Wow, David Gaider certainly treats fans with sheer and utter disdain these days.  I think he needs to get back to the roots of where he came from when he 1st started in the business rather than sounding like the poster child for pretentiousness.  I also simply do not believe the absoluteness of the blog he just made.  Far too many examples of characters that were popular in one game returning or having larger rolls in follow up games.

He's not saying that popular characters don't return. He stated that they don't return just for popularity.

Didn't that already happen once with Oghren in awakening and they stated they would never do that again?

Yeah.  While I agree with the ideas behind the post, they could have been phrased a lot better.  And with fewer cheap shots thrown in.

That's an understandable complaint. But keep in mind that the devs are human too. We get pretty hostile on these forums(towards each other) but those interactions are optional. Imagine dealing with the entire forum as (part of) your job. Or coming here with some clarification and being harassed by people for no rational reason. Knuckle-draggers is pretty mild don't you think?

It's getting to the point where I don't even read his blog anymore. I already stopped following him on twitter and just read the stuff that gets posted here because its tempered by all the fun people in this thread and the fun comments from other devs.

I'm not sure Oghren came back because he was popular - I remember a whole lot of complaining that he wasn't a fan favourite when BioWare revealled him as the returning character. Maybe that just goes to show that character popularity is hard to define.

I like the little guy fine myself, but I don't get the impression that he has a large fanbase compared with, for example, Shale. (Or Morrigan, Alistair, Zevran and Leliana but they were all out of the question for obvious reasons.) He is, however, probably the Origins companion who is least likely to be dead at the end of the game. I suspect that has more to do with his return than anything else.

Yeah I loved Oghren, though him being voiced be Steve Blum really helped. Hmm I just recall reading it somewhere though I can't remember where unfortunately T___T

I think he was brought back because players tended to do Orzammar last, and therefore had less time with him than other companions.  Maybe they thought we needed more time for him to grow on us?

Steve Blum voiced oghren?! I feel silly for not knowing that, it seems so obvious now I listen to him.

I do recall recently reading a post by Gaider somewhere on the forums where he said the one time he brought back a character because of a specific request or demand (I'm paraphrasing!) was Oghren in DA:A and he regretted it. I've been on forums hiatus since August 2013 until just recently, though, so I can't say how recent his post was or in which thread. But that may be what you're thinking of. Heck, maybe it was from a blog.... I don't remember! *hangs head*

Steve Blum is the best! He is simultaneously Oghren, Wolverine and Starscream <3.

I think I remember them saying that, although annoyingly I cannot find any such remarks using a quick google search.

DG is awfully pissy towards [some] fans, especially when he posts on here BUT I really didn't get that vibe from this particular post. The point he makes is valid and sensible so I don't really care all that much how he chooses to communicate it. It only puts me off when he's the uncalled for kinda pissy. Then he kinda reminds me of Mean Girls.

Don't know why, I thought : " Cullen ! " when I read Gaider's post.

If he is really the next companion revealed, we have our answer !

I remember it too, it was very recent. I think it was in one of the "please can we have [character X]" threads, where he basically said petitions were more likely to harm a companion's chances of reappearing, not help them.

I'm pretty sure it got restated on this thread not too long ago about Maeveris (I probably spelled that wrong) from the comics because people wanted her to appear in Inquisition.

I think anyone has the right to be a bit jaded when you get extremely rabid fans like us from time to time :s

The vast vast majority of fans that are on this site on a regular basis are nice, respectful, eager to learn about a new game.  It's their hobby.  There are a few numbskulls that hang around no doubt about it but to make silly blanket statements like he has done on more than one occasion simply makes him look worse than just good old curmudgeonly David.  Just my opinion, others may disagree.

Yes, it was along those lines. :) and I just read his aforementioned blog post, where he does mention Oghren again and how bringing him in for reasons other than the story didn't work out well.

I love to see returning cameos of NPCs, but I also prefer each new game have brand new companions. My inner fan girl May pine for certain faves or LI potentials, but my more "serious" gamer prefers keeping things new and fresh. I think the only Companion I've truly been happy to hear is returning is Varric. Alternatively, I was never a big fan of Oghren coming back in Awakening or Anders in DA2. So I'm glad character popularity isn't high on their list when deciding who to bring back.

Sure. It's simply not going to sway me one way or the other, even if someone thought their advocacy "worked" (because the character eventually returned...or didn't return, I suppose). If a character returns, it's because the story worked better with them involved, and no other reason. The last time I brought forward a character solely because someone told me to was Oghren in Awakening. Not going to happen again.

It was actually on page 1037 of this very thread...

Yeah, someone joked about starting a Mae for Dragon Age IV thread during one of the threads here, that's when he said that.

I'm not sure if it's the increased moderation, but the BSN feels like a much better place than it was say, a year ago.
