This topic really had me on the fence as I can see the argument either way. The rogue has been my favorite class in Dragon Age but I would have been okay if they had incorporated "lock bash/burn" abilities for the other classes.

I agree. It would be nice to have the option even if it had a high chance of damaging the lock or something. But hopefully DAI will be full of places we'll be happy to return to in order to liberate our moth eaten scarves.

Shame lockpicking is rogue specific.

I really want to know if warriors will have a ranged option. I felt a bit silly having fenris or whoever standing impotently around while firing off aoe damage things.

Well, there was that "chain-grab" thing shown in the GameInformer dev video, and possibly the PAX one as well. Don't know if that counts for you or not.

Damn. I was really hoping for a bash lock ability thing like in BG or something. The whole reason I kept playing as a rogue before getting mods was because I didn't want to be forced to have a rogue companion or miss chests. I guess it won't be so bad since Varric is awesome to have around, but, still.

As much as I would also like a bash/burn lock ability for warriors and mages, I don't know if it would work within the confines of DAI's mechanics. It worked in BG and NWN because the mechanics there were die-based. You had your skillsets and points you could pump them full of, but that mostly helped in increasing the changes of a good die-roll. You could have wicked lockpick but still not be able to open a chest on your first try because of an unfavorable die-roll. In DA (as far as I can tell, at least) we don't have probabilities like that. In DA2, if your Cunning is 40, you can successfully pick a complex lock (in DAO if you also had the lockpick talent of the necessary level). There's no probability you'll fail. The only way to fail is not have enough points in Cunning (or the aforementioned lockpick talent).

You could have a strength - or relevant stat check - for bash by chest though, right? I'm replaying Origins and switching out Leliana in order to only open chests is a hassle.

Chain grab? Do you mean, like, the warrior ran and did something physical in the world like pull a chain to aid in combat. I think I could live with that. Harmoniously.

PS. I think I actually recall doing that with a lever and spikes in the Legacy DLC?

The chain grab is a warrior ability. If you're facing an opponent that's standing out of reach you throw a chain at him, which you then use to pull him towards you. You don't pick up chains from the floor or anything like that, you just pull out a chain from thin air.

- Here the chain pull is used.

Edit: Hinata posted a video before me, but I didn't see it.

Oh, OK. Thanks interesting, cheers.

(But, it's not the same as ranged attack. I want to be AoEing the group and peppering them with arrows, I guess.)

We still don't know if warriors will be able to use bows or crossbows, but if they don't you should probably play as a rogue archer or a mage.
Bioware have been tight-lipped when people ask if we'll be able to use any weapon with any class, only replying with a "we're considering it".

You mean: if your Strength is below X, you can't bash the chest open (and possibly have it get stuck for good?); if it's in the range between X and Y, you can bash it open and get what was inside; if it's over Y, you bash it open but the contents get destroyed? I could see that working. And for mages, substitute Strength with Magic.

Something like that. I like the destroyed bit. That's kind of how it works anyway for rogues and lockpicking. Maybe even have a higher stat required for warriors so it's comparatively easier for rogues but still possible.

Eeek. I hadn't even considered playing as one character and a warrior with no ranged option. (I'm sure people do but I'm more of a party gal.) (By which I certainly don't mean whatever that implies outside of party RPG combat. :P)

There you go mate:

Concrete is a composite material composed of water, coarse granular material (the fine and coarse aggregate or filler) embedded in a hard matrix of material (the cement or binder) that fills the space among the aggregate particles and glues them together.

Famous concrete structures include the Hoover Dam, the Panama Canal and the Roman Pantheon. The earliest large-scale users of concrete technology were the ancient Romans, and concrete was widely used in the Roman Empire. The Colosseum in Rome was built largely of concrete, and the concrete dome of the Pantheon is the world's largest.

After the Roman Empire collapsed, use of concrete became rare until the technology was re-pioneered in the mid-18th century. Today, concrete is the most widely used man-made material (measured by tonnage).

j/k ;)

No need to worry, in a few hours people will start posting spoilers from The Masked Empire without consideration for those of us who didn't get the book two days before it is supposed to be released. That'll probably reveal some new stuff that'll play into DA:I. ;)

(this is a joke, btw!)

That chain grab is blatant Mortal Combat rip off and totally stupid idea. Just another awesome button feature. One more thing to show us how deeply DA has wondered into Awesome Lands.

About takeyourplace , do you think they're really going to go through the whole 2000+ submissions before Monday? It just seems like so much 0_o. I'd like to believe they will want to see all the entries and not choose from the first few hundred that were sent in.

No, I would say the chain grab is essentially using an ability from ME3, that being lash  (I can't remember if it is in  the single player game or in multiplayer)  These games have shared things like abilities and animations so it is easier to essnetially adapt an exisiting ability and tweak it.

I don't mind the chain pull. Lots of people say that the combat in DA:O was much better than it was in DA2 (which I mostly agree with), but the biggest weakness in the DA:O combat was how slow it was. The chain pull will be available to those who want to skip the part where we have to run up to our enemies to fight them,  it's basically a fast-travel option while in combat. And remember, this is a completely optional ability. Just skip putting talent points into it if you don't want it.

The largest complaint I have about combat abilities are the rocks that shoot up when a warrior slams the ground, and that's such a minor thing that I don't even really care about it. As long as the combat doesn't turn into another button=awesome, JRPG-esque sugoifest I'm good.

There are many games that have the warriors use a chain pull ability (and not just warriors sometimes). The most recent example outside of DAI I can think of is the new ESO MMO, Guild Wars 2, I think Kingdoms of Amalur also had something like that (I could be wrong), Dragon's Dogma had a similar ability for one of their classes, and I bet many other games that I just haven't come across or remember right now. To attack DAI specifically for it when so many others do it is silly. Plus it really is a useful ability when you think about it.
