DA2 might not be pointless but Hawke sure as hell was.

Strawman that does not hold up when you look at things. Witthout Hawke, DA2 would not have happened the way it did.

I feel like killing some darkspawn. In all new areas of the Deep Roads. Also, I feel like visiting the Dales. And finally finding out where Arlathan actually was.

In the Arlathan Forest between Tevinter and Antiva I'd guess...... Or in / around the Primeval Thaig if you believe the theories

Let's put this to rest and in DA:4, we'll have Mages running around outside of the Circles, the entire point the DA team is having this War to begin with. They just want to have a random encounter where Mages being in the party isn't totally ridiculous.  Because that's the (stated) goal of the writers/devs. To have a Mage/Templar schism so that in future games, mages don't have to be locked in one building and any others found require a suspension of disbelief.

So in other words, the devs created a world, and then have to break it because the rules of their own world interfere with their encounter gameplay?

You're right.

Without Hawke, maybe the Arishok would have destroyed Kirkwall and then we wouldn't have this stupid Mage vs. Templar war. Oh, if only.

Pretty much, yes. This isn't speculation on my part, this is what the devs stated.

I'm not sure if it was a forum post or something that was discussed in the Developer Notes of the DA2 Player's Guide, but THEY were the ones who said it, not me. That they set the whole Mage/Templar War up so that there would be a way to encounter Mages in the world at large and it not require some suspension of disbelief or hand-waving.

I would try and find some quotes for you, but I am out of town and on my phone, so I can't know. Maybe later this week.

Unlikely.

Without Hawke's involvement with Isabella, she would likely have been discovered by the Qunari and no war waged. And, even if the Qunari invasion happened and the Kirkwall Mage/Templar skirmish didn't happen, the events of Asunder proved that the Mage/Templar War would actually have broken out regardless.

Which is, honestly, even worse. Because Asunder makes everything that happened in DA2 COMPLETELY pointless. Hawke's actions meant nothing. Arguably, his existence made the lives of all his family, friends and the people of Kirkwall (including the Dalish tribe) worse. If he had never been born, nearly every aspect of the world we see in the second game would have been better.
