Since somebody said this could probably use its own thread... here's the thread. The actual press release.

BioWare Announces Dragon Age 3: Inquisition

The Return of Dragon Age will be Bigger, Deeper and Powered by Frostbite 2

EDMONTON, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- BioWare, a Label of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA), today announced Dragon Age™ 3: Inquisition, the next chapter in the award-winning role-playing game (RPG) franchise, is in development at BioWare Edmonton and BioWare Montreal. Coming in late 2013, Dragon Age 3: Inquisition combines the storytelling legacy BioWare is known for, with deep RPG gameplay, all on a brand new RPG game engine underpinned by EA's critically-acclaimed Frostbite™ 2 technology.

"The Dragon Age team has been working on Dragon Age 3: Inquisition for almost two years now," said Aaryn Flynn, General Manager of BioWare Edmonton and BioWare Montreal. "We've been poring over player feedback from past games and connecting directly with our fans. They haven't held back, so we're not either. With Dragon Age 3: Inquisition, we want to give fans what they're asking for — a great story with choices that matter, a massive world to explore, deep customization and combat that is both tactical and visceral."

Added Flynn, "At the same time, we know we need new technology to truly make this vision become fully realized. And we've been working with DICE to make Frostbite 2 the foundation for the engine that is going to power Dragon Age 3."

The Dragon Age franchise has received over 80 awards from critics around the world, and has sold over 8 million copies to date*. Created by BioWare, the property has spawned many novels, an animated film, comic books, collectibles and more since Dragon Age: Origins launched in 2009.

For more information about Dragon Age 3: Inquisition, including updates from the development team and a letter to the fans from Executive Producer Mark Darrah, please visit the game's official web site at http://dragonage.com. Dragon Age fans can also receive updates on Twitter® at http://twitter.com/dragonage, or on Facebook at http://facebook.com/dragonage.

Didn't expect this. Frostbite 2? Wonder how it will turn out.

I'm beginning to doubt that Aaryn Flynn is even his real name.  I bet it was forced on him by his EA masters as part of their hot rod samurai marketing scheme.

I mean come on, Aaryn?

8 million copies overall, huh? I wonder if they counted DA:A as a separate title, or if it's only DAO and DA2?

They've supposedly been working on this for two years already and all they have had ready to show us are some concept arts for companion customization. Really?

Having something to show would depend on who precisely has been working those two years, and on what.

Assuming late 2013 means this time next year, that's about a year and 3 months longer than DA2 was in development.  Hopefully the game will get delayed to give them even more time.

I know they aren't talking, but I would really like to see *something* that confirms this talk of tactical combat.  I find it very hard to believe.  Tactical cam or bust imo.

Interesting, late 2013. Well, this could have a variety of implications. 1) DA3 is going to be a launch title for next gen consoles in late 2013. 2) DA3 is going to launch on this current gen, alongside next gen consoles. Or 3) Next gen consoles are not launching until 2014.

I'll be curious to see which platforms DA3 ends up on. There seems to be a relatively small window of time to launch this title on the current gen of consoles.

Too early...
Unless they started working on DA3 like immediately after DA2... which I doubt?? :(

No, producers were mentioning landscapes and environments in their test builds at least six months ago. Check the Twitter thread for the specifics.

Honestly, that will determine if I'll get it on consoles or pc. With that said though, there's many aspects to DA3 that will first need to appeal (to me) before I even go as far as to consider purchasing it.

So they kept the subtitle. I didn't think they'd do that.

I'm cautious. Not cautiously optimistic, just cautious. Bioware has burned me twice so far and this is their last pass as far as I'm concerned. There were parts of DA2 I liked but overall it was very disappointing. ME3 was the same.

I'm willing to wait and see what happens. I wouldn't still be on here if I wasn't.

They made DA2 in literally a single year. (Awakening released in March 2010, DA3 released in March 2011 iirc). They've already been working on this for like a year and a half (they didn't have the full team on the DLC) so it'll be fine.

I'm iffy about that if it's had a production of 2 years (so far). DA2 only came out last year and they'd been working on it for a little under 2 years. Doesn't seem like Bioware's style to work ahead like that.

Though I suppose quite a bit of that content is probably stuff from the cancelled DA2 expansion pack.

In order for DA3 to have the same production time as DA2, it would have to be releasing....right now, this month.  The time right now since DA2 is the time between DA:O (not including Awakenings) and DA2.

I do agree that I doubt 2 years, unless they started on small stuff early on...more like a year for the heavy development.  It will still have a year on DA2's development.

Are you agreeing with me or not?

Either way, what you're saying isn't making the sinking feeling in my gut go away.

Late 2013 or early 2014 sounds good. That should give the developers enough time to make DA3 great.
