This. This right here. This is what it all hinges on. A story is only good relative to the amount the player can influence it. The Atmosphere is only good relative to the amount it reacts to and embellishes the story and the player. I can find silver lining in both installments of Dragon age, but honestly, both left me fairly disappointed. For instance, in DA2 i felt as if i could never develop Hawke's goals or motives. He seemed like just a mercenary (which *can* be cool!) who only got the rewards because he happened to be standing by in the right place at the right time. All by chance. I want to decide what side i choose, who to manipulate, if i want to betray one side, or play both against each other. I want my more sly companions to cheer me on as i state this plan to them and the more honorable ones express their concern or disgust A couple times it felt like choices were being ripped away from me simply because the devs didn't want me to have the choice. Like the pro-templar ending to DA2 where you're unable to kill Bethany - but perfectly able to let Meredith do it. Is that suppose to be endearing? It just shows that Hawke is weak in his beliefs. Imo, it was even worse in DAO where choices felt frequently ripped away from me because "no, you have be a grey warden". When i finally met Arl Howe in Denerim as a human noble I wanted to thank him. He eliminated two huge obstacles in my way of taking Highever for my own. You wanna fight to the death? Fine you magnificent bast*** but im buying you a drink first. The decisions of the player must be frequent, flamboyant and have consequence.
2. Fluff.
Rpgs usually have a mix of fluff and crunch. Crunch is all the mechanics and fluff is all the stuff that helps you get immersed in the world. I'm really disappointed at the lack of fluff i can decide for my character in the last 2 Dragon ages. Why do we have to choose between being a devout andrastian or complete atheist? I should be able to worship the old gods, or follow the spirituality of the Dalish.I should be able to express if my character is pure or a lush, selfish or giving. I would also love to choose my character's heritage - a decadent minor tevinter magister or pompous orleisian noble. However i am pro voiced protagonist - so this is sadly impossible.
3. Followers.
Whether they're your own personal brute squad or devoted team of friends, companions are a big part of DA. Learning about them and learning about leading them is always a great part of the experience. I feel like the approval system in DA2 is far superior to that of DA:O. In DA:O you had to constantly worry about upsetting them if you wanted to experience their depth or even make them as effective as they could be in combat. This discouraged roleplaying big time, you couldn't even really "lie" to endear yourself to them so that's a moot point even if you were playing a more cunning warden. However i still think there's room for improvement. Another thing i would like to see is more depth and oppurtunity to shift the follower's views closer to your own (like hardening allistair and leliana). Also since i met Varric and Anders I've been meaning to say that i *insist* on a "bromance" arch.
4. Customization of the keep.
I admit i'm a little scant on the details, however since i heard about the protagonist and his companions coming into ownership of a keep, a base of operations, i adored the idea. I also began to dream about the possibilities. And almost all those possibilities hinge on one aspect: customization. In my cozy lodge, secreted away, I want to hide from the war for a little while with my team and make plans. I want to decide the look of everything i can. Will My keep be spartan and practical stocked and ready for war? Will it be plastered with orleisian paintings and stocked with tevinter wine? Will I be able to stock it with elf slaves if i choose? What about the soldiers/guards? I want to design a coat of arms for my guards and instruct them how to treat the non-combatants of the keep. I would also like to place companions in certain positions with certain duties. I want to manage my diplomats/spies/soldiers. And even change the background music. Obviously i don't want to turn DA into a strategy game and all of this should be optional (just pawn the choices off to a seneschal or something). I would also love to see the nations I favor showing me their support. If i help Orlais or Tevinter, they send chevaliers or magisters to back me up.
5. Can we please get a nice girl fighter? One who is feminine yet strong? Aveline was a characiture of a butch warrior girl and we've gotten a flood of that fighter chick stereotype that wears light armor and uses bows/daggers. Mhairi made my eyes beam when i first saw her in awakening...but we know how that turned out. I was so excited at all those morals i wanted to make her break. Actually, new idea. A pretty young blonde templar girl who kicks a** and scolds me for being morally lax who can be a LI for my mage.
