Okay, so confirmed companions so far are:
Cassandra, Vivienne, Varric, Solars, Iron Bull, Cullen
Is Sera confirmed or just hinted at? If not, then we have three more companion reveals. I hope the bearded Grey Warden hasn't been scrapped.
Iron Bull could be a special rogue/warrior hybrid, similar to how Varric has a unique crossbow. Iron Bull could use big swords like the Arishok did and still be considered a rogue. That'd be neat.
Have the devs commented on the Cullen reveal at all or is it too early?

I'd say that pretty much confirms him, i doubt they'd be recording for 20+ hours if he wasnt a companion
I am trying to temper myself a bit just in case. Confirmed presence. Confirmed "much more" lines than previous entries. Confirmed raunchy lines. Semi-confirmed "Companionship", though what that means to Ellis might be different than what it would mean to us.
There is part of me that thinks they wouldn't have let a companion reveal get "cleared" for the actor to announce and not the marketing team, so it might be like Steve Valentine's announcement. We shall see.

Just that he was coming back for Inquisition as Alistair. That was pretty much it, IIRC. Which is why I am trying to temper expectations with Cullen's announcement. Logical part of myself is all "they wouldn't do a reveal like that via the VA's Twitter" and the other part of me is still kinda screaming internally. I can't quite make out what she is saying. It sounds like, 'ASGHFJKJFHSDJ"...

Yes, he tweeted that he is recording Alistair for DAI.
It's much better to wait until there's more confirmation. Excitement now will only mean disappointment later if he turns out not to be a companion. It would be frustrating if fans got angry with Bioware later because they hyped themselves up too much using information that was unclear.
Five VO sessions is also not necessarily a sign of being a companion. Major characters have multiple voiceover sessions - possibly many more than five.

But I'd avoid being overjoyed about the "confirmed" Cullen companion and LI until we've actually heard something about it from the devs. We can't be sure it's true unless they say it is.

For some reason, I thought you were referencing something much older from one of the previous two games. Tuesday morning for you, I guess!
Yeah, this is weird. On one hand, I have an urge to congratulate the Cullen fans because I know they've taken a lot of flak in the past, but on the other hand, if this is really a reveal of a companion and LI, this is a really weird way of it happening.
At any rate, I'm fine about Cullen either way, never really been a fan or hater of his. My heart still holds onto faint hope for Varric, so... meh.

Greg Ellis *did* say that he was playing Anders again, before DA2 came out, probably due to a misunderstanding of some sort.

Do you think a voice actor would know the details of their character's role in the game, or what a companion even was in the sense that we use it, here?

Edit: Nope, seems like my mind just jumped to conclusions on it's own. The only dev statement even involving Scribe/ painter girl I could find is the one David just mentioned, where he says that not all people in the artwork that she's part of would be companions.

Considering the character, and by nature Cullen is hardly "raunchy" (the guy stutters at the mere mention of The Blooming Rose) it can be likely believed that this would mean we encounter Cullen in a romantic setting/manner. Given that NPC romances are unlikely, I think that is where we are making the connection to believe that this means Cullen's likelihood for a companion role is high.
I actually do think a voice actor would know a lot of details about their character's role in the game, as they have to be given direction and a sense of what is occurring around them in order to do the character justice. Greg Ellis seems like a smart man, I'm sure he can figure out what we mean by "a companion" in the sense of a Dragon Age game.

I think it was just David pointing out that not everyone from The War Room was a companion and people just looked to Scribe Girl as the most obvious to not be a companion. It is a logical jump, but I don't think it has been confirmed or denied explicitly.

I thought the same way a while ago and tried to find out if it had been said officially, and couldn't find anything. It seems like people just assumed she wasn't, and that became the unspoken consensus.
(I still think it's unlikely that she's a companion, though.)

There has been NPCs with raunchy dialogue that didn't even talk to the player character in the previous game. Not everything recorded is something said to the play character, some stuff are ambient only and others are said in-between NPCs while the PC is "peeping" (aka arriving on the scene at the worst time possible).
Also, like someone said previously, raunchy doesn't really fit the Cullen seen in the previous games as well...
