Having never really looked at BF3, is the primary level lighting still static?John Epler wrote...
BF3 being more realism-focused does not necessarily mean that DA3 (or any other games that use the engine, for that matter) have to also look more realistic. Really, the only thing you're going to see as a 'BF3 feature' in terms of visual style is that the lighting engine is significantly better than what we had previously and allow for more nuanced lighting, like in BF3.
Frostbite 2? Really?

Probably for the best. Judging by how much more easily the Hulk smashed that F-35 than the dragon in "The Avengers", the player wouldn't have much chance of surviving such a battle anyway.John Epler wrote...
Visual style will be derived far more heavily from texture and model choices rather than the engine being used. As much as I've argued for it, you will likely never fight a dragon from the cockpit of an F-35.

Frostbite does realtime lighting and shadows if I'm not mistaken, so it really shouldn't be.devSin wrote...

lol, Brock, the hell man, I know it was you who kept pushing BioWare to do this exact thing. It's one thing to be skeptical but turnarounds like this just make you seem impossible to please, ever (by bioware at least, for what they have done to draw your eternal ire).
I'm happy they're working with a new engine that is more powerful on a technical level than what they've used before. Its simply that there have been zero Frostbite 2 games that are party based fantasy RPGs to even sort of judge how this will look or turn out visually or performance wise. Even with another engine like Cryengine that is usually thought of for its more "realistic" looking games, there are plenty of examples of other games that use it for a different visual look.
I'm genuinely excited to see what they are able to do with it, but I'm not blindly thinking that simply slapping "Powered by Frostbite™ 2" will cure all of the things that I think went astray with Dragon Age 2 visually from an art perspective or even a technical perspective. We have no idea what to expect this game will look like since Frostbite 2 has never been used in this manner before, at least in anything thats been publically available.

I looked at several clips that were made by the frostbite 2 engine. What I saw in terms of realism in textures as in skin and also facial expressions I for one was very pleased.
Agree with Brock on the fact that the people who are using the engine decide in the end how the potential of the engine will be used and how the visual and technical aspects in the game will look like.
The fact that BW uses an engine that has much more possibilities to create DA3 gives me an optimistic feeling for the next game. Makes me think about having weather conditions and a real day/night cycle being visible in game being possible for example...THE POSSIBILITIES

Lol, and that's news to you? It wouldn't be Brock if he wasn't the eternal pessimist no matter what (even if BW does something he was asking for).

That's what i'd expect too, as it was handy approach. On the other hand since they're supposedly looking into Skyrim and such, they just might go for that 'realtime' approach to daycycle, now that their new game engine allows it.Maria Caliban wrote...
I believe that like DA 2, the day/night cycle will be player controlled.

Seriously though, I am glad you can at least offer a grudging, qualified admission of the possible benefits of the thing you asked for to begin with. Carry on.

When a developer talks about character customisation, story, quests and companions, they are talking to the players.
When a developer talks about DLC, multiplayer and the TOTALLY AMAZING things that they have planned just around the corner, they are repaying their debt to a Dark Master.

Have no problem with that if it will look like real 'night' time in the game.
To see moon and stars in the sky and darker surroundings.

If I could ask, why is that you guys are resistant to having "realistic" aesthtics (form what I've inferred you're sticking with DA II's art style)?

Realistic aesthetics tend to look dated as time passes.

As for DA2's art style... it isn't really that stylized either. I kind of wish it was.

How dare BioWare use more powerful technologies to develop their games. I expect them to code in Notepad on Windows 95 and I swear if I see a non-rotary phone anywhere in the Edmonton or Montreal offices, I'm going to flip.

I'd argue the particular screenshots included there don't quite make this point -- instead, they demonstrate that 2d graphics can look much better than early 3d, and that a 3d game can look better than another published two years earlier, or more.hoorayforicecream wrote...

Current 3d graphics reach the point where fidelity is high enough the games aren't likely too look very outdated couple years down the road (the examples you post are over 10 years old) ... and even if they did, that's minor concern for games which get bulk of their sales in first few months after the release. It's not a MMO that has to be built with intention to last for long years, because that's how long it's supposed to be bringing in revenue.
