Given that it's already been confirmed that there will be improved combat, increased customisation, an open world, unique dungeons, player character voice acting, story tailoring by in game decisions, different origins and a dialogue wheel...
1: At the very least, as much companion interaction as DA2. DA2 was undoubtedly not as good at DAO but one major improvement was the increase in companion specific quests and the friendship/rivalry mechanic. On that note, potential companions who are templar pro shouldn't join with a mage pro protagonist and vice versa, so a different set of companions based on your side in the inquisition would be a plus (with a few non-commital, overlapping Varric types and a love interest who will follow me into hell and back out of pure adoration is just fine, thank you!). We can still rival, just not over something like what side of the war you are on. Wasn't a problem in DAO with the blight, DA2 handled it well with the rival system, but I think a friendship/rival system based on smaller choices would be better, with the option to follow me hampered by my major associations rather than a breaking point at the finale. I want my followers on my chosen side from the get go, even if we disagree on the methods or the fine print.
2: Better character hair. It might seem like a silly thing, but to me, my character creation is pivotal in drawing me into any game in which the player character shapes the story. The helmet hair choices of both Origins and 2 were truly terrible, and a greater number are needed for NPC uniqueness. Too many times have NPCs been twinned across both games. Likewise for player character clothing/armour.
3: On that note, more interactable NPCs. Having a low number of named characters is fine, but deserted "towns" are a bit disappointing. I remember wondering into Lirene's Ferelden Imports and being almost blown away by the crowd, but other areas in both games were sadly deserted. Ditto the battle for Redcliffe...I "recruited" a couple of characters and battled along side a handfull of nameless soldiers...it was hard to care about Redcliffe with no emotive NPCs to want to save.
4: A decent "home" base. The camp in DAO and Hawke Manor in DA2 were all well and good, but I would like a bigger, more immersive and interactable home for my character, in whatever form suits the story line of course. Maybe the option to expand/improve/fortify it (and the option not to). Sometimes these little frivalous customisation things really pull you into the world.
5: On the topic of story...I really want to avoid the lazy "three years later" thing. I mean, I left Hawke after the deeproads and then suddenly she had a mansion. Meredith goes from background chatter to totally screwing up Kirkwall in a matter of minutes. Anders creates the ultimate in terrorist plots in the blink of an eye. Key story arcs appeared in DA2 without proper foundations to build on. I would much prefer a single, all spanning story. I totally get what the writers were going for, especially with a narrated style story from Varric, but please don't make a habit of that. It interrupted the flow too much. I needed to earn that mansion, not just wake up in it. I needed to see Meredith building up to her takeover of Kirkwall and her lyrium madness setting in (possibly with an option to STOP HER before it got too crazy) because Hawke wouldn't have sat there and allowed injustices for years on end. I get the Anders thing, suddenly realising he screwed us all over was fantastic, but that was the only one.
On a 6th note: non-romancable characters are fine. Please make sure all romancable characters don't give a rats-tooshie what gender my character is.
