Who else thinks that there's a good chance DA3:I will be set mostly in an open world environment?

Or, more specifically, who thinks it'd be freakin' cool if that were the case?

I have no idea how they'd pull it off, but I'm just a gamer, not a gameroligist. I mean even games like Final Fantasy 12 managed to pull it off to some extent. If you're not directly controlling your companions, as has been the tradition, it'd be doable.

It'd be so sweet. Imagine starting off in a giant town hub like Denerim, leaving the town after exploring the crud out of it, then starting a huge-ass journey over to.... crap it's been a while since Dragon Age: Origins... uh... I'm gonna say Redcliff.

Anyway, it'd be cool. Just sayin.

I'm confused as to why controlling companions should have anything to do with it.  See:  Baldur's Gate I, that was fairly open-world.

Good point. Like I said, I'm not a gameafacturer. I know crap about the art of creating games. I only know what I likes, and I likes an open world. Come on, BioWare!

I don't think it will be open world. You mean a bunch of scenery then a town type of thing?

but I think there will be more areas on a map to explore type of thing.

Open (and aimless) world like Skyrim et al.? No thank you, leave me out. I cannot stand sandbox games. Travelling on a map of the world, freely? Sure. It could be like DAO, or even NWN2SoZ.

I guess there will be larger open areas but it will probably not be an open world as we know it. We will probably be reunited with the world map from DA:O.

Well just because Skyrim's open world was largely LOOK AT THE PRETTY TREES AND MOUNTAINS doesn't men DA3's open world would have to be. For one, you'd have companions, and not just 1 zombie-eyed companion who was too stupid to open a door. You'd have 3 intelligent partners. That alone would change the dynamic from Skyrim.

Just cuz one game did open world one way doesn't mean all games have to do it that way. I think there's a lot of potential for a Dragon Age open world.

An open-ish world would be sweet. I really want those awesome companions the DA team creates, and I really want that juicy story they are known for, so I would imagine some compromise would be needed in just how open the game could be. But I bet they could manage something akin to Origins where there were sections of large area and then maybe within those different sections more openness. That would be sweet indeed.

Yeh you're right... I guess something would have to give, and if I had to chose between awesome companions with a great story, and an open world environment, I'd pick the former every time.

I mean, bigger hubs are a given. The Denerim in DA:O and of course Kirkwall and DA:II were both equally disappointing to me. For a large capital city like either of those in DA:III, I expect it to be as if it was an open world environment. To be able to travel the city almost like it was a city (not to scale, of course) and to explore its many nooks and crannies.

I dunno, maybe I'm not sure of what I want. Moar immersion, I guess.

There is a big trade off between open world and non open world. The less control over the world and it's actions the more difficult it is to have a tight storyline and meaningful companions.

The problem is, if what Mr. Laidlaw said about the future of DA last year still applies, they plan to country hop, quite a bit, and that doesn't lend itself to a sandbox world design.  If your characters are *supposed to be* traveling for days or weeks to get to their next destination, it doesn't make sense to have a map that only takes an hour or two to cross with no fast travel.  And if they don't want to spend an extra year or two on the game, they probably won't do that.

Every time I play a game like Skyrim or Fallout 3, I do wish I could have companions like a Bioware game.  It gets lonely when you're out there on the road, and the Skyrim hirelings don't really cut it.  The closest I've come is Fallout New Vegas, which was pretty great in that regard, but I realize that that was a special case.  It's a shame, but it seems like you can have expansive, open worlds, or cinematics and character driven stories, but not both.

Makes sense. So no open world then. Ah well.

But BioWare, do a better job of immersing me in DAIII. Big town hubs, for starters!

Definitely this. Kirkwall felt empty for a city which really took away from the immersion for me. Sounds like a great start.
