butter, drink a glass of milk and I'm good to go. Eating substantial stuff like fried meals or extremely sugary stuff for breakfast would insta-kill my stomach and my gall bladder.
Seriously, fried foods for breakfast? ![]()

Beignets at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. Perfection. Basically fried dough with powdered sugar on top.

While it's an interesting discussion, why don't we keep this topic about DAI news and not breakfast trends.
