I hope dragon age II was the first and last time Bioware used "awesome" combat.

If you're playing some crazy over the top game, you want the combat to be crazy and over the top, you want "Awesome".
The "awesome" combat stood out in DA2 because it clearly didn't fit in with the rest of the games tone. Dragon Age is more reserved, so it needs combat animations and etc. to "fit in".

You do know that DA:O's combat was supposed to be awesome too, yes? The difference was just that in DAII the "awesome" happened directly after you pushed the button, while in DA:O it took several moments, while your character sloooowly turned and stamped to the enemy. That's all the infamous "awesome button" quote is about.
That's more realistic given you're wearing armor and weilding weapons that can be pretty heavy. Combat with swords is slower than the movie make it out ot be.
Swords at most weigh 5 pounds. Plate armor is not as heavy as people think and is extremely flexible. In fact full plate armor is less bulky and not as heavy as a firefighter wearing full gear with an oxygen tank.

These links to the museum website shows that armor and weapons were not heavy.

idk, I kind of feel as though this is subjective. Personally, I don't think the combat 'stood out' against the overall tone the story. I thought it suited it quite nicely. In fact, I think it fit the style of the game better that DAO's... less theatric combat mechanics would have. DA2 was (more so than Origins) about telling and selling the story of Hawke through the perspective of others, and on that level, the quicker, flashier combat better suited a story being told.
Well, in my opinion, anyway. Like I said, whether or not you personally thought the combat fit the game is pretty subjective. XD

Try fighting in it. I wore armor for 6 years, it wears on you. And that was modern synthetic aramid fiber armor, not plates and chains of steel.

Modern armor is actually heavier than what was worn then. I have worn both types of armor and I can tell you that the modern armor is heavier. I also have edited my post to show two links to the Metropolitan Museum of Art which bares out this conclusion.
I will repost them here:

I remember a time when the Dragon Age franchise was described as being the Spiritual Successor to Baldur's Gate I & II. That ship has obviously sailed looooooooooooong ago....
Modern day Dragon Age now resembles an action fighting game and has the attention span of a gnat story wise. Honestly, I would like to say that you can only go up from DA2 but who are we kidding? It could easily be worse... a LOT worse if they don't go back to their roots. Core RPG gamers like me DO NOT WANT Call of Ferelden: Modern Warfare (Dragon Age 3)!!!!
this.
definitely this.

So wait this thread. This is the exact kind of negative thread that makes BSN kind of hard to visit. We just get new great news that a 3rd installment is coming out and the complaining has already begun?

things it must not be: slow, boring as hell, must not make (as said above) my rogue feel like a crappy warrior and finally, (arguing with the person somewhere above), must not forget to include the fast mage auto attacks
dragon age origins' combat was flawed in that it was so boring and slow and insignificant, i wanted to join the darkspawn and murder everyone who was incapable of swinging a massive 2H sword like a badass. Also, THIS IS A FANTASY GAME. WE CAN MAKE OUR BADASS CHARCTERS MOVE WITH HEAVY SWORDS AND ARMOUR AS FAST AS WE FRICKIN WANT. PEPOLE PLAY GAMES BECAUSE OF ESCAPISM!!! CATER FOR THAT!!!!!
This is where DA2 prospered. It was NOT a button masher (I'm talking from a PC gamer perspective here), it was fast paced, looked exciting, and as I have stated already several times, made me feel BADASS.
This is not to say that DA2's combat was perfect. No I'm saying nothing of the sort. I'm also not saying that DAO got everything wrong combat-wise. I'm just saying that DA2 hit alot closer to the mark than DAO. I'm sure the guys at Bioware will work out a way to satisfy the tactical AND action cravers among the DA fanbase. Perhaps they can put 2 different combat systems into the game and let the player decide which one they want to use.
Gotta say though, finishing moves? brilliant... bring it in more, just make sure it doesnt look weird and laggy and unco-ordinated. I need my mage to rip people apart with big fiery demon hands.
Apologies for any mistakes, nerd-rages or incoherent sentances.... I'm tired and getting up in 3 hours.
Just saying though, if DA3 isn't at least as exciting combat-wise as DA2, I'm going to cry. Also, I'm going to start an uprising, uniting the darkspawn and leading them to Bioware to demand the appropriate ramifications are made to the game. Goodnight.

RPGs can have good fast combat, the Witcher 2 had good combat, Kingdoms of Amalur had good combat. DA2 was a button mash fest, it was cheesy as hell, and repetitive.
Amalur was a bit button mashy, but at least it was fun and had combos that you could execute properly, and enemies didn't explode into lego blocks while parachuting down on you.
And TW2 just had great, challenging, realistic, combat, even if it was mostly melee based.
