As far as we know, Sandal doesn't have a mental illness.

I figured his limited capacity for speech and little things might've been attributed to a mental illness of some sort, perhaps caused my exposure to lyrium. Though the game hasn't set anything like that in stone, so you are correct.

I can see it now. Taking a cue from The Joker, a crazed companion getting questioned about why they are the way they are and how they became that way can always change.

It can go from "I watched my family get slaughtered before my very eyes" to "I was born this way" to "I've never been insane. I'm only insane from your perspective. From mine, the entire world is crazy."

Meaning we'd never know the truth. Hell, we could come up with it ourselves.

Where did THAT come into it? You don't have to be traumatized THAT way. Hell, just making someone lose their sanity over seeing their best friend die is acceptable. There are infinite ways to cause a character to "lose it".

Insanity, crazy in the head..edness, losing your mind- so many different things can cause that.

Hell, Bioware could write a F/F character who had a muffin for a best friend as a child and when that muffin was eaten she lost it.
