I play mostly randoms as invariably the people on my friends list are already playing or I can only play a quick game and have to turn down invites. Probably why I play gold so little.

Randoms all the way. Most of the time, I even lobby hop, only playing a game or maybe two before moving on to a new lobby. I find it more challenging in a good way. The unpredictability of what you find and see is great for laughs/ranting/rejoicing/etc.
ETA: Struggling to extraction is a good thing in my opinion. I want to feel rewarded for completing the match, not punished for failing. Plus if you only play with friends you'll miss out on some of the awesome stories - insanely stupid mistakes you've seen people do and laughed at, talking a newbie through a late-wave solo, ridiculous conversations between people who don't know anything about each other and just want something to chat about...

I like to play with friends for the most part since we usually all have mics and communicate what is going on and our plans to get through the waves. I do play with randoms a lot though mainly because the friends I have stop playing this game and don't care to play it when I am. Then there are my friends who by the time I get on have fill up the slots for their games and I can not join but they will let me know if a spot comes open.

Most of the time I play PUGs, because I'll see someone on my friend list is on, but then I try to join and the match is full... I don't want to sit around waiting, so I'll just search for an open game instead...
I've never coordinated a time to play with friends, so it's the luck of the draw who will be on, and have an open slot...
I should note, that everyone on my friends list are people from either the BSN, or someone who I played with in a PUG and I (or they) sent a friend request...

I prefer playing with regulars without a doubt. I have more fun playing with people I know and I know I can count on them. When I play with regulars there is also more opportunity for us to have fun and mess around with each other and go on suicidal platinum runs, troll each other with lvl ones on gold, or try crazy builds and weapon combinations. All my best memories from playing MP have come from playing with friends.
When I first started playing MP (a week after release so I could do SP) I had no friends at all so I played with randoms all the time. I got to the point where playing with randoms seemed like more of a chore so someone suggested that I join one of the MP groups on here to find some regulars to play with. Friends always > pugs in a cooperative game i think.

My friends list for this game doesn't include a specific group that I get regular play time with. Some people on my friends list are newer players who can't competently play gold. These are the people I met in random lobbies. Some of them are cool in that they don't have the White/Geth/Gold mindset and can be coaxed into playing more aggressively, and some just don't realize that they're being carried. People I've met on BSN are good, but most of them already regularly play with others, so I don't play with them often. When I do, it's always very fun, and I don't feel as much pressure to do every damned thing myself. I like playing with some on my friends list more than others, but on the whole, it's a positive experience.
Randoms, on the other hand... sometimes, yeah, they're okay, occasionally even good, but a lot of the time, they aren't. Most are campers, not willing to play aggressively. Since I find sitting behind a counter for 30+ minutes boring, I tend to 'rambo' with these people, so I end up burning more gels and ops packs. I end up feeling like I have to do a lot of stuff myself for the match not to go sideways, and I sort of think there's a feedback loop where if I get an objective, they're less inclined to bother with the next one, and if I get a lot of kills, they're less inclined to bother with any of it.
On the whole, playing with randoms is kinda lame, most of the time, and playing with friends is decent, most of the time.

I prefer to play with my regular team, the laughs we have outweigh any lack of skill or bad luck any of us may have. Besides that, too many peeps in pugs seem to wanna run off an Rambo everything. It's hard to res the whole team when they're spread over half of Noveria and clutching every objective gets old fast.
Don't get me wrong, the few that made it to my friends list are worth any amount of trouble...

I like both! I met most of my friends through PUGs so even if I now play less PUGs and more games with friends I couldn't do so without PUGs.

Id rather play with friends as we talk and i like to stratergise each map. But its very rare any of them play. So i pretty much play with randoms. And i have had some good games and some awful ones. Lol. To be fair im not completely bothered who i play with so long as i can play. P.s can you hook me up with an upgrade for my harrier please
