The engine doesn't factor into a save transfer/import mechanic.

No, it doesn't. Think of the engine as the motherboard of the computer. You can attach a flash drive to a wide-range of different motherboards and those different computers can all read the components of that drive.

Save files = structured data of the state the game is in.
i am pretty sure they can be imported on the new systems(just data). Maybe through a cloud?? seems like the only viable option or the more difficult transfer of files from one system to another.
Also another thought is why doesn't the dragon age team use XML to game and resources state? Something similar to an android manifest file

Oh! That's just a data migration job, shouldn't be any problems with it.

Hopefully you'll figure out something so the result isn't beholden to bad data from the previous games.

If not, I hope you design around the bad data this time (instead of just behaving according to the way things were supposed to work, even when they never worked right).

What? Decisions is simply 1 or 0 in asave file. It's just if-then-else when importing.

Yes, I want to see a data import. Please make sure it transfers properly, though!!!

Do a comic like Genesis for ME2

I'd like to see my decision from both games and the facts my Hawkes were female, etc

That would be the easiest, most reliable way to go about it. It would rule out any of the import bugs that plagued the previous games as well as make it much simpler to transition from one console generation to the next (no Cloud requirements, tech adaptation, etc).

Such a thing would need to be quite a bit more robust than the Genesis 'Comic', especially were it to mostly replace any traditional save import. Perhaps 2 versions could exist: a Standard version with 8-12 of the more major decisions and an Advanced version that would allow a player to fill in more minutia such as the fate of minor NPC's and sidequests.

Don't import. Or at least, allow import, but with an 'Advanced' option for returning players so they can look over their own flags.

Too many things were broken in the previous two games, not including expansions and DLC. Importing everything means importing those broken flags and getting people irritated (again).

Don't have the devs feel precious over 'But they never did this in DAA, so why should they see the fallout in DA3?' just allow it for the sake of players who did do that in DAA but found it wasn't recognised in DA2 and are expecting it won't be recognised again in DA3.

In short, give the players the tools to fix the problem at character creation. If they don't want to, that's their call. If they do, you will have made many people happy (provided it works :P).

IMO all you'd want to do is have DA3 check that the other games/DLCs are registered under the player's name so that flags are accessible and can be corrected manually as required.

Importing broken stuff won't make anyone happy.

If they use saves of DAO and DA2, they will have to mix the flags both savegames, and this, I can foresee, will cause a lot of trouble.

Maybe you can cook up a process where DA1&2's importable plot choices could be uploaded into our BSN profiles or Origin Cloud and then downloaded automatically the first time we log into DA3, save everyone worrying about keeping files and correctly importing.

Do you think we could get an interactive comic for Dragon Age like we did with Mass Effect to pick the major plot choices with? I'd like that a lot.

That, or just a tool that lets us manually go through all of the flags.

I'm hoping that we can import both DAO and 2 save files. I think some things that wasn't brought up in DA2 still needs a mention even if it's just by rumor. I'd like to know how Ferelden is faring with Cousland on the throne or what happened to Orzammar if they got themselves a paragon. Or what happened to the Alienage if they got themselves a Bann.
Also, now could be a good time for Connor to pop up if he's still alive. He must just be about ready to be called a young man at least.

Perhaps make a standalone program called "Dragon Age Save Game" where you can either create a basic import like the Mass Effect 2 Genesis comic or mix DAO and DA2 save games into raw data, easy to transfer into DA3.
Wonder if that's possible on Xbox and PS3

I like this idea:
1. Import all files related to a character (in their entirety), compile them into a single file that carries over to each successive game, that is recompiled with each new game or dlc's save data, so you end up with one long import state flag file.

2. Have the game look for any decisions it intends to import and display those decisions for the player to look over and correct if they choose. This list is then fed back into the master save file to correct or fill in any incorrect or lost data.

3. Create a sister save file with only the relevant data to the current game. The game will save and load from this file during play, to shorten load times and simplify checks.

4. Intermediary save files (our separate state files within the single game currently being played) would be represented as these smaller sister files, with a new option to compile a particular save to the master save if we so choose.

5. On final save (or each quit game or log on), this sister file, or the regular final autosave of this sister file, with completed game state checks from the current game, is then compiled with the master save file. This file is then available for import into future installations of the series and for uploading to BioWare Social/ Origin/ whatever.

