I really hope that any military organization will be treated as a real and functioning entity, and not given the same handwave as in Mass Effect, where it was obvious that the closest any dev came to the real military was by watching CNN or something (I almost expected an 'over and out' at some point).
This means that there should be established customs and traditions within the organization, as well as clear-cut ranks and functions for the ranks. even if this is just kept off-game so to speak, it is valuable in order to create the missions. See it as the developers own personal wiki.
Another thing, which is related to this is the equipment. Armour and weapons are expensive, and even more so in a world without any automated industry. That means that if there is no plausible way to support full armour, swords, shields, horses and a gold-plated helmet crest, then the immersion will be... damaged. I don't care if it is because the military organization is using slavery or have rich backers, but there must be something - and preferably believable (Cerberus in Mass Effect has the support of rich backers as well as legal fronts - even so, the sheer amount of hardware and people involved stretched my belief to the breaking point).

I truly hope they bring back the companion customization, I hate looking at the SAME ARMOR all game!! Not to mission choosing the companion specialties like in Origins. And duel wielding swords again would definitely be a major plus!!! Even if it is limited to a "short sword" model like in many other RPG games, regarding the thief class, Or maybe I am just too old school in the RPG concept??
From what we've seen so far, the player is able to find (make? buy?) armour pieces and sets that are modular, as in they have a distinctive appearance but change to fit each companion's "look".
Assuming these are two companions' original unique appearances:

Finding a particular breastplate armour piece might make one character look like this:

While the other one might look like this, with the same armour piece:

Here's what another armour set might look like for both companions:

Or another one!

Players can also mix and match between armour sets:

Mark also stated at one of the PAXeses that other types of armour customisation, like colour, material or appearance, might also be possible in the final game.
(Developer tweets have referenced periodic tables, which are probably tongue-in-cheek but point to some more options about armour materials and customisation)

That blog post is also one of the main official sources of DA3 information we've had outside the name announcement in Mark's post the other day.

God, those sharp edges on the armours just look horrible. Smooth it a bit and it'll look great.
I think that for Cassandra's, it might even be intentional. She's a Seeker with unorthodox methods and a fairly abrasive personality - not much elegance or refined lines there. Part of the point of having unique appearances with a bunch of separate armour options is that the companion retains their distinct silhouette and look.
(Though some of the sharp corners on the Warden's (Stroud's?) pauldrons and shoulder armour do look weird.)

The more I see this the more I am starting to like this idea.. It may end up being one of the worst or best feature of DA3

@coles4971 Fenris' armor must have given you fits XD.
Why yes, I hated it.
I just don't want Bioware to try too hard to make the armour look "cool", because IMO sharp edges and spikes doesn't look cool, it just looks bad.

I hope that DA3 won´t be some chainmail bikiny style plate armors or I get art attack.
What I like most on the DA2 armours that first 2 acts had actually much better looking armours, even more realistic armors than last one in third act, aside from armours please make this game less AWZOME BUTTONZ style like you did in DA2 and bring back old good DA:O combat which won´t be something like Super Sonic or Pokemon SMASH IT game...
