I can understand Legion's reasoning for his fixation with Shepard-Commander, he says it himself: Shepard's code was superior, after all he destroyed a Reaper.

However, when we ask him about the armor in ME2 and he says "No data available" it just seemed such a forced way of making us care for him. It's like they're shouting "HE HAS A SOUL! CARE FOR HIM!" Same with the rifle comment he makes when we're in the Consensus. Which is funny because, imo, the writing behind Legion was already good.

At any rate, my point is not to discuss if it was forced or not, I'm just curious as to why you think he'd keep the armor. Pure empathy, something more practical?

I have a lot of respect for the community fanwork and non-canon interpretation of events so I'm just throwing the ball around.

My preferred interpretation is that he doesn't know quite why he did it. Something about the idea appealed to him and it wasn't entirely rational, but he can't explain when asked for a concrete reason.

i like the idea that he picked it up and it made him question how the geth operate - maybe he could be different

imo it just proves that synthetics and organics have more in common than both groups thought, both do spontaneous things.

Was he connected to Shepard's body recovery? I miss that story, any links?

The Geth, as a species, are comparatively new. Occasionally, their programming may lead to them arbitrarily choosing one way of doing things as opposed to equally viable ways. There may not even be any real reason behind such decisions, just some facet of their initial programming that makes some options more commonly chosen than others. Humans have something similar; we call it intuition sometimes, but a lot of the times, when we choose one option among several viable options, we do so because we simply like it better, whatever the hell that means.

Basically, I think Legion found itself attracted to that option and it didn't understand why. It liked Shepard's armor, but it didn't know it was capable of liking things, so when asked why he chose one set of options over another, equally viable set of options, he doesn't understand why. He doesn't understand that he just likes some things.

Don't remember when the phrase appeared in ME3. Which mission was it? I remember when you're in the Geth collective or whatever, you see one image of a Geth using the same model sniper rifle as Legion used, and he remarks that "it's... an efficient model," but that's about it as far as my memories of Legion on Rannoch go.

Yeah, the rifle phrase is said when inside the Geth Collective, which I thought was a very tasteful way - if you notice how Legion pauses to respond, rhyming with the tone used to say "No data available" in ME2 - of telling us Legion was a key unit behind the Geth history.

"No data available" means that his reasons for making a particular decision is irrational, such as using Shepard's N7 armour instead of a more advanced one which could increase survivability. The Geth as a sentinient synthetic species, conduct a consensus to find the most rational decision that agrees with the current situation, in order to gain optimal success. Legion frequently informs you of the success rate in certain circumstances, for example he may inform you that there is a 98.4% chance of death on the suicide mission. In other decisions he conducts a consensus where all 1183 units in his platform make a an individual decision which is put forward to the final consensus, for example the decision involving the heretics. Both methods of consensus, however has a rational explanation. The heretic consensus was a democracy and the probability consensus was based on mathematics and calculation that coincides with reality.

This has led me to believe that there was no actual consensus made when Legion took Shepard's armour and made it his own. It was an irrational decision. These are decisions that can only be made by organics as it is based strongly on emotion. Therefore Legion was feeling emotion. This is not familiar to the Geth, thus Legion cannot comprehend it. Rational thinking cannot find a solution to his actions. Therefore he says "No data available". It confirms that the Geth do indeed "have a soul".

The conversation with Legion about your armor is BioWare subtly breaking the 4th wall. Legion is an avatar for the Geth. Shepard is an avatar for the players. I think that is the source of its fascination. I don't think it's any coincidence that Legion took an interest in Shepard only as soon as players around the world started inhabiting the character. It's a 'meta' thing. They are equals in ways they both cannot possibly identify. Legion cannot answer Shepard's question, and cannot comprehend it's decision, because if it could everyone would become aware of the fact they are characters in a video game.