5. Each set of compiled characters, (for instance, my female City Elf warden/ male warrior Hawke/ first DA:I character file) would be represented to the player by a list of the characters names and games and dlc in which they were the player character, that would scroll on screen like a codex entry as they check which files they intend to load from or import, replacing the single character save/load we currently have, for DA3 and games moving forward in the franchise. The entire game state would carry from game to game, again, as a single file.

benefit-
-The master save, one file, is always available for import into any DA game, on any future system, so long as that system features a hard drive, cloud saving, or internet connectivity.

-The master save, if it's determined that no future game will ever use a particular flag etc. can be pared down as the series progresses, as we get to Dragon Age XII or whatever. It might be nice to have a concise file that has everything any game going forward would ever need for import.

-The master save would be represented as *the* save file the player and the network need to maintain for the future, for that particular character set, reducing clutter and reducing the chances of import problems or lost saves for the future.

That's my new save system idea. Like? ;)

edit: And for DA3, I really, really want to see imports from both DA:O and DA2 (since there's not currently a master save file) ;) I'm worried about inconsistencies that might pop up from files being saved prior to an update, or my DA2 save referencing a dlc file that no longer exists for a character that still does exist. My first DA2 save does this.. I'm really hoping I won't have to play that DA2 run through again exactly the same way.

Honestly?  Give us the option to generate our own saves.  I have the sneaking suspicion that I'm not the only one who has had various technical issues over that last few years that have contributed to not having original saves.   I love the DA series but  after entering the 1000+  hours played range sometimes you just don't want to do another 100 hour DAO, DAA and DA2 playthrough just so your have a Dalish Female Rogue/Male Hawke Mage Templar siding import for DA3. This should be a standard feature, not something that a forum member makes months after the fact.

And let us choose all the variable not just a small set. If you can't do that at least make it easy for someone else to do the work.

The Witcher 2 allowed players to import Witcher 1 saves. Both games run on very different engines.

Assuming DAIII will be on the Wii U, like ME3... Will Nintendo players just have to use a Genesis-style interactive comic, or the list of backgrounds DAII used? I doubt any of the hardware companies are going to allow cross-console data transfer.

Could it be possible to add something similar to Gibbed game save editor to the game? Perhaps when you start a new game, there would be "advanced" options tab in you character creation screen where you could choose major plot decisions from DA:O and DAII, gender/race/origins/class of your Warden, Hawkes gender/class, who major character is alive, who you romanced, did you do the dark ritual etc.

Able to bring game save file would be nice to have too. But if you have lost your game saves or dont wanna to do your 5th or 234th playthrough on previous games, able to create backstory on what happened with Warden and Hawke would be great.

have us select what happened in DAO and DA2 (and DLCs) in a lore friendly kind of way.
like having a rivaini scribe writing the events that transpired that might be connected to the events in DA3.
or having cassandra or leliana write a journal while we pick the choices. alternatives like that.

How would this work on consoles, by the way? There is a new xbox coming out next year or so. Won t importing from 360 to the new one kind of...bring up issues?

Yes.  It has already been stated that the next gen consoles won't be back compatible, so DA3's decision won't be able to be imported to DA4.  Not that those decisions have had any bearing from Origins to DA2 in the first place.

I like that idea of a 'Leliana's journal' type thing for a game state generator. Nice idea.

Or rather, yes you could. If you have a copy of your master save file (something I suggested earlier) attached to your BioWare/EA profile, and that file sticks to your account, then there's no reason you couldn't download whatever compatible version of it to the new system, so long as that system uses some form of game saves and has internet connectivity. We've already got sort of lists of decisions attached to our DA:O playthroughs that successfully updated to BioWare social, so there's no reason we couldn't have a single master file that moves game to game, system to system with us as desired.

There are no other ways. You either had to attach "exporter" to previous game (probably - make a new one, stand-alone soft or service that does so), or make DA3 grab variables directly from save.

Genesis-style...I don't really think it's good. What good may it bring, that in order to change the world you need to add or remove flag? That's a hack, why would it be a part of game? Genesis was made initially for those who had no ME1 avalible (which is PS, afaik).

Perhaps an app that reads our saved games from DA:O and DA2 and generates an import for DA3 while at the same time allowing us to verify if the flags are being imported correctly. Like a Savegame Editor.

Maybe after you completed a playthrough you could get a sort of sheet that listed the choices for import (including those carried over from other games) and then in the next game there could be a sort of optional questionaire/decision comic or something like that that would let you select what your previous decisions were. You could consult the information, do it from memory or just customize a backround for your playthrough. Well thats one idea anyway, would that help with import bugs and new console issues?

Make a savegame editor, and allow users to change their plot flags.
